John McGuinness: these ten motorcycles tell the story of his 30 TT years

At this year’s Classic TT, John McGuinness gets an exhibition of his own featuring ten motorcycles from three decades on the Mountain Course. Entry is free, and to close things out the 53-year-old will ride one more lap on the machine he made history with in 2007.
  • Dates: daily from 19 to 28 August at the Mercury Club near the TT Grandstand
  • Free entry, plus a dedicated cinema showing race footage from 30 years
  • Parade lap on Friday, 28 August, at 3.30pm

Anyone who follows the TT cannot get past John McGuinness. He first came to the island in 1996 on a Honda RS250R, and since then he has amassed 23 wins, 100 starts and the first lap at more than 130 miles per hour. To mark the 30th anniversary of his debut, the organisers are now staging an exhibition that tells the story of that era through the motorcycles themselves.

What exactly does the John McGuinness exhibition at the Classic TT show?

The John McGuinness MBE Pop-Up Exhibition and Cinema features ten displays, each built around a motorcycle from a key moment in his career. Every machine is accompanied by the leathers and the helmet McGuinness wore during that phase.

Everything is housed in the Mercury Club, just a short walk from the Grandstand. It is open daily from 19 to 28 August and entry is free. Alongside the motorcycles there is a further area with photographs, personal items and memorabilia intended to trace the rider’s impact on the sport. That includes the MBE he received for services to motorcycle racing. A retail area selling merchandise is also planned.

Which motorcycles are on display?

First up is the Honda RS250R that McGuinness brought to the island with Paul Bird in 1996. Then come the Honda 250 from his first TT win at the 1999 Lightweight TT, the Yamaha R1 that delivered his first Superbike success in 2004, and the Honda Fireblade from the anniversary year of 2007.

That Fireblade is the centrepiece of the collection. On it, McGuinness became the first rider at the Centenary TT to lap at an average of more than 130 miles per hour, the equivalent of a good 209 km/h, around the 37.73-mile (roughly 60.7-kilometre) course. The so-called 130 Club remains a very small group to this day. The organiser puts it like this: considerably more people have been to space than there are riders who have circulated the Mountain Course at that pace.

Also on show is the Honda CBR1000RR from the 2015 Senior TT. It was McGuinness’ most recent TT win to date and is regarded by many as one of his strongest performances. Rounding off the line-up is the special edition of the Honda Fireblade from 2026, created to mark the 30th anniversary, which he rode at this year’s races.

Why does the Voodoo helmet get its own section?

Because the design has belonged to McGuinness since 1999 as much as his race number. The voodoo doll motif has appeared on his helmets ever since, tied to a pre-race ritual that is at least as well known in the TT scene as the rider himself.

A dedicated installation has therefore been assembled for the exhibition, showing several of these helmets side by side and explaining the background to how they came about. Anyone interested in helmet design gets one of the rare opportunities here to see a single motif develop over more than two decades in one place.

What is showing in the cinema and around it?

A dedicated cinema has been set up inside the Mercury Club, screening career highlights, famous races and special features from three decades of TT. The programme is rounded out by live events on site.

Among other things, a live recording of the TT Podcast with Chris Pritchard and Lee Johnston is planned, with companions from his career sharing their memories. There is also a special episode of Between the Hedges on the TT+ platform, in which friends, rivals and contemporaries have their say.

When does McGuinness ride the parade lap?

The John McGuinness MBE Parade Lap is scheduled for Friday, 28 August, at 3.30pm. It closes out the celebrations.

What makes it special is the kit: McGuinness is set to ride exactly the machine he used in 2007, wearing the same leathers, the same gloves and the same helmet as back then. The organiser describes the lap as a return to the moment that still resonates more strongly today than the win he took that day. That places the event in a Classic TT tradition which last year was dedicated to Joey Dunlop’s treble from 2000.

How his career has changed over three decades

With 23 victories, McGuinness sits behind Michael Dunlop on 33 and Joey Dunlop on 26 in the all-time TT winners’ list. What stands out is the breadth: he has won in almost every class, from Lightweight 250 through Singles, Lightweight 400, Supersport and Superstock to Superbike and the electric TT Zero.

His story is closely tied to how the event itself has developed. He won on two-strokes and on an electric motorcycle, took victory in the final Singles race and in the last 400cc event. The beginning came long before all that: at eleven he skipped school, took his BMX on the ferry and travelled to the island to watch the races. In 2022 he was awarded the MBE.

What comes next for McGuinness after the Classic TT?

That remains open. According to media reports, talks with Honda about the 2027 season are on the cards, and there is so far no decision on his future at the TT.

That is precisely what gives the exhibition its particular role this year. It sums up what has accumulated over 30 years, without it being clear whether anything more will be added. For the 2026 Classic TT, that makes it one of the programme items around which the crowds at the Grandstand are likely to gather.
