A motorcyclist collided with a car in Delta near Vancouver and sustained serious injuries. The force of the impact launched his motorcycle into the air, where it became lodged on a traffic signal above the intersection.
  • The crash occurred on May 9, 2026, at approximately 3:00 PM local time on Scott Road in Delta, British Columbia
  • The motorcyclist sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries
  • According to police, excessive speed was a likely contributing factor

What initially looks like a scene from a movie actually played out at a busy intersection in the Canadian city of Delta, located in the Greater Vancouver area in the province of British Columbia. On Saturday, May 9, 2026, a motorcyclist collided with a car, and the aftermath of the crash left behind an image that has since spread rapidly across social media: the motorcycle ended up hanging from a traffic light several meters above the road.

What exactly happened in the motorcycle crash in Delta?

The crash occurred shortly before 3:00 PM local time in the 7100 block of Scott Road, at the intersection of 72nd Avenue and 120th Street. According to the Delta Police Department, a motorcycle struck a car at high speed. The force of the impact was so enormous that the motorcycle was launched into the air. It shot upward, flew across the intersection and ultimately became lodged in the mounting bracket of a traffic signal suspended above the roadway.

Photos from the crash scene show the blue motorcycle in a vertical position, with the traffic signal pole wedged between the front wheel and the frame. Surveillance cameras in the area captured the moment of impact. The footage shows the motorcyclist colliding with the car at the level of the right headlight before being catapulted through the air along with the motorcycle.

How seriously was the motorcyclist injured?

The motorcyclist sustained serious injuries in the collision and was immediately transported to hospital. According to a statement from the Delta Police Department, his injuries were not life-threatening. The driver of the car involved was uninjured.

What do police say about the cause of the crash?

Delta police believe excessive speed was a significant factor in the crash. In an official statement, the department said speed had been identified as a likely contributing cause. The precise investigation into the sequence of events was still ongoing at the time of reporting. Scott Road was closed to traffic between 70th Avenue and 72nd Avenue while emergency crews cleared the vehicles and debris from the roadway.

How was the motorcycle removed from the traffic light?

The Delta Fire Department (Delta Firefighters IAFF Local 1763) was on scene alongside police and paramedics. In a Facebook post, the fire department explained that crews first attended to the injured and secured the crash site. The motorcycle was then recovered from the traffic signal assembly. In their statement, the fire department also addressed the public, emphasizing that incidents like these are distressing for everyone involved. They wished those affected and their families a full recovery, while also reminding people of the importance of speed limits and attentiveness in traffic.

Why has the crash attracted international attention?

The unusual scene of a motorcycle dangling from a traffic light drew numerous onlookers to the crash site. Many pulled out their smartphones and filmed the recovery operation. Photos and videos spread across social media within hours and were picked up by media outlets worldwide.

A Surrey resident named William Chan, who according to the Canadian broadcaster CBC happened to pass the crash site on his way to a nearby donut shop, described his reaction to local media: “Never seen anything like this, like seeing a movie.”

Another witness named Jevon Ryan expressed equal disbelief. He said he could not comprehend how the motorcycle had ended up in that position. One would expect it to fly onto the sidewalk or toward the shops, but for it to be launched so precisely upward and wrap itself around the traffic signal mounting was almost impossible to fathom.

Motorcycle crashes and the physics behind them

While it is rare for a motorcycle to be flung so far and so high through the air in a collision, it is entirely explainable from a physics standpoint. When a comparatively light vehicle like a motorcycle strikes a stationary or slow-moving car at high speed, the impact energy can catapult the two-wheeler upward like a ramp. The speed limit in the area is 50 km/h. If the motorcyclist was travelling significantly faster, as police suspect, this would explain the enormous force with which the vehicle was launched skyward.

The incident in Delta falls into a category of traffic accidents whose visual aftermath is so extraordinary that it generates worldwide attention. For the motorcyclist involved, the day ended with serious injuries that, according to authorities, are not life-threatening.
