As usual, the post-season test following the MotoGP season finale in Valencia featured a number of technical innovations, but Aprilia stood out in particular this time around. The manufacturer used the one-day test to try out an unusual and massive-looking rear wing, which is visually reminiscent of Formula 1 solutions. The concept attracted a lot of interest in the paddock and raises questions about possible application scenarios.
New rear concept sparks discussion
In recent years, MotoGP has been characterized by the continuous development of aerodynamic aids. While front wings and winglets have long been standard and have even found their way into the series market in some cases, the solution now being presented affects the rear of the motorcycle. The voluminous wing clearly differs from the familiar so-called stegosaurus rear wings, which have already been lost in racing without a rider having to end their race.
It remains to be seen whether the new component could result in a different rule assessment or safety requirement. Should Aprilia continue to pursue the system towards the 2026 season, it remains unclear whether a damaged wing would lead to an immediate race stoppage or whether it would be possible to continue riding.
Possible development goals
Aprilia is said to want to use the new rear wing to improve driving stability in various driving situations. The component could generate additional downforce in corners, while also having a stabilizing effect when braking. At the same time, the element shown differs significantly from a similar solution that was already seen before last season. The version now presented appears much more massive and extensive.
During the test, Aprilia gradually reduced the size of the component. The striking, large end plates were first removed, then the entire wing disappeared. In addition, another variant was used, which was significantly more compact and was fixed on both sides of the rear fairing.
Outlook for future developments
It remains to be seen whether and in what form the wing will be further developed. The RS GP enjoyed the manufacturer’s most successful season to date in MotoGP competition in 2025, which is why new aero concepts may be seen as the next step. The components tested in Valencia could provide clues as to the direction the project will take in the future.
