- Electronically dimming visor insert with anti-fog function
- Only suitable for Shoei CWR F2 and CWR F2R visors
- Initial market launch planned for Japan only
After many years without any major changes to visor inserts, Shoei has announced a technical advancement. The new insert is called e:DRYLENS and is designed to combine classic anti-fog solutions with electronically controlled tinting. So far, the system has only been presented as a product announcement, not as standard equipment for new helmets.
Combination of anti-fog and electronic sun protection
The e:DRYLENS insert is based on a concept that aims to address two well-known problems at the same time. On the one hand, it is designed to prevent the visor from fogging up, similar to well-known Pinlock systems. On the other hand, Shoei has integrated an electronically dimmable film that serves as sun protection depending on the setting.
A liquid crystal-based, dimmable film developed in collaboration with Dai Nippon Printing is used. According to the manufacturer, the tint can be adjusted in several stages. Control is either manual or automatic, depending on the mode selected.
Electronic control and charging function
As it is an electronic system, the e:DRYLENS insert requires its own power supply. Shoei uses an integrated battery that is charged via a USB C port. According to the manufacturer, a full charge should be sufficient for around 20 hours of operation. The charging time is stated as around three hours.
This information comes directly from the manufacturer and has not yet been independently verified.
Limited compatibility
One important point to note is the limited compatibility of the new insert. The e:DRYLENS only fits Shoei CWR F2 and CWR F2R visors. These, in turn, are only used on certain Shoei helmet models. The insert is not intended for use with other visors or older helmet series.
This means that the product is clearly aimed at a relatively small target group within the Shoei range.
Initial market launch in Japan only
At present, the e:DRYLENS has only been announced for the Japanese market. Shoei has not yet released any information about a possible launch in Europe or other international markets.
Pre-orders in Japan are set to start on January 9, 2026. The price is 27,500 yen, which is equivalent to approximately €162 or $176.50.
Classification
With the e:DRYLENS, Shoei is taking a technically challenging step, adding an electronic component to classic visor inserts. It remains to be seen whether the additional comfort will outweigh the higher price, the need for charging, and the limited compatibility. It is not yet possible to comment on its suitability for everyday use at this stage.
