After a heavy crash, in which, miraculously, no one was seriously injured, the MotoGP race had to be abandoned after eight laps.

Between turn 1 and 3 an overtaking manoeuvre failed. Zarco sat on the left of Morbidelli, but the braking for the next corner carried him outwards and pushed him right in front of Morbidelli. The front and rear wheels of the two MotoGP machines touched and both riders crashed.

Morbidelli’s Petronas Yamaha rolled over in the gravel bed several times. As the track made a right turn shortly afterwards, the machine was thrown over the track again and completely destroyed. Zarcos Ducati rode without a rider through the gravel bed, collided with the Airfences and was thrown back onto the track in a high arc.

When the two motorcycles crossed the track again, Vinales and Rossi were in the area.Both were only just missed.  At first Morbidelli’s bike skidded between the two Yamahas riding on the track, missing Rossi’s bike by just inches. Just the blink of an eye afterwards Zarcos Ducati flew over Vinales head, who instinctively ducked away. Both riders were missed by an extremely narrow margin and can mark this day as another birthday on the calendar.

Zarco and Morbidelli were only slightly injured in the crash. Morbidelli crouched on the ground and received medical treatment. Zarco limped over to him to check on him. But Morbidelli was able to get into the ambulance under his own power and was later seen in the paddock again without serious injuries.

After the restart of the race Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati) was finally able to win. Joan Mir (Suzuki) followed in second place and Jack Miller (Pramac Ducati) in third.
