KTM 690 Adventure: Spy Shots Reveal the Long-Awaited Single-Cylinder Adventure

Spy shots from Austria show a near-production-ready prototype of the KTM 690 Adventure featuring rally styling, a triple-tank setup, and the proven LC4 engine. A reveal at or before EICMA 2026 in Milan is considered likely.
  • New rally-inspired front design with large windscreen and integrated LED headlight
  • Triple-tank setup expected to significantly increase range over the 690 Enduro R
  • Proven 692.7 cc LC4 single-cylinder with 79 hp (57.3 kW) and 73 Nm (53.9 lb.ft)

Ever since the KTM 640 Adventure was discontinued in 2007, fans of a lightweight, off-road-capable adventure enduro have been waiting for a worthy successor from Mattighofen. Fresh spy shots from Austrian roads now suggest that the wait may soon be over. The images show a near-production-ready prototype based on the 690 platform that bears a strong visual resemblance to Dakar rally machines. In enthusiast circles, such a motorcycle has been dubbed the ultimate “unicorn” for years: a bike under 175 kg wet weight, powerful, comfortable enough for long-distance riding, luggage-capable, and seriously off-road competent.

New Rally-Style Front End

The most striking difference from the familiar 690 Enduro R is at the front. The prototype wears an entirely new fairing with a large, transparent windscreen housing an integrated LED headlight. The light unit appears to differ from the headlights KTM uses on other models. Behind the windscreen sits a substantial navigation tower with a horizontally mounted TFT display. Above it, the photos reveal a bracket reminiscent of a roadbook holder. Whether this detail makes it into the production version remains to be seen, though both the 640 Adventure and 620 Adventure once offered such holders as factory options. Apart from larger radiator shrouds, the remaining plastic parts appear identical to the 690 Enduro R. The motorcycle also features pillion footpegs, suggesting that KTM has riders who occasionally carry a passenger in mind alongside the off-road crowd.

The LC4 Single Remains at the Heart

Beneath the new bodywork sits the proven 692.7 cc LC4 single-cylinder engine. Major internal changes to the engine are unlikely, as the powerplant was fundamentally revised just last year as part of a comprehensive platform update. According to KTM, around 50 percent of the components were newly developed or improved, including the introduction of a single oil pump to reduce friction losses and new rubber engine mounts designed to significantly cut vibrations. Power output is therefore expected to remain at the familiar 79 hp (57.3 kW) and 73 Nm (53.9 lb.ft) of torque. This keeps the LC4 among the most powerful production single-cylinder engines on the market, provided Ducati does not upgrade the 698 Mono further.

The LC4’s history stretches back nearly four decades. Its roots can be traced to 1987, when the 350 LC4 prototype carried Joachim Sauer to victory in the European Enduro Championship. That same year, KTM launched the 600 GS LC4. Since then, the engine has evolved into one of the most successful powerplants in international rally racing and formed the foundation of KTM’s Dakar dominance until new displacement regulations forced it out of competition in 2011.

Proven Chassis with Adapted Suspension

For the chassis, the 690 Adventure relies on the steel trellis frame of the 690 platform, which is also used in the Enduro R, SMC-R, and the sister models Husqvarna 701 and GasGas 700. The wheel combination retains the classic 21-inch front and 18-inch rear with spoked rims. At the rear wheel, a rubber damper in the hub helps reduce vibrations and extend drivetrain life.

The suspension appears to use the same 48 mm XPlor forks and WP monoshock found in the Enduro R. Suspension travel is 265 mm at the front and 250 mm at the rear. Given the higher weight from the additional tanks and touring equipment, spring rates are likely somewhat firmer than on the sister models. For riders looking to extract even more from the chassis, WP’s extensive Pro catalog offers closed-cartridge kits for the fork and an upgraded shock.

Triple-Tank Setup for Greater Range

One of the most exciting details in the spy shots is the fuel system. The prototype appears to feature three separate fuel containers: two tank cells above the engine and the familiar 13.5-liter tank in the subframe, which also serves as a structural chassis element. The exact total capacity is not clearly discernible from the photos, but the setup could significantly increase range over the standard 690.

It would not be the first time the Pierer Mobility Group has employed expanded fuel solutions on its large enduros. The LR variant of the Husqvarna 701 Enduro received an additional 12 liters of tank volume, pushing its range beyond 480 kilometers. Some fans may be disappointed that KTM has apparently not opted for the low-mounted saddle tanks used on the larger LC8c models such as the 890 Adventure or the eleven-time Dakar-winning 450 Rally, especially since the aftermarket already offers such systems for the competition-oriented EXC-F range.

Open Question: Adventure or Rally?

What the new model will ultimately be called remains unknown. Following KTM’s established nomenclature, it should be an “Adventure” model, continuing the tradition of the 620 and 640 Adventure. However, this designation could cause confusion with the LC8c twin-powered 790 Adventure and 890 Adventure. An alternative would be the name “690 Rally.” Under KTM’s usual strategy, where an enduro model is followed by a long-distance adventure variant (as with the 390 Adventure R, 640 Adventure R, and 990 Adventure R), the designation “690 Adventure R” also seems plausible.

Possible Market Launch After EICMA 2026

The prototype already looks very close to production in the photos, indicating that development is well advanced. An official unveiling at EICMA in Milan in November 2026 appears realistic. Should KTM actually bring the model to market, it would close a gap in the Austrian manufacturer’s portfolio that has existed for nearly two decades and compete directly with models like the Yamaha Ténéré 700, while bringing a distinct character thanks to the powerful single-cylinder engine and lower weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When will the KTM 690 Adventure be released?

An exact date has not been confirmed yet. The spy shots show a near-production-ready prototype, with an unveiling at EICMA in November 2026 considered likely. A market launch could follow in early 2027.

  • What engine does the KTM 690 Adventure use?

The motorcycle uses the proven 692.7 cc LC4 single-cylinder engine producing 79 hp (57.3 kW) and 73 Nm (53.9 lb.ft) of torque. The engine was extensively revised in 2025 as part of a platform update.

  • How large is the KTM 690 Adventure fuel tank?

The prototype features a triple-tank setup with two additional fuel cells above the engine and the familiar 13.5-liter tank in the subframe. The exact total capacity has not been confirmed but is expected to significantly exceed the 690 Enduro R standard.

  • What sets the KTM 690 Adventure apart from the 690 Enduro R?

The main differences are the rally-inspired front fairing with a large windscreen and navigation tower, significantly increased fuel capacity for greater range, pillion footpegs, and likely firmer suspension rates for loaded touring.
