Vinales counters KTM rumours: why his shoulder now decides

Maverick Vinales has publicly contradicted reports of an immediate end to his MotoGP spell with Red Bull KTM Tech3. At the centre of it all is less the dispute with the manufacturer than the condition of his left shoulder.
  • A report from Spain raised the prospect of an early exit for Vinales on 2 August, with test rider Pol Espargaro as his replacement
  • Vinales responded on Sunday via Instagram and ruled out both a move to World Superbike and an early departure
  • The British Grand Prix at Silverstone runs from 7 to 9 August and marks the restart after the summer break

The 2026 MotoGP season enters its second half after the summer break, and at exactly this point the future of one rider is more open than ever. Maverick Vinales, 31 years old, number 12 and racing for Red Bull KTM Tech3 since 2025, has been at the centre of speculation for weeks. In recent days that speculation has sharpened, because for the first time the debate is no longer only about 2027 but about the coming race weekends.

What has Maverick Vinales said about the rumours?

Vinales rejected the reports of an immediate exit on Sunday in an Instagram story and announced that he will see out the season as contracted. He wrote: “I start to read articles without sense. Last week I’ve been in the APC centre and we start to understand why I’m not able to recover. I’m contrasting all this information with my doctors to check if this is the problem and what is the way to improve. Stop writing stupid articles about me, I will not race in SBK and I will finish the year as my contract says.”

APC stands for the Red Bull Athlete Performance Center, a facility for performance diagnostics and rehabilitation in Thalgau near Salzburg. Vinales was there in connection with an appointment at the Red Bull Ring, where he was checked over again by specialists.

Why did the report cause such a stir?

The report from Spain did not describe a normal rider market reshuffle but a split in the middle of the running season. According to it, KTM is looking at how Vinales can be taken off the bike as quickly as possible and without financial or public damage. Test rider Pol Espargaro has already been called up for the British GP, an assignment that could extend across the entire rest of the season. The background, according to this report, is the wish to avoid a public exchange of blows over the remaining eleven Grands Prix of the year.

There has been no official confirmation from KTM or Tech3 so far. A media representative who asked the manufacturer for a statement said he received no answer.

What is wrong with Maverick Vinales’ shoulder?

Vinales has been dealing for more than a year with the consequences of an injury to his left shoulder, which he sustained in July 2025 in qualifying for the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring. During surgery a screw was fitted which later shifted and caused severe pain. A further operation followed in spring 2026 to remove the screw.

Back on the RC16, the Spaniard nevertheless did not rediscover his old form. What is described is a persistent weakness that shows up above all in left-hand corners and during quick changes of direction to the left. According to information from his circle, another operation is even under consideration. Were that to happen, his 2026 season would be over.

The Sachsenring weekend in July 2026 made the situation publicly visible. In the sprint Vinales finished last, more than 31 seconds down. In the Grand Prix he ran in last place for a long time before pitting and parking the bike. Until then he had always insisted that his condition was not limiting him. Afterwards it sounded different: it was frustrating, and it was obvious that he was not fit.

What is the contract dispute with KTM about?

At its core it is the question of whether Vinales had a valid commitment for 2027 or not. He says yes; KTM contradicts that account on key points.

Vinales rides for the customer team Tech3 in 2025 and 2026, but his contract ties him directly to KTM. After a strong start to the 2025 season the manufacturer held out the prospect of a promotion to the factory team. In the agreement KTM held a unilateral option until 30 June to extend the deal by another year. When the factory team instead signed Alex Marquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio for 2027 and no signals came from Tech3, the frustration grew. At the Czech Grand Prix in Brno, Vinales said that in the winter he had been in the factory team and now he no longer even knew where he stood. If his MotoGP career were to end, there would be only one party to blame, namely KTM. Shortly afterwards he described how KTM had sent him a contract, how he had signed it, and how two weeks later he was told it was not valid.

How does KTM present the matter?

KTM motorsport director Pit Beirer denies having pushed Vinales out and describes a negotiation process that broke down over the question of factory team or Tech3. Speaking on the official MotoGP channel, Beirer explained that in the summer of 2025 the door to a factory seat had indeed been opened. Vinales had reassured them at the time that he would be back from Spielberg onwards. After that they waited week after week to see him in top form again. When the opportunity arose to sign Marquez and Di Giannantonio, Vinales was far from his earlier form.

Beirer stressed that the Spaniard was never turned down: “We never said no to Maverick.” KTM sees both squads as four equal factory seats, and one seat is still free. At the same time he made the time pressure clear: “The spot is open but time is ticking against us.” Asked about it at the Sachsenring, Beirer also cast doubt on the contract signature described by Vinales and spoke of a paper containing a kind of letter of intent.

Who will ride for Tech3 in 2027?

Confirmation is still outstanding, but Luca Marini and Senna Agius are considered the favourites. Talks with Marini, who is leaving HRC at the end of the season, have reportedly been running since the Grand Prix at Assen. Manuel Gonzalez is also being linked with the French squad. Tech3 CEO Günther Steiner had said earlier that the team did not want to carry any baggage from the past, which is why riders from the existing structure do not necessarily fit into the future. At the factory team, by contrast, the line-up is fixed: Alex Marquez arrives from Gresini, Fabio Di Giannantonio from VR46.

What happens next at Silverstone?

The restart after the summer break takes place from 7 to 9 August at Silverstone, and whether Vinales will be on the RC16 there was recently unclear. According to an Italian media report on Sunday afternoon, he is set to sit out the British GP and be replaced by Pol Espargaro while the results of the latest examinations are evaluated. There was initially no confirmation of this from KTM or Tech3, and other sources have not backed up the account so far.

Such an absence would not contradict the Spaniard’s statements. He has ruled out a move to World Superbike and an early end to his contract, but not sitting out individual races for medical reasons. Espargaro has already filled that role several times when Vinales was missing through injury.

Everything in the second half of the 2026 season therefore hinges on a medical question. If the decision goes against another operation, Vinales can deliver on his announcement and contest the remaining Grands Prix. If it goes in favour of surgery, his year would end early, and the dispute over contracts and statements would turn into a sporting turning point.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will Maverick Vinales race at the British GP at Silverstone?

That is open. According to an Italian report, Vinales is set to sit out the race from 7 to 9 August and be replaced by Pol Espargaro. There was initially no official confirmation from KTM or Tech3.

  • What is wrong with Maverick Vinales’ shoulder?

He injured his left shoulder in July 2025 in qualifying at the Sachsenring. A screw fitted during the operation later shifted and was removed in a second procedure in spring 2026. Since then he has complained above all about a lack of strength in left-hand corners.

  • Is Maverick Vinales moving to World Superbike?

No. In his Instagram story on Sunday, Vinales explicitly ruled out a move to World Superbike and announced that he will finish the current season as contracted.

  • Why did the dispute between Vinales and KTM escalate?

The starting point was the promotion to the factory team he had been promised, which never happened. KTM signed Alex Marquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio for 2027 instead. Vinales then stated publicly that he had signed a contract which was later declared invalid.

  • Who is set to ride for Tech3 in 2027?

Nothing has been confirmed yet. Luca Marini and Senna Agius are seen as the favourites for the two seats, and Manuel Gonzalez is also mentioned.
