A 48-second video showing the so-called Superman trick on the Kuantan bypass road sparked outrage in Malaysia. Just days later, police arrested three women believed to have taken part in the dangerous stunt.
  • Three women aged 18 to 21 were arrested in Kuantan on Saturday.
  • The trigger was a video from July 16 that went viral on Facebook.
  • Police seized three Yamaha LC135 motorcycles and are investigating for reckless driving.

A short video clip from the Malaysian city of Kuantan triggered an arrest within just a few days. It shows a group of motorcyclists lying flat on their bikes at high speed with their arms and legs stretched out. The case shows how quickly risky stunts filmed for social media can have legal consequences.

What Is the Superman Trick on a Motorcycle?

In the Superman trick, the rider lies flat on the moving motorcycle and stretches their arms and legs out behind them, creating a pose reminiscent of a flying comic-book hero. This position is particularly dangerous because at high speed the rider has almost no control over the bike and cannot react quickly enough in an emergency.

In the viral clip, several riders perform the stunt together as a group. The video mainly sparked public concern that the riders were endangering not only themselves but other road users as well.

How Did Police Track Down the Three Women?

The investigation began with the Facebook video, which surfaced shortly after the incident in the early morning hours of July 16. The traffic investigation unit of the Kuantan district police analyzed the footage and identified the registered owners of the motorcycles involved.

Shortly afterward, several people came forward at the Kuantan traffic police station to help with the investigation. The three women, aged 18 to 21, were arrested on Saturday. According to district police chief Ashari Abu Samah, two of the women said they worked as sales assistants, while the third worked as a hotel receptionist in the region. During questioning, all three reportedly admitted their involvement in the dangerous ride.

What Legal Consequences Do the Three Women Face?

Police are investigating under Section 42(1) of Malaysia’s Road Transport Act 1987, which covers reckless and dangerous driving that endangers other road users. Officers seized three Yamaha LC135 motorcycles as evidence.

The district police chief stressed that his department would not compromise when dangerous stunts put the safety of the rider and other road users at risk. He also appealed to the public not to use social media as a stage for seeking attention through unlawful acts.

How Is Police Responding to Viral Stunts?

Police see such viral videos as a growing problem and are urging greater responsibility on the road. Ashari Abu Samah stated: “Jalan raya bukan tempat untuk berlumba atau menunjukkan keberanian, sebaliknya perlu digunakan secara berhemah dan bertanggungjawab.” In English: “The road is not a place for racing or showing off courage; it must be used prudently and responsibly.”

He also called on the public to report traffic violations or illegal races to the police so that authorities can respond quickly. The case in Kuantan adds to the ongoing debate over how authorities should handle dangerous riding maneuvers staged specifically for distribution on social media.
