Hero MotoCorp Eyes European Expansion: Affordable Models and a Dakar-Inspired Offroader

Indian manufacturer Hero MotoCorp is systematically expanding its business in Europe. After launching in Italy and Spain, the company is now present in the United Kingdom with two models. The machines are not yet available in Germany, but the group is preparing that step and has announced further model lines, including an offroad derivative inspired by its Dakar rally campaign.
  • Hero has already launched in Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, each time through local distribution partners.
  • The company says it sells around 6.5 million motorcycles per year and is active in 52 countries.
  • The models are not yet available in Germany, but the group already operates a development centre in Munich.

Hero MotoCorp is one of the largest two-wheeler manufacturers in the world, yet until recently the brand had almost no presence in Western Europe. That is changing fast. Within just a few months the company has set up distribution structures in several European countries and brought its first combustion-engine models to market. CEO Harshavardhan Chitale explained the strategy behind the push and gave an outlook on the models due to follow in the coming years. The move is part of a broader trend in which Indian brands are increasingly targeting the European market.

Who Is Hero MotoCorp?

Hero MotoCorp claims to be the world’s largest motorcycle and scooter manufacturer by volume, a position the company says it has held for 25 consecutive years. It sells around 6.5 million machines per year, and since its founding in 1984 more than 125 million vehicles have rolled off its production lines. The company grew out of the former joint venture Hero Honda Motors, which was operated together with the Japanese brand. In 2011 the two parties split, and since then the firm has traded as Hero MotoCorp, building its own product range along with in-house research and development.

Today the manufacturer says it operates eight factories — six in India plus one each in Colombia and Bangladesh — and reports annual revenue of around 4.3 billion euros (approximately 5 billion US dollars). Beyond its conventional combustion-engine business, Hero is active in electric mobility through the VIDA brand and holds stakes in EV specialists Ather Energy and Euler Motors. There are also strategic alliances with Harley-Davidson, with whom Hero co-developed the X440 cruiser platform, and with Zero Motorcycles in the electric motorcycle segment.

Chitale spoke openly about the reasons for the expansion. After building out the product portfolio, the next step was to develop models that suit individual markets rather than simply exporting from a single base. The key, he said, is to look at what customers in each market actually need.

Where Is Hero Available in Europe?

In Europe Hero is currently present in Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, with the market entries happening in that order. Italy came first in October 2025, where distribution is handled by Pelpi International, which says it oversees more than 160 dealers. Hero started there with 36 retail partners and plans to grow the network to 54 locations. Sales in Spain began almost simultaneously through Grupo Onex.

The United Kingdom followed in spring 2026, with distribution managed by MotoGB, a Lancashire-based family business that has been in the market for more than 40 years and claims to operate the country’s largest dealer network. Since taking on the Hero partnership in 2025, the network has grown to 36 sales and service outlets. Pricing varies by country. In Spain the Xpulse 200 4V starts at 2,592 euros (around 3,020 US dollars), the Pro version at 2,792 euros (around 3,250 US dollars). In Italy the Hunk 440 is listed from 3,990 euros (around 4,650 US dollars); in the UK it costs 3,499 pounds (approximately 4,040 euros / 4,710 US dollars). Warranty terms also differ — in Italy and Spain the manufacturer offers up to five years, in the UK two years.

Chitale explained the rationale behind the UK launch: “Now we sell in 52 countries and of course, we had to come to UK. It’s the most mature and most discerning audience. A lot of two-wheeler technology has grown out of here. So hence we needed to be doubly, triply sure of what we are bringing here.”

Where Else Is Hero Heading in Europe?

Hero models are not yet available through regular retail channels in Germany. However, the group is preparing the German market and counts it among the countries where distribution structures comparable to those in Italy, Spain and the UK are to be established. France is also in that group.

A connection to Germany already exists on the development side. Hero operates a research and development centre in Munich, where the team studies how models are received in European markets in order to tailor future model lines accordingly. Several of the current combustion-engine models were developed at the company’s centres in India and Germany, according to Hero. At the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan in late 2025, the brand also appeared with a substantial line-up, meaning the models are likely already familiar to a European audience before any sales launch date has been confirmed.

What Does the Xpulse 200 Offer?

The Xpulse 200 is a lightweight adventure-enduro model offered in two variants and suitable for the A2 licence category. It is powered by a 199.6 cc oil-cooled single-cylinder engine with four valves, producing 18.9 hp (14 kW) and a peak torque of 17.35 Nm (12.8 lb-ft) at 6,500 rpm, paired with a five-speed gearbox. According to the manufacturer, the engine is tuned for the low and mid-range, which is intended to suit both city traffic and touring.

Standard equipment on both models includes three ABS modes for road, off-road and rally use, an LCD display with Bluetooth connectivity, gear indicator and turn-by-turn navigation prompts, as well as a full LED lighting system that the manufacturer claims delivers 230 percent more luminous output than conventional halogen technology. A sump guard, hand protectors and a luggage plate with integrated tie-down hooks are also included.

The base version has a seat height of 825 mm, 220 mm of ground clearance and 190 mm of suspension travel at the 37 mm telescopic fork. The rear monoshock is adjustable for preload. Kerb weight is 159 kg (350 lbs).

Xpulse 200 Pro

The more off-road-focused Pro variant offers a fully adjustable suspension with 250 mm of travel at the front and 220 mm at the rear, ground clearance raised to 270 mm and a higher seat position of 891 mm. Bar risers for standing riding and an extended shift lever for use with off-road boots round out the package. Kerb weight is 161 kg (355 lbs).

What Sets the Hunk 440 Apart?

The Hunk 440 is a mid-range naked bike competing in the A2 segment. It is powered by a long-stroke 440 cc single-cylinder engine with two valves and air-plus-oil cooling, producing 27 hp (20 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 36 Nm (26.5 lb-ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm. The engine meets Euro 5+. Its technical basis is the platform co-developed with Harley-Davidson, which also underpins the X440 sold under that brand.

The chassis features a 43 mm upside-down fork supplied by KYB and twin rear shocks with adjustable preload. Braking hardware comes from ByBre, with a 320 mm front disc and a 240 mm rear disc. Dual-channel ABS is standard.

What New Models Is Hero Planning?

According to Chitale, the models launched so far are just the beginning of a whole series of introductions. The plan is to bring the entire Xpulse family to Europe step by step, including a version inspired by the Dakar rally. This was shown at EICMA in late 2025 as the Xpulse 210 Dakar Edition, equipped with a liquid-cooled 210 cc engine with overhead camshafts, around 25 hp (18 kW), a six-speed gearbox and a fully adjustable rally suspension with 280 mm of travel. The brand underlined its off-road credentials with a podium finish at the 2024 Dakar Rally. Also on display in Milan was the Hunk 440 SX, a scrambler featuring ride-by-wire technology, multiple riding modes, and switchable ABS and traction control.

Beyond that, the CEO flagged a more affordable commuter model with a smaller displacement as well as maxi-scooters. “So stay tuned. Every few quarters, you should see a launch and introduction coming from Hero,” he said.

How Does Hero Stack Up Against the Competition?

Compared with other Indian manufacturers such as Royal Enfield and the Mahindra-backed BSA, Hero sees itself as well positioned. While it is a relatively new market entrant, it is significantly larger in many shared markets and offers a broader range, Chitale argued. As a selling point for growth he cited the fuel-consumption figures of the models — every motorcycle is the most efficient in its class, which gains importance as sensitivity to fuel prices increases. Fuel efficiency and reliability, he said, are the two cornerstones of the brand. With this push, Hero joins a growing number of Indian manufacturers targeting the affordable entry-level segment in Europe.
