Background: Noise pollution from motorcycles and tuned vehicles
Residents have long considered the road noise at Lake Sorpe, caused primarily by tuned cars and motorcycles, to be a significant nuisance. Police checks last year had already shown that some drivers were traveling at excessively high speeds. According to the interest group from which the new citizens’ initiative emerged, these are not isolated cases. The situation is described as increasingly problematic, especially during the summer months.
Official founding and goals of the citizens’ initiative
The previously loose interest group has decided to bundle its activities into an official citizens’ initiative. Under the motto “For a livable Langscheid,” targeted measures to reduce traffic noise and improve safety on the roads around Lake Sorpe will be promoted in the future. The focus will be on the frequently traveled routes through the residential area, especially in the areas of Goldammerweg, Amselweg, and Lindenstraße.
The organizers emphasize that the goal is to achieve a balanced coexistence between residents, visitors, and those seeking recreation. According to them, the main desire is for Langscheid to remain a livable and safe place.
Political support and options for action
In recent months, the interest group has sought contact with political representatives. According to the Green Party, discussions have been held with affected residents. SPD member of the Bundestag Dirk Wiese also visited the site to learn about the situation and expressed understanding for the residents’ concerns. He pointed out that a recent change in the law has given local authorities more options for taking targeted measures to calm traffic.
Criticism of the behavior of individual motorcyclists
In connection with the parking lot discussion at the “Futterbox” snack bar, members of the interest group repeatedly criticized the behavior of some motorcyclists. In particular, the noise from roaring engines in the area of the biker meeting places is perceived as a considerable nuisance by residents.
Police measures and warnings
The Hochsauerlandkreis (HSK) police have repeatedly pointed out the dangers of excessive speed and noise at Lake Sorpe. In police statements, it was emphasized that the deliberate manipulation of motorcycles, for example by removing DB eaters – components designed to reduce noise in exhaust systems – would not be tolerated. Technical modifications of this kind are illegal and will be consistently punished. In addition, it was pointed out that excessive noise has been proven to be harmful to health.
Founding meeting and opportunities to get involved
The founding meeting of the citizens’ initiative will take place on November 6 at 7 p.m. at the Langscheid sports park. Interested citizens who would like to work towards a quieter, safer, and more livable Langscheid are invited to get actively involved. However, this may also be of interest to motorcyclists who would like to get involved and perhaps provide some education.
