Marc Marquez Wins Jerez Sprint After Crash in Rain-Soaked Thriller

In a chaotic flag-to-flag sprint with a sudden weather change, a mass crash and an improvised bike swap, Marc Marquez emerged as the surprise winner. Bagnaia and Morbidelli completed the podium, while the championship leaders left empty-handed.

  • Francesco Bagnaia and Franco Morbidelli on the podium
  • Championship leader Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin leave Jerez without points

The sprint race at the Spanish Grand Prix was supposed to be a measuring stick for Aprilia against a recovered Marc Marquez. Instead, it turned into one of the wildest short-distance spectacles the Circuito de Jerez-Ángel Nieto has ever witnessed. Rain, changing conditions, a double-digit crash count and a winner who first hit the tarmac before ending up on top of the podium: the fourth round of the 2026 season has completely shaken up the championship standings.

Pole Position on a Damp Track

Saturday morning in Jerez had already written the script for an unpredictable race day. After a dry Friday in which Alex Marquez topped the practice timesheets, Saturday brought wet and changing conditions. In qualifying, Marc Marquez set a time of 1:48.087 to beat Johann Zarco by 0.140 seconds, securing his first pole position of the 2026 season. It was also his 75th pole in the premier class and his first since the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2025 – ending a 245-day drought without a front-row start. Fabio Di Giannantonio completed the front row ahead of Marco Bezzecchi, Alex Marquez and Pedro Acosta in the second row.

Pecco Bagnaia’s qualifying was also noteworthy – he could only manage tenth on the grid. Jorge Martin qualified seventh but received a three-place grid penalty for Sunday’s Grand Prix after impeding Alex Marquez during Friday practice. Joan Mir was additionally handed a double long-lap penalty for continuing to ride after a crash in FP2 despite being shown the black-and-orange flag.

Dry Start, Threatening Clouds

When the twelve-lap sprint started at 3 PM local time, the track was still dry. Air temperature stood at 26 degrees Celsius, track temperature at 37 degrees Celsius. All 22 riders went out on slicks with a medium front and soft rear tyre combination. However, the sky had already turned ominously dark before the formation lap.

Marc Marquez made excellent use of his pole and won the start ahead of Zarco and Alex Marquez, who immediately moved up to third from the second row. Bezzecchi, who according to live broadcast data suffered a poor start due to a tear-off stuck under his rear tyre, initially dropped to 17th. Early in lap two, Jorge Martin unexpectedly appeared at turn one and had to significantly reduce his pace. As it later emerged, he had a brake problem on his Aprilia: the front brake disc was glowing red – a sight more commonly seen at night races like Qatar than in the midday sun at Jerez. Bezzecchi also failed to make progress, meaning both factory Aprilia riders were effectively out of points contention early on.

Weather Change in Lap Four

Rain began falling in lap four. Track marshals started waving rain flags, and the white flag was displayed to allow riders to swap to their rain-setup bikes. The order at the front began to shift: Di Giannantonio overtook Zarco and moved up to third, while Raul Fernandez on the Trackhouse Aprilia also picked up the pace. Alex Marquez had closed the gap to his brother to within a few tenths.

In lap seven, Alex Marquez took the lead at turn nine. Marc Marquez offered little resistance and appeared to be biding his time as conditions deteriorated. That decision would pay off in unexpected fashion shortly afterwards.

The Crash and the Controversial Pit Entry

In lap eight, Marc Marquez slid out at the final corner, turn 13. The world champion was able to pick his bike up immediately, but he found himself at a point on the track where a direct route to the pits was no longer possible. The official turn-off from the circuit to the pit lane was already behind him. Heading directly across start and finish would have cost him an entire lap.

Instead, Marquez chose an unusual shortcut. He first let the entire field pass until no rider was approaching. Then he crossed the track, rode over a strip of grass, and reached the pit lane that way.

This time advantage at the tyre swap later proved to be the decisive factor in the race win. The choice of manoeuvre, however, is controversial. Several specialist media outlets considered the action borderline because Marquez had already passed the regular pit lane entry and instead crossed track and grass. Whether the FIM stewards will look into the incident afterwards and possibly issue a penalty was not yet clear at the time of the podium ceremony. A subsequent sanction therefore cannot be ruled out.

Mass Crash in Intensifying Rain

While Marquez was completing his bike swap, chaos erupted for much of the field. Toprak Razgatlioglu crashed while attempting to overtake Lorenzo Savadori, taking the Aprilia test rider down with him. Pecco Bagnaia, Diogo Moreira, Alex Rins, Augusto Fernandez and Pedro Acosta also went down. In lap nine, Jack Miller and Alex Marquez – who had been leading up to that point – crashed as well. Di Giannantonio managed to get back to his pit, as did the majority of the remaining riders. One lap later, Bezzecchi also crashed, just as he had been called in by the Aprilia team for a bike swap.

Brad Binder had switched to rain tyres early and briefly led the race before he too crashed at turn two. Joan Mir lost his bike three laps from the end. At that stage, Fermin Aldeguer was the only rider still on slicks and briefly led the field because his team had not called him in.

Marquez vs. Bagnaia Duel in the Final Laps

Bagnaia and Marc Marquez, both on rain tyres following their bike swaps, eventually overtook Aldeguer. Marquez launched his decisive attack on his teammate at turn nine and took the lead. Over the final two laps, he pulled a clear advantage and brought the victory home safely. Bagnaia salvaged second place ahead of Morbidelli, who turned an apparently hopeless race into a podium finish through an early tyre change and by staying with Bagnaia.

Brad Binder was classified fourth after his crash, followed by Di Giannantonio, Raul Fernandez, Fabio Quartararo, Johann Zarco, Luca Marini and Alex Rins. In total, only 17 of the 22 starters saw the chequered flag.

Race Reactions

Marc Marquez said after his victory: “I don’t think I’ve ever won a crazier race. It’s my first win after a crash. I crashed at the ‘best moment’ because I was already thinking about going to the box anyway. But when Alex was leading the race, I made the mistake of following him. After the crash, I waited until everyone had passed. That was my only chance to switch to rain tyres immediately. Then I saw I was third and just pushed. I’m very happy about this victory.”

Bagnaia reflected on his tyre decision: “Honestly, when I saw at the start that rain was approaching, I thought maybe I should take a medium visor, because you never know. When it started raining, it took me a few laps to understand the conditions, and then I decided to come in.”

Morbidelli dedicated his result to everyone going through difficult times in life: “Crazy race. I was behind the whole group and then a lot of wild things happened. I was lucky to go to the box earlier than the others. I followed Pecco and that’s how this incredible result came about.”

Championship Implications

The Jerez sprint has significantly altered the championship picture. Before the weekend, Marc Marquez trailed championship leader Bezzecchi by 36 points and Jorge Martin by 32 points. With both factory Aprilia riders leaving Jerez empty-handed and Alex Marquez also failing to score sprint points due to his crash, the world champion made up valuable ground in one stroke. Bezzecchi remains in the lead, but his advantage is shrinking noticeably ahead of Sunday’s Grand Prix. A potential retrospective penalty for Marquez could, however, change the picture once again.

The race could also leave its mark on the constructors’ championship. Aprilia endured a dismal Saturday with both factory riders failing to finish and only Raul Fernandez scoring points, while Ducati swept the top three positions with Marc Marquez, Bagnaia and Morbidelli.
