Kove 625X: New mid-range adventure bike from China takes off

The Chinese brand Kove, known for its ambitious export plans and models such as the 800X Pro, is preparing the next step with the 625X.  The new mid-range touring enduro has been officially type-approved in China and is set to go into series production this year – with a clear message to the established Japanese manufacturers in the segment.

Engine: 580.7 cm³ despite the “625” name

At the heart of the new Kove 625X is an in-line two-cylinder engine with a displacement of 580.7 cm³ – despite the “625” designation.  The liquid-cooled engine with 76 mm bore and 64 mm stroke uses a 270-degree crankshaft, which ensures a V2-like sound.  This design combines the compact format of a parallel twin with the characteristics of a 90-degree V-twin.

According to the approval documents, the maximum output is 63 hp (46.3 kW) – presumably at 9,000 rpm.  The maximum torque, based on the almost identical unit in the Voge DS625X, is likely to be around 57 Nm (42 lb-ft) at 6,500 rpm.  Power is transmitted in the classic manner via a six-speed gearbox with foot-operated gearshift and clutch.

In-house development instead of purchase

While the engine of the Voge DS625X and the Kove 625R is almost identical in terms of appearance and technology, the 625X goes one step further: according to the approval, the drive is not bought in, but produced by Kove itself.  This positions the manufacturer as an increasingly independent player on the market.

Chassis: Solid technology for everyday use and touring

The chassis consists of a tubular steel frame, supplemented by an aluminum swingarm with central suspension strut and an upside-down fork at the front.  The wheel combination of 19-inch front and 17-inch rear is clearly aimed at all-round use.  The spoke wheels are tubeless-compatible thanks to external spoke mounts – a common detail on modern adventure bikes.

The 625X is fitted with CST tires in the dimensions 110/90-19 at the front and 150/70-17 at the rear.  The brake system comes from Taisco and uses petal-shaped brake discs with axially mounted callipers at the front – solid, albeit not high-end components.

Dimensions and weight

With a wheelbase of 1,471 mm (57.9 inches) and a ready-to-ride weight of 229 kg (505 lbs), the 625X ranks in the middle class between models such as the Moto Morini X-Cape 650 and the Benelli TRK 702.  Compared to the lighter Kove 800X, which only weighs around 185 kg (408 lbs), the 625X is noticeably more massive, but probably significantly cheaper.

Positioning and price

While the Kove 800X Pro is available in the USA for around $10,999 (approx. €10,200), the new 625X is likely to be priced significantly lower.  Models such as the Moto Morini X-Cape cost around $8,000 (approx. €7,430) in the USA – a realistic starting point for the new Kove model if it is officially launched in Western markets.

Conclusion: Interesting option for beginners and touring riders

With the 625X, Kove is expanding its adventure bike range with a more affordable model suitable for everyday use.  The technical data points to solid components and proven technology, coupled with a price tag to compete with Japanese and Italian rivals.  Should the model make the leap to Europe and the USA, it could well be of interest to beginners and price-conscious touring riders.
