Recall Harley-Davidson 2023 Street Glide CVO: Loss of control at high speed

Harley-Davidson recently announced a recall for the 2023 Street Glide CVO (FLHXSE) model in the United States.  This step was taken after it was discovered that the motorcycle could be difficult to control at speeds above 100 mph (160 km/h).  The cause of the problem lies in the settings of the engine management system, which can lead to an unexpectedly strong reaction due to its oversensitivity.

Scope of the recall

A total of 1,464 units of the Street Glide CVO are affected by this recall, which corresponds to 100% of the production of this model in model year 2023.  These motorcycles were manufactured between May 10 and October 6, 2023.  Bikes produced after October 6 are not affected by this issue as they have already received an updated calibration.

Solution and measures

Harley-Davidson plans to resolve the issue by recalibrating the engine control unit.  In addition, a ballast and a belt will be fitted to stabilize the front of the motorcycle.  These measures should help to improve control of the motorcycle at high speeds.

Communication with owners

Harley-Davidson dealers will be notified of the recall between December 14 and 21, 2023.  Owners of affected motorcycles will be notified in writing between December 22 and 29, 2023.  It is recommended that owners of affected motorcycles contact their local Harley-Davidson dealer to make an appointment for the necessary adjustments.  This measure will of course be carried out free of charge.

Contact options for owners

For more information, owners can contact Harley-Davidson Customer Service at 1-800-258-2464 and refer to the callback number 0185.  Alternatively, they can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.  The NHTSA campaign number for this recall is 23V-836.

Global recall?

Because motorcycles are often produced in one plant for sale worldwide, there is a possibility that motorcycles in other markets could be affected by this problem.
