- 1,933 Honda CBR 600 RR units from model year 2024 are affected in Germany
- The cause is incorrect surface roughness of the cylinders due to faulty honing
- If anomalies are found, Honda replaces the complete engine because the cylinders are integral to the crankcase
In January 2026, an uncomfortable series of events began for Honda. Within just a few weeks, the Japanese manufacturer had to initiate two recalls for excessive oil consumption that appeared similar at first glance but had completely different technical causes. In addition to the CB 1000 Hornet, where faulty piston rings are the problem, the supersport CBR 600 RR is also affected. In its case, the cause lies deeper within the engine, and that is precisely what makes the repair so complex. As of May 2026, it is clear how Honda intends to solve the problem, and some owners will end up with a completely new engine in their machine.

What Caused the Honda CBR 600 RR Recall?
The cause lies in faulty surface machining of the cylinders. According to Honda, the surface roughness of the cylinder bores on affected machines from model year 2024 is out of specification. Something went wrong during honing, the fine finishing process of the cylinder inner walls, during production.
During honing, fine crosshatch patterns are machined into the cylinder wall. These grooves ensure that a uniform oil film forms, which lubricates the piston rings while simultaneously wiping away excess oil. If the roughness is incorrect, this delicate balance is thrown off.
Three scenarios come into consideration. With insufficiently deep honing, the cylinder wall would be too smooth, the piston rings could not break in properly, and there is a risk of piston seizure due to inadequate lubrication. With excessively deep honing, the honing marks are too pronounced and retain more oil in the combustion chamber than the piston rings can scrape away. This oil then burns with every power stroke. And with an incorrect honing angle, meaning an angle too obtuse at over 45 degrees, the piston pulls oil upward during its upstroke, where it also combusts. The most likely cause for the CBR 600 RR is considered to be excessively deep honing, meaning honing marks that are too coarse and retain too much oil in the combustion chamber.
Honda UK confirmed to MCN that the surface finish of the cylinder bore had been too rough in some cases. “The 24-26YM CBR600RR is now subject to a safety recall related to oil consumption. In the UK, the number of affected units is just over 1000.” According to Honda UK, the problem was attributed to the tooling used during the machining process.
What Risks Does High Oil Consumption Pose for the CBR 600 RR?
The dropping oil level can cause oil pressure to fall to the point where the connecting rod bearings are no longer adequately lubricated. In the worst case, the connecting rod bearings seize, which can lead to a locked rear wheel. Additionally, there is a risk that leaking oil comes into contact with hot exhaust components and ignites. This is precisely why the US traffic authority NHTSA classified the recall as safety-relevant.
In the United States, authorized dealerships had already received a service bulletin with detailed instructions in December 2025. They were instructed to check and document the oil level on affected motorcycles, then drain the oil and inspect it for metallic foreign particles. The focus was on reddish particles made of copper, which indicate damaged connecting rod bearings. Small particles of aluminum or steel were considered harmless, especially on low-mileage machines during the break-in period. Affected owners in the US were advised to bring their machines to the dealership approximately every 500 kilometers for an oil check until Honda could offer a permanent solution.

How Many Honda CBR 600 RRs Are Affected Worldwide?
In Germany, according to Honda, 1,933 CBR 600 RR vehicles from model year 2024 are affected by the recall campaign. Honda Germany confirmed to MOTORRAD: “We are aware that a number of customers have raised concerns regarding excessive oil consumption of the CBR 600 RR. Following a thorough investigation in cooperation with Honda Motor Co., Ltd (Japan), we are now initiating a safety recall campaign. 1,933 CBR 600 RR vehicles from model year 2024 have been registered on the German market.”
In the United States, according to the official NHTSA report, 1,253 machines from model years 2024 to 2026 are affected. Production dates range from January 10, 2024 to November 12, 2025. The recall bears NHTSA campaign number 25V891, and Honda’s internal number is KT5. In the United Kingdom, just over 1,000 units are affected, while in Austria, 250 machines are involved. The recall in Austria started on January 19, 2026.
Why Does the CBR 600 RR Recall Differ from the Hornet Recall?
Although both recalls are related to high oil consumption, the cause and repair complexity are fundamentally different. With the CB 1000 Hornet, the problem lies in faulty piston and piston ring settings. There, the cylinder bank can be removed and the pistons can be replaced.
With the CBR 600 RR, the engine construction is decisively different. The cylinder bank forms the upper part of the crankcase, meaning the cylinders are not individually replaceable. Even replacing just the upper crankcase half alone would be more complex than replacing the complete engine. This is why the repair for the CBR 600 RR is considerably more extensive than for the Hornet.

How Does the Honda CBR 600 RR Repair Process Work?
The affected motorcycles are not repaired at ordinary authorized dealerships but are transported to specially established expert centers across Europe. There, mechanics disassemble the engines far enough to measure the cylinders. If the surface roughness is outside tolerance, Honda installs a new engine.
Whether the already removed cylinder head is retained or also replaced during an engine swap is currently unknown. Likewise, there are no binding estimates for the duration of the repair. One known case from Japan took approximately one month. The repair is free of charge for all owners.
In the meantime, dealers offer affected owners a complimentary oil top-up service. Honda has not prohibited riders from continuing to use their motorcycles but recommends regular oil level checks. In the US, a first notification had already been sent to owners in February 2026, which merely informed them about the problem. A second notification with details about the actual repair was announced for July 2026.
What Does the Recall Mean for the CBR 600 RR as a Model?
The Honda CBR 600 RR had only returned to the European market in 2024 after being removed from the European lineup in 2017. The supersport machine with its 599 cc inline four-cylinder engine produces 121 hp (89 kW) at 14,250 rpm. The return was celebrated by many fans of the 600 cc class.
That this particular comeback model is now facing a recall of this magnitude comes at an inopportune time for Honda. Together with the parallel recall of the CB 1000 Hornet, it creates the impression of quality problems in engine manufacturing, even though the technical causes differ between the two models. Honda Austria also confirmed that the upcoming CB 1000 GT and CB 1000 F models, which use the same engine as the Hornet range, are currently undergoing additional quality inspections. Production of these models is not scheduled to begin until the second quarter of 2026, in order to rule out potential problems early on.
In its confirmation letter dated January 5, 2026, the NHTSA had directed several follow-up requests to Honda. Among other things, the estimated percentage of actually affected motorcycles was missing, along with a chronology of all relevant events, identification of the supplier of the faulty components, and a detailed description of the repair procedure. Honda must provide this information in a supplemental Part 573 report.
