Vinales out at Silverstone: New diagnosis explains his weakness

Maverick Vinales is sitting out the British Grand Prix, with Pol Espargaro taking over the Red Bull KTM Tech3 RC16. Behind the absence is a previously undetected tear in his left shoulder that could explain months of missing strength.
  • KTM confirmed the withdrawal on 4 August, just days before the twelfth round of the season from 7 to 9 August
  • The supraspinatus has fully healed, but a small tear has shown up in the infraspinatus
  • The team is targeting the Grand Prix at Aragon from 28 to 30 August for his return

MotoGP returns from its summer break this weekend, and at Red Bull KTM Tech3 the second half of the season starts with a change in the line-up. Maverick Vinales stays in the garage at Silverstone, with test rider Pol Espargaro taking his place on the RC16. What first looked like the next chapter in a dispute between rider and manufacturer that has been running for weeks now has a medical core. For the first time since the crash in the summer of 2025, there is an explanation for why the Spaniard’s shoulder is not regaining the strength he hoped for despite surgery and lengthy rehab.

Why is Maverick Vinales missing the British GP?

Vinales is missing Silverstone because he is still recovering from his left shoulder injury and is meant to focus fully on getting fit again. KTM said the decision was taken after further talks during the summer break and a visit to the Red Bull Athlete Performance Centre.

The manufacturer describes the road to this point as a chain of setbacks. After the operation in the spring, Vinales worked closely with medical staff, with Tech3 and with KTM on his rehab programme. On track it made little difference. At the Sachsenring, the last race before the break, the Spaniard pulled in early on Sunday. In the current season he has not managed better than eleventh place, according to media reports.

What does the new shoulder diagnosis say?

The examinations during the summer break showed that the supraspinatus has fully healed, but that there is a small tear in the infraspinatus. That tear had not been picked up before and was only discovered in the week before the announcement.

Both muscles sit around the shoulder blade and belong to the rotator cuff, the muscle group that guides and stabilises the shoulder joint. The supraspinatus lifts the arm sideways, while the infraspinatus is mainly responsible for external rotation. That is exactly where Vinales’ problem lay. He described how internal rotation of his left arm had improved considerably over recent months, while the strength in external rotation never came back.

Vinales himself describes the situation matter-of-factly: „Further medical tests showed that, although my supraspinatus has fully healed, I also have a small tear in the infraspinatus that we didn’t realise until last week.“ He did not say how long the treatment will take. He announced that, as always, he would put everything into his recovery.

How did the injury happen?

The starting point goes back more than a year. Vinales crashed in July 2025 during qualifying for the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring and injured his left shoulder.

A lengthy course of treatment followed. In the spring of 2026 he had to be operated on again because a screw had worked loose or shifted. Vinales missed several races and returned to Grand Prix racing after intensive rehab, but never found his earlier form. Recently he has admitted publicly on several occasions that he simply lacks the strength on the bike.

What does Pol Espargaro bring as a replacement?

Above all, Espargaro brings familiarity with the environment. The Spaniard made his premier class debut in 2014 with Tech3 and contested 70 MotoGP races for the French squad, on top of his Moto2 title from 2013.

The role is nothing new for him either. He already stood in for the injured Vinales several times in 2025. This season he has not raced so far because a hand injury stopped him in May, which is why Jonas Folger stepped in at Le Mans at the time. Silverstone will therefore be his first Grand Prix of 2026.

He still has to adapt. Espargaro is heavily involved in developing the 850cc prototype for 2027 and has recently been on the RC16 mainly for that project. He speaks openly about needing a certain amount of time to get used to the category and the 1000cc bike again, but says he wants to be ready after a few runs. He calls the situation bittersweet: it is never nice to get on the bike under these circumstances, but at the same time racing is in his blood and he misses it.

When can Maverick Vinales return?

There is no firm date, but the team is targeting the Grand Prix of Aragon from 28 to 30 August. Team manager Nicolas Goyon said: „We wish Maverick a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the bike at the next race in Aragon.“

The announcement itself was cautious on this point. It referred explicitly only to the absence at Silverstone and contained no commitment as to when Vinales will be back on the RC16. According to media reports, the scenario of Espargaro contesting the remaining races of the year is therefore also under discussion.

What does this mean for the dispute with KTM?

The absence lands in the middle of a conflict that has been running for weeks, but it changes nothing about the contractual situation. Vinales rides for Tech3 in 2025 and 2026, and is contracted directly to KTM.

The trigger for the friction was the promotion to the factory team he had been led to expect, which never came. Until 30 June, KTM held a unilateral option on a one-year extension. When the factory team signed Alex Marquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio for 2027 instead, the matter escalated in public. At Brno, Vinales said that in the winter he had been in the factory team and now he did not even know where he stood. If his MotoGP career were to end, there would be only one party to blame, namely KTM. He later described how KTM had sent him a contract, he had signed it, and two weeks later he was told it was not valid.

In early August, Spanish media reported that KTM was looking at ways to part company with Vinales during the season, ideally without financial or public damage and without a slanging match over the remaining eleven races. Vinales rejected that on Sunday via Instagram, ruled out a move to the Superbike World Championship and said he would see out the season as contracted. Vinales skipping Silverstone does not contradict that, because he had never ruled out missing individual races for medical reasons.

Tech3 CEO Günther Steiner had previously said the team did not want to carry any legacy issues from the existing structure into the future. Luca Marini and Senna Agius are seen as the favourites for the two seats for 2027, but nothing has been confirmed so far.

How does the absence fit into the 2026 season?

Silverstone is the twelfth round of the season and the restart after the summer break, so this weekend carries plenty of weight for the second half of the year. For KTM, the absence means that one of the four RC16s is in the hands of a rider who has spent months testing almost exclusively the 850cc project for 2027.

For Vinales, the focus shifts completely. After a year of examinations, a second operation and shifting attempts at an explanation, there is now a concrete diagnosis on the table for the first time. Whether that leads to a quick return at Aragon or a longer break depends on which rehab plan the doctors ultimately choose.
