CFMoto has not been in the cruiser segment for very long. The 450CL-C and 450CL-C Bobber only arrived on the market in 2024. Yet the manufacturer from Hangzhou is evidently already working on the next generation. Details of the CFMoto 550CL-C have now emerged from Chinese type approval documents, revealing a significantly more advanced motorcycle.
More displacement, more power: The new 526 cc twin
At the heart of the 550CL-C is a 526 cc parallel twin based on the familiar 449 cc engine from the 450CL-C. The bore grows from 72 to 74 millimetres, which is also reflected in the internal engine code: the designation 274MR-A stands for two cylinders and 74 millimetres bore. The stroke increases significantly from 55.2 to 61.2 millimetres, requiring a new crankshaft assembly and new pistons. The longer stroke suggests a configuration focused on low-end torque, as is typical for a cruiser.
Peak output according to the type approval documents is 39 kW (53 hp). That represents an increase of around 30 percent over the 30 kW (41 hp) of the 450CL-C, significantly exceeding the pure displacement increase of 17 percent. The engine is therefore likely tuned to a generally higher state of performance. Torque is expected to rise from the current 42 Nm to an estimated 50 Nm, which would correspond more closely to the proportional displacement increase. The document states a top speed of 165 km/h, twelve km/h more than the 450 version at 153 km/h.
Six-speed gearbox and automated alternative
The depicted model of the 550CL-C is equipped with a conventional six-speed gearbox. However, CFMoto already offers the 450CL-C in China with an automated manual transmission that provides both a fully automatic mode and manual shifting at the push of a button. It is considered likely that this option will also be available for the 550CL-C.
Chassis: Aluminium swingarm and longer wheelbase
CFMoto has also made changes to the chassis. The most notable modification concerns the swingarm, which on the 550CL-C is made from aluminium rather than steel and is also longer. The wheelbase increases from 1,485 to 1,520 millimetres as a result. The overall weight rises from 181 to 195 kilograms.
Despite the longer wheelbase, the overall length of the motorcycle remains virtually unchanged. At 2,212 millimetres, the 550CL-C is just seven millimetres longer than the 450CL-C at 2,205 millimetres. This is due to a shorter tail section that visually compensates for the additional swingarm length. The wheels, tyres and upside-down fork have been carried over from the 450CL-C.
Comprehensive styling redesign
Visually, the 550CL-C differs significantly from its predecessor. A new headlight, a redesigned tank with side knee pads, a new seat and the aforementioned shorter tail section change the overall appearance considerably. Only the front mudguard and the round TFT display have been retained from the outgoing model.
Market launch expected in 2027
The fact that the 550CL-C has appeared in Chinese type approval documents suggests that the official unveiling is not far away. As an established part of the CFMoto model range, the new cruiser is expected to be available from 2027.
