Innovative gearbox technology for Moto2
Probably the most significant advance concerns the gearbox. For the first time, a new shift pattern arrangement is used in which the neutral gear is now above the highest gear and is mechanically locked. This prevents unintentional shifting into neutral during racing.
The revised shift mechanism includes a new shift drum with modified guide tracks that enable improved gear shifting precision. High-precision, CNC-machined components ensure optimized inertia and more efficient power transmission. Thanks to the mechanical neutral lock mechanism, riders can shift directly between first and sixth gear – a first in Moto2.
Specially developed crankcase
Another technical highlight is the new crankcase, which has been specially designed for the 2025 Moto2 engine. This design enables the integration of the new gearbox and ensures even greater resilience under racing conditions. The idle can now only be activated manually and is only used in the pit lane and at the start.
Reactions from the paddock
Carlos Ezpeleta, Chief Sporting Officer of Dorna Sports, expressed his enthusiasm for the latest innovations: “Triumph has been setting new records ever since it entered Moto2. The fact that they continue to strive for innovation shows their commitment to racing. The new gearbox update underlines their dedication and the added value that MotoGP offers as a development platform for high-tech components. We are sure that the riders will love this update, which will be reflected in even more exciting races.”
Long-term cooperation secured
After Triumph celebrated great success with its engine technology in the Moto2 class, the collaboration with Dorna was recently extended until the end of 2029. The new engines will already be seen racing for the second time this weekend at the Argentinian GP in Moto2.
With this technical evolution, Triumph is sending a strong signal for the future of Moto2 and underpinning its role as a leading player in the middle Grand Prix category.
