Kove 450R: China’s Inline-Four Naked Bike Gets a Complete Redesign After Just Two Years

Chinese manufacturer Kove is giving its 443cc inline-four naked bike a comprehensive overhaul. The redesign brings KTM 390 Duke-inspired styling, upgraded brakes, and a new TFT display.

  • New design bears a striking resemblance to the KTM 390 Duke

Kove is part of a new generation of Chinese motorcycle manufacturers that have made a name for themselves with a remarkable pace of development in recent years. In addition to the 450 Rally, which is already available in several export markets including the US, it is the brand’s inline-four range from Chongqing that is generating particular attention. The Kove 450R, a naked bike powered by a 443cc inline-four engine, is now set for a comprehensive overhaul just two years after its original unveiling.

New Design with Unmistakable Influences

The most striking change concerns the styling. The previous 450R featured a front-end design with twin side-by-side headlights beneath a furrowed fairing, reminiscent of a Kawasaki Z1000 or Z1100, accompanied by prominent air intakes on either side of the tank. The revised version takes a completely different approach. Sharp-edged, forward-jutting side panels, a new headlight flanked by LED daytime running light strips, and an overall more angular design language define the new look. The similarities to the KTM 390 Duke are hard to overlook. The orange paintwork of the model that appeared in type-approval documents reinforces this impression further. While it is not quite an outright copy, the visual parallels are undeniable.

Kove managed to achieve the new look without having to change too many components. The front side panels and radiator cowls are newly designed, but the tank remains unchanged. The seat and tail unit were also carried over from the predecessor without modifications. Additional changes include a new TFT display behind the reshaped nose cowl, new LED turn signals at the front, and redesigned mirrors on newly sculpted stalks.

Proven Inline-Four Engine with 64 HP

Beneath the new bodywork, the familiar inline-four with 443cc displacement continues to do duty, originally borrowed from the fully faired 450RR sister model. According to the type-approval documents, the engine has not been modified, so peak power is expected to remain at a claimed 64 hp (approximately 48 kW). The 450RR, as a fully faired sportbike, produces 70 hp (52 kW) at 13,000 rpm by comparison and delivers a maximum torque of 39 Nm at 10,500 rpm. The 450RR has also recently received a facelift of its own, already its second since launching as an initially 400cc machine in 2022. The sister model’s styling leans more towards the Ducati Panigale V4 and was spotted in Chinese type-approval documents with a new mustache-style front wing.

Chassis Largely Unchanged, Brakes Significantly Upgraded

The basic chassis architecture of the new 450R remains intact. A tubular steel frame, an aluminum swingarm with monoshock, and upside-down forks continue to form the foundation. The wheelbase measures 138.4 cm (54.5 inches). A genuine improvement has been made to the braking system, however: the previous axial-mount calipers give way to radial-mount four-piston units. At the same time, semi-floating brake discs replace the previously solid-mounted versions. These are upgrades likely to have a direct impact on braking performance.

The type-approval documents show that the new version weighs in at 165 kg (364 lbs), roughly one kilogram (2.2 lbs) heavier than its predecessor. Top speed is rated at 204 km/h (127 mph), an impressive figure for a naked bike displacing just 450cc.

Export Plans and Market Position

Until now, the Kove 450R has primarily been available in Asian markets. The outgoing model never made it to the US despite its short lifespan. Kove has indicated, however, that it wants to offer its four-cylinder street models in more markets going forward. This means the updated 450R could potentially reach the US market and possibly Europe as well. Additionally, Kove is working on a larger inline-four with a displacement between 600 and 800cc, based on the 450 platform’s design and said to have better prospects for global distribution.

In the small-displacement inline-four naked bike segment, the Kove 450R remains largely without direct competition. Kawasaki has yet to release a Z variant based on the ZX-4R, and other manufacturers primarily offer twin-cylinder or single-cylinder models in the sub-500cc class. Even in China, where the number of four-cylinder motorcycles has surged over the past year, most new models sit in the 600 to 700cc range.
