Steel & Speed 2026: Berlin’s Motorcycle Scene Shows What Article 2 Means

On May 9, 2026, the second edition of Steel & Speed rolled through the Berlin city center. 44 teams, a first-ever demonstration ride and rallies at historic landmarks made the format significantly larger than the previous year.
  • 44 teams, clubs and initiatives from Germany, Austria, Denmark and Poland participated
  • For the first time, a demonstration ride passed through the entire Berlin city center
  • Rallies at the East Side Gallery and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church lent the motto additional symbolic weight

What began as a fresh start in May 2025 on Karl-Marx-Allee has developed within a year into one of the most visible motorcycle demonstrations in Germany. Steel & Speed does not position itself as a conventional demonstration with a list of demands, but rather as a living platform for the diversity of biker culture. The event is organized by the Berlin-based association Freedom is our Religion e.V., which hosts the format annually in May. The motto remained unchanged in 2026: “Grundrecht zählt! – Artikel 2 in Bewegung” (Fundamental Rights Matter – Article 2 in Motion), a deliberate reference to the right to free development of personality enshrined in the German Basic Law.

What is Steel & Speed and Who’s Behind It?

Steel & Speed is a demonstration format organized by the Berlin-based association Freedom is our Religion e.V., held annually in May since 2025. The association was founded in 2017 when a change to the German associations law led to some motorcycle clubs being banned from wearing their club insignia. What began as a response to the so-called vest ban has evolved over the years into a broader movement for the civil liberties of motorcyclists. Freedom is our Religion also hosts a demonstration in September that specifically targets restrictions on motorcyclists’ freedoms. Steel & Speed, according to the organizers, pursues a different objective: rather than protesting against restrictions, the focus is on showcasing the diverse fields of activity within the motorcycle scene.

Lars Böhler from the initiative Schräglagenfreiheit, who is responsible for marketing and communications within the organizing team, described the core idea before the first edition: every biker lives motorcycling in their own way, whether through travel, engineering, art, social engagement or journalism. Steel & Speed aims to give all these areas a face. Party-political content is explicitly excluded. Political engagement is welcome, provided it relates to topics from the motorcycle scene, such as the fight for nonprofit status of associations, traffic safety, or the preservation of motorcycle cultural institutions.

How Did Steel & Speed 2026 Unfold?

The second edition took place on May 9, 2026, with the starting point once again at Strausberger Platz in Berlin. Arrivals began from 1:00 PM, with the official start set for 2:00 PM. Hundreds of participants from Germany and international guests from Denmark, Austria and Poland, among others, answered the call.

Compared to the previous year, the format grew significantly. In 2025, the event had been concentrated on Karl-Marx-Allee. In 2026, a full demonstration ride through the entire Berlin city center was added for the first time. According to the organizers, the convoy of motorcycles and creative demonstration floats passed by historic landmarks and drew considerable attention in the early summer weather. Numerous spectators reportedly lined the streets along the route.

Also new were two rallies at locations with particular significance for freedom: at the East Side Gallery, the longest surviving section of the Berlin Wall, and at the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. Both stops were intended to lend additional symbolic weight to the demonstration motto and to underscore the ambition of not only making motorcycle culture visible but also sparking broader societal debates about freedom and personal responsibility.

Which Teams and Clubs Participated in Steel & Speed 2026?

A total of 44 teams, clubs and initiatives presented themselves. The spectrum ranged from established motorcycle clubs such as Mephisto’s Mob MC Berlin, the Bloody Devils MC Germany and Lone’s MC Germany, through advocacy groups like the Biker Union e.V. and the initiative Schräglagenfreiheit, to regional riding groups and creative collectives like Blubberbande, Simsongarde and Back to the Roots.

International participation grew noticeably compared to the previous year. Ragnarök MC Austria represented participants from Austria, while Nordman Biker MC Northland traveled from Denmark. Guests from Poland also came to Berlin. According to the press release, the lineup demonstrated the breadth the organizers aim for: heavy choppers stood alongside modern supersports, touring machines next to classic custom builds.

The concept provides for each team to design its own appearance. Böhler explained ahead of the first edition that at Steel & Speed, every team launches with its own boat. Everyone should be perceived as what they are. Presenting their own political message is not mandatory, as the overarching motto of the demonstration is already set.

What Was New at the Talk Format and Closing Event?

For the first time in 2026, a talk format took place at Olympischer Platz at the conclusion of the demonstration. The organizers introduced it under the title “STOP – See the other part,” a conversation format by Dirk and Lars about topics from the motorcycle scene. The stated goal is to give people, projects and organizations from the motorcycle community greater visibility and to create space for personal stories, engagement and perspectives. Initial announcements suggest the format could also establish itself as a standalone podcast and vlog offering beyond the event day itself.

The emotional conclusion of the day came at an evening event hosted by Berlin motorcycle club Mephisto’s Mob, one of the oldest motorcycle clubs in the capital. The concept envisions the official closing party being hosted by a different organization each year. Clubs and associations are thus given the opportunity to present themselves and increase their visibility within the scene.

Why Berlin as the Venue?

The choice of Berlin as the event location is no coincidence but has historical depth. The capital has been considered a center of German motorcycle culture for decades, shaped by the unique history of the divided city. In West Berlin, the motorcycle scene after World War II was strongly influenced by Western culture; American films like Easy Rider inspired a generation of riders, and the city’s island status fostered an independent development of biker culture. In the East, despite state restrictions, a distinct scene formed around motorcycles like the MZ, the Simson and the AWO, cultivating a pronounced culture of improvisation and hands-on mechanical work.

After reunification in 1990, both worlds collided. Western brands became a symbol of newfound freedom for many East Berliners, while others held on to their East German machines. From this fusion emerged a scene known to this day for its openness, diversity and the connection between urban culture and motorcycle tradition. With landmarks like the legendary Spinnerbrücke, Berlin offers traditional meeting points and a close interweaving of motorcycle, music and club culture that is rarely found in this form in other German cities.

Steel & Speed draws on this historical depth. The demonstration ride through the city center with rallies at the East Side Gallery and the Memorial Church deliberately bridges the history of the divided city to today’s demand for the free development of personality.

How Does Steel & Speed Differ From the September Demonstration?

Freedom is our Religion has held an annual motorcycle demonstration in Berlin every September since 2017, which primarily targets restrictions on the civil liberties of motorcyclists, particularly the vest ban and similar regulations. Steel & Speed complements this format with a different focus. Rather than protesting against something, the aim is to showcase the diversity of the scene to the outside world.

Böhler emphasized in advance that both formats have different objectives but ideally complement each other. Freedom is our Religion is about sending a signal against restrictions and the collective discrediting of motorcyclists. Steel & Speed, by contrast, puts the spotlight on the activities and causes of the participants. His recommendation to every biker is to consistently combine attendance at both events.

The organizers also stress that Steel & Speed should not be perceived as a mobilization tool for the September demonstration, but as an independent format with its own identity. Alongside the parade and demonstration ride, the concept deliberately includes elements like the talk format and the rotating closing party that go beyond a pure demonstration event.

What Does Steel & Speed Mean for the German Motorcycle Scene?

Steel & Speed takes its place within a landscape of motorcycle events in Berlin that ranges from the Berlin Motorcycle Days trade fair to the Fellows Ride to the memorial ride. The format occupies its own niche: it is neither a trade fair nor a charity ride, but a demonstration that understands motorcycle culture as a social and political phenomenon without becoming party-political.

The organizers’ ambitions extend beyond the event day itself. Steel & Speed sees itself as a catalyst for networking within the scene and aims to give visibility to projects that otherwise tend to operate in niche spaces. The initiative Schräglagenfreiheit, which focuses among other things on road closures affecting motorcyclists, uses the format just as much as social projects and integrative riding groups.

Whether Steel & Speed will establish itself as a permanent fixture on the German motorcycle scene calendar after two successful editions remains to be seen in the coming years. The next date is already set: the format is scheduled to enter its third edition in May 2027.
