Aerodynamics as the key to efficiency
WMC first gained attention in 2021 with the WMC250EV, an electrically powered land speed record machine. Its most striking feature: a large, cylindrical air duct that runs through the motorcycle and, according to the manufacturer, is designed to reduce drag by up to 70% compared to conventional road motorcycles. This technology was later integrated into the WMC300FR, a three-wheeled hybrid version based on the Yamaha Tricity, which was used by the Northamptonshire Police, among others.
WMC also collaborated with Zero Motorcycles to develop a unique concept vehicle based on the SR/S, using the same aerodynamic technology. Now the company is taking the next step and working with Pininfarina on a design that translates these principles into a future hybrid road motorcycle.
Pininfarina brings in design and wind tunnel experience
Pininfarina is known for its iconic automotive designs and has worked with Ferrari since 1951. The company has operated its own wind tunnel since 1972 and now uses it not only for the aerodynamic analysis of vehicles, but also to optimize thermal comfort for drivers. This expertise is now being incorporated into the joint development with WMC.
The first results of the cooperation were presented on March 6 on the occasion of Pininfarina’s 95th anniversary. Robert White, founder and CEO of White Motorcycle Concepts, presented not only the concept, but also the company’s previous developments, including the WMC250EV, the WMC300E+ as a three-wheeled first responder vehicle and the WMCSRS developed with Zero Motorcycles.
The concept: hybrid drive with forced air induction
The new concept from WMC and Pininfarina is based on a small, turbocharged combustion engine combined with a hybrid system. As with previous WMC designs, air is directed through a central duct that starts below the handlebars and exits under the rider’s seat. This is intended to reduce drag and improve fuel efficiency.
In addition to its technical function, the air duct is also intended to be a design element of the motorcycle. Robert White emphasizes the importance of this combination:
“It was a real pleasure to work with Pininfarina on these initial concept designs. I am particularly proud of how we have managed to integrate the air duct as both a structural and stylistic feature in a clad and naked concept.”
Looking to the future
While the current designs are still concept studies, White Motorcycle Concepts’ technology could represent a new approach to more efficient motorcycles. Aerodynamic optimization is becoming increasingly important, especially in the context of hybrid and electric mobility.
Whether and when such a motorcycle will come onto the market remains to be seen. However, the collaboration between WMC and Pininfarina shows that innovative ideas in motorcycle construction can open up new possibilities not only from a technological but also from a design perspective.
