A 20-year-old motorcycle safety instructor has died in Philadelphia after a hit-and-run in which a white SUV dragged him for more than a mile. Police continue to search for the fleeing driver, while the family and an anonymous donor have offered a reward.
  • Crash occurred around 11:15 p.m. on June 24 on Kelly Drive in Philadelphia
  • Victim: Bryce Wolfe (20), student and motorcycle safety instructor from Conyngham, Pennsylvania
  • Reward of roughly $10,000 (about 8,750 euros) offered for information on the fleeing white SUV

A young man who taught others how to ride safely has died on his own motorcycle, killed by the actions of a driver who simply drove on after the crash. The case out of Philadelphia has drawn national attention in the US because it combines two things: the tragedy of an avoidable death and the ongoing search for an unknown driver who left a badly injured person behind. Bryce Wolfe was 20 years old, a student at Temple University, and worked part-time as a riding safety instructor for aspiring motorcyclists.

What happened on Kelly Drive in Philadelphia?

Wolfe was struck by a white SUV on Kelly Drive around 11:15 p.m. on the night of June 24 and was then dragged underneath the vehicle for more than a mile, roughly 1.6 kilometers. According to police, the SUV was traveling eastbound and attempted an illegal U-turn near Reservoir Drive. When the maneuver couldn’t be completed, the driver pulled back into the eastbound lane and ended up in the path of Wolfe, who was riding a red 2004 Triumph westbound.

The motorcycle collided with the SUV, and Wolfe became pinned underneath the vehicle. The driver did not stop, instead dragging the 20-year-old from Reservoir Drive to the area of Fountain Green Drive before his body came loose from the vehicle. The SUV then continued driving eastbound without rendering any aid.

How severe were the injuries, and when did Bryce Wolfe die?

Wolfe suffered life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead early Thursday morning at 4:41 a.m. He was taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center with a broken right leg and extensive abrasions to his head and face, and was initially listed in critical condition. Police say he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

His parents say they were able to review the police report. According to them, investigators believe the driver deliberately chose a route that appeared to avoid surveillance cameras.

What is the motorcycle hit-and-run investigation looking for?

Police are searching for a white SUV whose exact make and model remain unknown. Investigators believe the vehicle likely sustained damage on the driver’s side, specifically to the front wheel well, fender, or driver’s door, and may also have shattered glass on that side. Police are also asking body shops in the region to watch for a vehicle with matching damage being brought in for repairs.

A crash occurring at this location is not an isolated incident. The same stretch of Kelly Drive was the scene of a fatal crash nearly two years ago, when a rideshare passenger was killed in a three-vehicle collision. The current case adds to the ongoing debate over traffic safety and the protection of motorcyclists on public roads.

How can witnesses help?

Witnesses can contact the Philadelphia Police Crash Investigation Division at 215-685-3181, and anonymous tips can also be submitted at 215-686-TIPS. A reward of roughly $10,000 (about 8,750 euros) has been offered for information leading to the identification of the driver, reportedly funded by an anonymous donor from northeastern Pennsylvania.

Wolfe’s father made an emotional appeal to potential witnesses while describing what troubles him most: “I can only imagine what he was going through the final minutes that he was under that car and being dragged and probably yelling stop stop.” He said he can only imagine what his son went through in his final minutes, trapped under the car, being dragged, and probably yelling for the driver to stop. He said even the smallest tip could help police crack the case.
