- EU Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) granted in March 2026
- 1,999 cc flat-eight boxer engine producing 154 hp (113 kW) and 190 Nm
- 8-speed dual-clutch transmission with reverse gear and shaft drive
What long circulated as a rumor in the motorcycle world now has an official basis. The motorcycle brand Souo from Great Wall Motor (GWM) has received European Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) for the LH2000 model. The so-called WVTA was issued by the Luxembourg-based SNCH (Société Nationale de Certification et d’Homologation), the state certification authority of the Grand Duchy. TÜV Rheinland handled the technical testing. This clears the regulatory path for sales throughout the European Union, as WVTA approval issued by one EU member state is valid without further testing in all other member states.

What the EU Approval Means and What Remains Open
The SNCH is not a small niche provider, but an internationally recognized institution founded in 1987, majority-owned by the Luxembourg government and accredited to ISO 17065. Its technical partners include TÜV Rheinland, TÜV SÜD, TÜV Nord, DEKRA and other renowned testing organizations. The fact that GWM handled the approval process through Luxembourg and TÜV Rheinland demonstrates a professional approach in preparing for the European market.
However, type approval is only the regulatory prerequisite for a sales launch. There is currently no concrete date when European customers can actually purchase the motorcycle. GWM has named no dealer partners in Europe nor communicated prices for the European market. No official press release from the manufacturer itself is available. After receiving approval, GWM apparently plans to accelerate its European entry by establishing distribution channels, developing after-sales service networks and creating local brand structures in the region. In parallel, South America and the Middle East are also to be developed as export markets.
An important detail: EU approval was expressly granted for the model “LH2000”. This designation covers the cruiser variants of the S2000 platform, which exist in four equipment levels. Whether the touring variants S2000 ST and S2000 GL already sold in China fall under the same approval or require separate certification is unclear from the available information. Since all models share the same technical foundation with identical engine and transmission, extending the type approval to include the touring variants would seem logical, though this has not been officially confirmed at this time.
Spotted in Germany as Early as 2024
That GWM takes the European market seriously was already suggested at the end of 2024. In November 2024, the editorial team of Motorrad Online first caught a Souo model during test drives in Germany. It was the LH2000 variant in cruiser style, showing clear parallels to the legendary Honda Valkyrie Rune. The sighting raised suspicion that European suppliers were involved in development, specifically Bosch for engine control, fuel injection and driver assistance systems, as well as ZF Sachs for the chassis. Nearly eighteen months have passed since then, and with the EU approval now granted, it appears confirmed that these test drives were no mere exercise, but part of deliberate preparation for the European market.
On the international stage, GWM also positioned itself aggressively. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2026 in Las Vegas, the company presented the Souo S2000 to a North American audience for the first time. A GWM representative confirmed to US magazine The Autopian that the Souo brand plans to expand to Europe and Australia in 2026 and tackle the North American market in 2027. He mentioned a possible US price of around 30,000 US dollars (approximately 27,500 euros).

An Engine Like No Other: 1,999 cc from Eight Cylinders
The technical heart of all Souo models is a liquid-cooled flat-eight boxer engine with 1,999 cc displacement. It is the world’s first production motorcycle with a flat-eight motor. The engine features four overhead camshafts (DOHC), four valves per cylinder, and an almost square bore-to-stroke ratio of 68.0 by 68.8 millimeters. Power output is 154 hp (113 kW) at 6,500 rpm, with maximum torque of 190 Nm at 4,500 rpm. For comparison: the Honda Gold Wing with its six-cylinder boxer produces 126 hp (93 kW) and 170 Nm from 1,833 cc.
The engine is coupled to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) with reverse gear, allowing maneuvering at speeds of up to 3 km/h. With a dry weight ranging from 404 to 461 kilograms (891 to 1,016 lbs) depending on the variant, this capability is definitely needed. Power is transmitted to the rear wheel via shaft drive. Souo claims a top speed of 210 km/h and a standard consumption of 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers. At 120 km/h, the eight-cylinder should run at only 2,100 rpm.
All technical data comes from Chinese approval documents and the manufacturer itself. The motorcycle is already being sold and delivered in China with these specifications. For the European market, adjustments to local regulations are conceivable, such as emissions standards, noise emissions, or individual equipment details. GWM has not yet published final specifications for Europe.
Chassis, Brakes, and Technology at a High Level
The chassis of the Souo models is conceptually oriented toward the Honda Gold Wing but goes its own way. The front wheel is not guided by a conventional telescopic fork, but by a double-wishbone suspension using the Hossack principle. For the cruiser variants (LH2000), the front fairing was redesigned to visually resemble a classic telescopic fork, even though the Hossack construction is retained underneath. The rear is supported by a single shock absorber. The damping is electronically adjustable and offers semi-active adaptation with three riding modes—”Travel”, “Dynamic”, and “Rain”—including automatic load-compensation.
For braking, Souo uses Brembo: front features two radially mounted four-piston calipers on 320-millimeter discs, rear has a four-piston caliper on a 295-millimeter disc. The ABS comes from Bosch. An electric parking brake is also part of the equipment. The aluminum frame is welded and according to GWM requires no bolted connections whatsoever. The wheels measure 18 inches front and 16 inches rear, the wheelbase is 1,810 millimeters across all models, and seat height is relatively low at 740 millimeters.

Digital Cockpit and Comfort Features from the Automotive World
The cockpit is dominated by a 12.3-inch touchscreen powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor from the automotive sector and supporting OTA updates (Over-the-Air). Added features include voice control, Bluetooth connectivity and an eight-speaker sound system. The system is operated via a rotary knob and buttons on a control panel behind the handlebars or by voice command. The cruiser variants without large fairings feature a more compact round instrument instead of the large TFT display.
Comfort equipment includes heated grips, heated seats for both driver and passenger, an electrically adjustable windscreen, cruise control, tire pressure monitoring, automatic headlight, blind-spot warning, rearview warning system, rear parking sensors, and keyless ignition. Higher equipment levels of the touring variants add a lane-keeping assistant and blind-spot monitoring. Which of these features will be standard or optional in the European models is not yet known.
The Model Range: From Solo Cruiser to Full Dresser
Souo has expanded its eight-cylinder platform into an entire model family. The touring variants S2000 ST (two cases, no top case) and S2000 GL (three cases, passenger seat with backrest and armrests) were launched in October 2024 in China and are clearly positioned against the Honda Gold Wing. The limited Founder Edition (88 units, matte black styling with 24-karat gold accents, signed by GWM CEO Wei Jianjun) began delivery in March 2025.
The cruiser variants under the designation LH2000 or S2000 CT and CL expanded the lineup since fall 2025 with four versions: the LH2000-3 is a minimalist solo cruiser at 404 kilograms (891 lbs), the LH2000-4 adds a passenger seat, the LH2000-5 is a bagger with cases but no windscreen, and the LH2000-6 is the fully equipped bagger with cases and windscreen at 427 kilograms (941 lbs). The design of the cruiser models evokes Honda’s short-lived Valkyrie Rune from the early 2000s.
In China, the touring models start at 218,800 Yuan (approximately 28,000 euros / 30,700 US dollars) for the S2000 ST and 238,800 Yuan (approximately 31,000 euros / 33,800 US dollars) for the S2000 GL. The cruiser variant S2000 CL starts at 189,800 Yuan (approximately 23,000 euros / 25,200 US dollars). European prices are not yet fixed and will likely be influenced by import tariffs, homologation costs, and the establishment of a service network.

Who Is Behind Souo?
Souo (Chinese: 灵魂 / Línghún, translated “Soul”) is the motorcycle brand of Great Wall Motor, one of China’s largest automotive manufacturers. GWM sold approximately 1.4 million vehicles in 2023 and operates the car brands Haval, Tank, Ora, and Wey. The company has been in the automotive business since 1984 and exports to over 170 countries with more than 1,000 distribution points worldwide. In Europe, GWM is already represented with the electric car brand Ora, and the company also manufactures the electric Mini Cooper for BMW through a joint venture.
To enter the motorcycle business, GWM established a dedicated motorcycle factory in Baoding in Hebei Province and brought international expertise in-house. Chief developer of the Souo motorcycles is German Uwe Moser from Baden-Württemberg, who has worked for GWM in China since 2020 and previously held positions at Mercedes-Benz, AMG, Irmscher, Continental and Ricardo. The project is considered a personal prestige endeavor of GWM board chairman Wei Jianjun, a self-proclaimed motorcycle enthusiast.
The first production series of the Souo S2000 comprised 288 units and was sold out within 15 minutes according to GWM. Regular deliveries began on December 28, 2024, with a flagship store opening simultaneously in Beijing. In China, distribution occurs through the dealer network of GWM’s Tank brand.
What Comes Next
EU type approval is a crucial step, but only the first one. GWM must establish a dealer and service network in Europe, ensure spare parts supply, and build trust with a customer base accustomed to brands like Honda, BMW, and Harley-Davidson in the luxury tourer and cruiser segment. Skepticism about Chinese motorcycles remains widespread, though this has also been due to previously available products, which were mostly positioned in the small and mid-capacity segments.
Whether the Souo S2000 with its eight-cylinder boxer is truly perceived as serious competition to the Honda Gold Wing depends significantly on how GWM addresses reliability, service network, and residual value. The technical data on paper are impressive, the equipment is comprehensive, and the price in China is considerably below that of the Gold Wing. But without local dealers and workshops that can help in case of problems, European customers will be hard to convince.
What is clear: with EU approval, Souo has achieved the regulatory milestone where many ambitious Chinese projects have failed in the past. Now GWM must prove that this approval is not the end of the line.
