- 398 vehicles of model year 2025 affected, which corresponds to 100 percent of the US population
- Official NHTSA recall number 26V220, filed on April 7, 2026
- Cause is a data input error in the finite element analysis, corrected with a reinforcement kit
Bombardier Recreational Products, BRP for short, has launched an official safety recall for the electric motorcycle Can-Am Origin. The reason is a possible fatigue weakness in the mounting of the front brake caliper, which can lead to fracture after several hard braking or emergency braking maneuvers. If the component fails, the front brake no longer works as intended, which according to the manufacturer significantly increases the risk of an accident with possible injuries or fatal consequences. The recall was registered with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA under number 26V220 and filed on April 7, 2026.

Scope of the recall and affected vehicles
In the United States, 398 vehicles are affected by the recall. According to BRP, this figure corresponds to the entire population of the model delivered there, meaning the rate of units with a potential defect stands at 100 percent. The affected machines were produced between May 2, 2024 and June 17, 2025. For the US market, only model year 2025 is affected, as model year 2026 units were not yet in customer hands at the time of the recall. In other countries, the recall is partly more extensive, where model year 2026 vehicles may also be affected, and the production periods differ. BRP also states that vehicles not covered by the official recall will be retrofitted at the manufacturer’s own plants.
Technical cause and background
BRP’s investigation identified an error in the data input for the finite element analysis, or FEA for short. This software is used in vehicle development to virtually load components and simulate their behavior under stress. Due to the faulty data input, the brake caliper mounting was not designed for the forces actually occurring. As a result, the component can fail earlier than planned due to material fatigue during repeated hard braking or emergency braking.
The affected components are the part designated Knuckle LH Molded with part number 706204426. The component is supplied by the Taiwanese Tier 1 supplier KYB Manufacturing Taiwan Co., Ltd.
BRP points out that the risk of failure increases when road tires are fitted. From the factory, the Can-Am Origin is equipped with dual-sport tires. Riders who instead fit pure road tires promote stronger braking forces due to the higher grip on asphalt, which accelerates the fatigue process.

Chronology of the discovery
The two documented incidents were not identified in road traffic, but during ABS calibration tests at a supplier. A Can-Am Origin of model year 2027 equipped with particularly grippy tires was tested. On January 19 and January 29, 2026, the front brake caliper mounting failed in each case. No accidents or injuries were reported in connection with these test events.
Following the reports, BRP initiated its own investigation. Throughout the entire development phase of model years 2025 and 2026, neither laboratory tests nor physical tests had shown any anomalies, and no corresponding damage reports had come in from the field either. Only the analysis of the new incidents led to the identification of the error in the input data of the finite element analysis. On March 31, 2026, BRP decided on the basis of the collected information that there was sufficient evidence for a safety-relevant recall action. At the time of this decision, no further reports on the issue had been received.
Course of the repair and production halt
As a corrective measure, BRP provides for the installation of a so-called Caliper Support Reinforcement Kit, i.e. a reinforcement kit for the brake caliper mounting. The installation is carried out by the BRP dealer network and is free of charge for customers. The same kit is also installed on the Origin motorcycles still in BRP’s stock and in ongoing production as soon as the corresponding parts are available.
Until then, production of the Can-Am Origin has been suspended. Production is only to resume once the required parts are available. BRP does not give a precise date for the availability of the repair kits at this time; dealers and later customers will be informed accordingly.
In addition, owners of affected vehicles receive a clear advisory: In the official notice, BRP advises not to ride the motorcycle and to park it outdoors until the repair has been carried out. The warning is labeled “Do Not Drive – Park Outside” in the NHTSA report.

Timeline and notification of owners
The recall follows a staged plan. BRP informed its dealers about the action on April 14, 2026. The first notification of registered owners in the US is scheduled for May 14, 2026. Initially, this is a notice about the existing recall topic. A second letter is to follow as soon as the required spare parts are available and the actual repair can be coordinated. In addition, BRP sends the information by email, provided a corresponding address is on file.
Since April 21, 2026, owners have been able to check their vehicle identification number in the NHTSA database for an existing recall. For inquiries, BRP customer service is available at 1-888-272-9222. Alternatively, the NHTSA safety hotline accepts reports and questions at 1-888-327-4236, and information can also be accessed via the website nhtsa.gov.
The Can-Am Origin model
The Can-Am Origin is the first all-electric motorcycle of the brand, with which BRP has returned to the two-wheeler segment after a decades-long pause. The brake system comes from the Spanish manufacturer J.Juan. At the front, a single 320-millimeter disc works in combination with a two-piston caliper, while at the rear a 240-millimeter disc with a single-piston caliper is used. It is precisely the mounting of this front brake caliper that is now at the center of the recall.
