MotoGP Calendar 2027: Two New Circuits, Three Dates Still Subject to Confirmation

MotoGP Group adopted the 2027 race calendar together with the world governing body FIM and published it on 25 September 2026. As laid down in the regulations, there are once again 22 events on the schedule, spread across five continents. There are no major surprises, as most of the changes had already been hinted at in the preceding weeks. Even so, quite a lot is shifting: two circuits are added, two drop out, and many races move one or more weekends later or earlier. On top of that, 2027 is the first season under the new technical regulations. The calendar therefore sets the framework for the biggest upheaval in the premier class in many years.

When does the 2027 MotoGP season start and when does it end?

The 2027 season begins on the weekend of 5 to 7 March with the Thai Grand Prix at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram. As usual, the finale takes place from 26 to 28 November at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia.

Buriram therefore hosts the season opener once again. The start is one week later than in 2026. Around a month before the first race, the final winter tests will also be held in Buriram. Even before the opener there is a dedicated date in South America: the official season launch takes place on Botafogo beach in Rio de Janeiro, roughly two weeks before the first race.

The finale also moves back. It is one week later than the season finale originally planned for 2026. However, the late-November date brings a weather risk, both for the race weekend itself and for the traditional test that follows in the week after, in early December.

Which circuits are new on the 2027 MotoGP calendar?

Two circuits are new on the calendar in 2027: the Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez in Buenos Aires and the Adelaide Street Circuit in Australia. Both replace venues that had previously been fixtures on the calendar.

Buenos Aires: return to Argentina

Argentina returns after a one-year break, but no longer to Termas de Río Hondo. That circuit has not been on the calendar since the end of the 2025 season. Instead, MotoGP will race at the modernised Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez in the capital Buenos Aires. The last motorcycle Grand Prix held there was in 1999. The race from 9 to 11 April is round four of the season and follows directly after the Brazilian Grand Prix, which will be held in Goiânia for the second time. According to MotoGP, the aim is to further strengthen its position in South America.

Adelaide: first race in the heart of a city centre

The second new addition is the street circuit in Adelaide. It takes over the Australian Grand Prix from the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit and is the first purpose-designed MotoGP circuit in the middle of a city centre. The semi-permanent track runs through the city’s parklands, is 4.13 kilometres long and has 15 corners. The race from 12 to 14 November is the penultimate round of the year. There is a free weekend before and after it, with two weeks to go until the finale in Valencia.

The series sees Adelaide as a kind of pilot project in a major city. Liberty Media, the new owner of MotoGP, hopes to use this model to attract other cities around the world to the series. For the riders, the late date adds an extra unknown: a new circuit shortly before the end of the season can well influence the title decision in the first year of the 850cc bikes. As for the weather, conditions in Adelaide during the Australian spring are expected to be milder than on Phillip Island, which is known for its unpredictable weather.

The project is not without controversy. In South Australia, residents have voiced criticism and scepticism for months, and most recently legal challenges to the construction work were added. Nevertheless, Adelaide has kept its place on the official calendar.

Which races drop off the 2027 MotoGP calendar?

Balaton Park in Hungary and Phillip Island in Australia are no longer on the calendar in 2027. Termas de Río Hondo does not return either, because the Argentine GP moves to Buenos Aires.

The Hungarian Grand Prix disappears after only two editions at Balaton Park. Mathematically, Buenos Aires takes its place. The cancellation has a second consequence: it ensures that MotorLand Aragón stays on the calendar in 2027. From 2028, the Spanish circuit is then to serve only as a reserve venue. Phillip Island loses the Australian GP to Adelaide, a switch that was already known before the calendar was published.

Which 2027 MotoGP dates are still subject to confirmation?

Three races are not yet fully confirmed. Buenos Aires and Adelaide still require homologation by the FIM, meaning the official approval of the circuit. For the Grand Prix of the Americas in Austin, the contract is still missing.

For the two new circuits, it is therefore a matter of technical approval by the world governing body. In Austin’s case, by contrast, it is about the contractual side: the race is listed as “subject to contract”.

What about the Qatar Grand Prix?

Formally, Qatar is on the calendar without any caveat as round two from 12 to 14 March. But this date is not entirely certain either. The Qatar GP of the current 2026 season was originally scheduled for April and was postponed because of the Iran war; it is currently planned for November. Whether that race takes place is to be clarified in the coming weeks.

There is also talk in the paddock that Qatar could swap places in 2027 with the Indonesian Grand Prix in October if the situation in the Middle East remains difficult. This has not been officially confirmed. Should the race in Qatar be cancelled altogether, there would be a break of around a month after the opener in Thailand until the race in Brazil.

How is the 2027 MotoGP season structured?

The season is divided into three main sections: five overseas races in spring, a long European block from May to early October, and a final phase in Asia and Australia with the finale in Valencia. On top of that come five double-headers and one triple-header, meaning two or three races on consecutive weekends.

Overseas start with two double-headers

Thailand and Qatar form the first double-header of the season. This is followed by a week off before heading to South America. Brazil and Argentina form the second double-header. After a free weekend, Austin is on the calendar, three weeks later than usual.

Twelve races in the European block

Between early May and early October, twelve races take place in Europe. The opener in Jerez on 9 May is one week later than usual. Jerez and Le Mans effectively swap dates, with France moving back a week. In 2027, Barcelona follows Mugello; in the 2026 season the order was reversed.

Unlike in 2026, the Sachsenring is no longer the last race before the summer break. That role goes to Brno, which moves back a month into July. There are four weeks between Brno and Silverstone. Silverstone itself takes place a week later than usual. Austria returns to August after its September date in 2026. The organisers in Spielberg hope this will bring more spectators again. Misano and Aragón form another double-header in September. Portimão, still the penultimate stop of the season in 2026, moves forward to early October and closes the European block.

Asia, Australia and the finale

The autumn overseas races start two weeks later than in 2026. Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia form the only triple-header of the year. Sepang moves into the slot between Motegi and Mandalika; previously, Japan and Indonesia followed each other directly. Due to the later date in October, cooler track conditions can be expected at Motegi. Adelaide and Valencia follow, each with a free weekend in between.

When does MotoGP race at the Sachsenring in 2027?

The German Grand Prix takes place at the Sachsenring from 9 to 11 July 2027. It is round eleven of the season.

A week later, the series continues in Brno from 16 to 18 July. For fans from Germany, this means two races in Central Europe on consecutive weekends. Those who prefer to travel to Austria will find the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg on the calendar from 27 to 29 August. The Sachsenring is also secured for the long term, with the German GP set to be held there until 2031.

Which circuits have extended their contracts?

Alongside the presentation of the calendar, MotoGP extended several contracts. Mugello stays on the calendar until the end of 2031 with a new five-year deal. The contracts with the promoters in Portimão and Valencia were also renewed in the week of the calendar announcement.

This secures important classics for the first years of the new era. MotoGP itself speaks of a mix of historic circuits and new venues.

Why is the 2027 calendar a turning point for MotoGP?

The 2027 calendar coincides with the biggest technical overhaul in MotoGP for years. At the same time, it shows the direction the series wants to take under its new owner Liberty Media.

Technically, the premier class switches from 1,000 to 850 cubic centimetres of displacement. Aerodynamics are significantly restricted, and the so-called ride-height devices, systems for adjusting the bike’s height, are banned. In addition, Pirelli takes over from Michelin as the single tyre supplier. The 2026 season is therefore the last under the previous 1,000cc regulations.

Liberty Media took over MotoGP in July 2025. The new venues Buenos Aires and Adelaide are seen as a sign of a new strategy. The series apparently wants to open up new markets. This is particularly interesting in South America, as Formula 1 currently only races in Brazil there. Some of the tickets for 2027 are already on sale, and tickets for the remaining races are to be released gradually.
