Honda has inaugurated a new motorcycle factory in Aliağa near Izmir. The plant has been operational since April 2026 and could play a key role in Honda’s European production strategy long-term.
  • Honda now operates 38 motorcycle factories worldwide
  • Initial capacity of 100,000 motorcycles per year, with plans to expand to 200,000
  • Investment: approximately 20 million USD (around 19 million euros / 20 million USD)

The world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer has opened a new production facility. Honda officially inaugurated its new motorcycle factory in Aliağa, Izmir Province, Turkey. The plant is Honda’s 38th motorcycle factory worldwide and is operated by Honda Türkiye A.S., a wholly owned subsidiary of Honda Motor Europe Ltd. Production had already started in April 2026.

How Large Is the New Honda Factory in Aliağa?

The plant covers a total area of 100,000 square meters, including 45,000 square meters of covered production space. Honda designed the facility according to its own global manufacturing standards, with a particular focus on quality, efficiency, and flexibility. The total investment for the plant, including machinery and equipment, amounts to approximately 20 million USD (around 19 million euros / 20 million USD), according to Honda. Converted to Turkish lira, this equals roughly 760 million TL, or approximately 2.94 billion JPY.

The initial annual capacity is 100,000 motorcycles. Honda plans to double this to up to 200,000 units if market demand warrants the expansion. The new factory is expected to create around 300 direct jobs.

Which Models Are Produced in Turkey?

Honda has not officially confirmed the full model lineup for the plant. However, images from the opening ceremony show the Honda PCX, a scooter popular in Turkey and many other markets. A focus on commuter and delivery models seems likely, as this segment has been the primary driver of market growth in Turkey in recent years.

Why Is Honda Building a Motorcycle Factory in Turkey?

Turkey has emerged as one of Honda’s most important growth markets in recent years. In 2025, Honda was the best-selling motorcycle brand in the country for the eleventh consecutive year. As early as 2024, Honda Türkiye set a new sales record with 162,000 motorcycles sold in a single year.

According to Honda, the key driver of this growth was increased demand for personal mobility and motorcycles for commercial purposes such as delivery services. The COVID-19 pandemic had further accelerated this trend. With its own production facility, Honda aims to strengthen local supply chains, reduce dependence on imports, and respond more quickly to regional market demand.

What Does the Factory Mean for Honda’s Global Strategy?

According to Honda, the company has produced over 20 million motorcycles and scooters annually worldwide since 2018. Even at full capacity, the Turkish plant’s 200,000 units would represent only about 0.5 to 1 percent of Honda’s total global motorcycle production. Honda currently holds an estimated 40 percent share of the global motorcycle market. The company’s stated goal is to increase this share to 50 percent by 2030.

Hans de Jaeger, President and Director of Honda Motor Europe, put the factory opening into perspective: “The start of production at the Honda Türkiye motorcycle factory is a strong expression of our confidence in the market, the importance of it to our global business, and our commitment to long-term cooperation and prosperity.” De Jaeger emphasized that the factory is intended to contribute to Honda’s global production network as well as to Turkey’s industrial development, employment, and sustainability goals.

Satoru Yamada, President of Honda Türkiye A.S., added: “This production plant, which we have established in İzmir, Aliağa, is a clear expression of Honda’s strong belief in Turkey, its long-term vision, and the close, trusted relationship we have built here over many years. For us, the true measure of success is not only economic figures. It is about creating an impact that touches society and adds value to people’s lives.”

Sustainability and Social Engagement

According to Honda, the plant was developed in line with the company’s global environmental vision. However, the company did not provide specific technical details about its sustainability measures. Additionally, Honda Türkiye says it continues to pursue social projects, including traffic safety education programs and reforestation projects for areas affected by wildfires.

Honda Türkiye: Company Profile

Honda Türkiye A.S. was founded in February 1992 and is headquartered in Maltepe, Istanbul. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Honda Motor Europe Ltd. with a registered capital of 180 million Turkish lira. As of July 2025, Honda Türkiye employed approximately 160 people. Its business activities include the import and distribution of motorcycles, automobiles, and spare parts. With the new factory in Aliağa, Honda is adding in-house motorcycle production in Turkey for the first time.

The factory’s opening ceremony was attended by representatives of Honda Motor Europe, the Honda Türkiye management team, public institutions, local authorities, and business partners.
