Four days after the threats appeared on popular motorcycling routes in the Rems-Murr district, a clearer picture is emerging of how police are assessing the case. In response to a written inquiry from this publication, the Aalen Police Headquarters has broken down the state of the investigation. The answers provide considerably more detail than Monday’s press release and correct one part of the previous picture.

Why do investigators believe this is a connected crime series?

Police consider it likely that the incidents in the Rems-Murr district and in the Esslingen district are connected. The two responsible headquarters in Aalen and Reutlingen are therefore in direct contact with each other.

Police Chief Superintendent Robert Kauer of the Aalen Police Headquarters press office confirmed this exchange and stated that a connection between the cases is likely. That is more than a formality, since crime scenes spanning a district border normally fall under separate jurisdictions. When two headquarters pool their findings, it suggests investigators do not believe they are dealing with independent, unrelated incidents.

Police are keeping quiet about a possible motive. According to Kauer, no information can currently be given. The authorities have also not named any suspects so far. No comparable cases are known to the headquarters in direct connection with the current incidents.

Who is investigating, and under what charge?

A specially established investigation team based at the Schorndorf police station is handling the case. Investigators are pursuing charges of dangerous interference with road traffic under Section 315b of the German Criminal Code, and the Stuttgart public prosecutor’s office has already been informed of the matter.

The classification carries legal weight. Section 315b applies when someone compromises road traffic safety and thereby endangers the life or limb of others. The applicable sentencing range goes well beyond that of simple property damage. Specifically, authorities name the L 1147 between Schorndorf and Oberberken, the L 1151 from Schorndorf-Schlichten to the Esslingen district border, the L 1150 near Winterbach between Engelberg and Goldboden, the K 1865 in Weinstadt between Schnait and Manolzweiler, the K 1864 between Beutelsbach and Aichwald, and the L 1201 between Strümpfelbach and Schanbach. In addition, there is the L 1199 in Kernen im Remstal, running from Stetten toward Esslingen at the Stettener Sattel, the so-called gateway to the Remstal.

It was this last location that initially caused confusion. Monday’s press release had assigned a site on Stettener Straße just past Esslingen to the Esslingen district, arriving at six locations in the Rems-Murr district and eight in total. However, Kernen im Remstal actually lies within the Rems-Murr district. Together with the two separate Esslingen crime scenes, that adds up to nine locations. The reports came in to police on Saturday and Sunday.

What exactly was written on the road surface?

At the crime scenes in the Rems-Murr district, the words “BIKER STIRB” (German for biker die) appeared each time, with a different slogan at a single location. Police do not report any further text or symbols within their area of jurisdiction.

This officially confirms the main wording for the first time. Some uncertainty remains around the second slogan, since the version given by police differs from the one circulating in media reports, which cite “EIN BIKERSCHWEIN WENIGER” (one less biker pig). That wording is not confirmed, nor is the additional slogan reported elsewhere, “TOD DEN MOTORRADFAHRERN” (death to motorcyclists). It should also be noted that the information from Aalen covers only the seven crime scenes in the Rems-Murr district. The two locations in the Esslingen district fall under the Reutlingen Police Headquarters, which has not yet responded.

What was used to apply the writing?

White paint was used, which police believe was likely applied with a paint roller. Each crime scene had one instance of writing, with sizes varying and in some cases reaching up to three meters by one meter.

A paint roller would explain the wide, evenly tall lettering with rough edges. It also accounts for the speed at which the perpetrator or perpetrators must have worked. Nine locations in a short period of time mean driving time between the bends, material carried in the trunk, and several minutes spent at each site.

The responsible road maintenance depots were notified for cleanup. They arrived with a cleaning vehicle and removed the graffiti from the road surface.

What became of the suspected oil?

The suspicion has not been confirmed. According to the Aalen Police Headquarters, no investigative leads have emerged so far regarding an oily substance on the road.

Over the weekend, this had sounded different. Initial reports spoke of a greasy liquid that was said to have additionally been spread on the road. That point has now been resolved. It remained limited to paint on the asphalt. According to police, no motorcyclist has been harmed or endangered so far, and no crashes linked to the incidents are known.

The distinction matters a great deal. A deliberately placed oil trap would constitute an attack with immediate danger to life, of the kind motorcyclists in the Allgäu region are familiar with, where a rider was killed on such a trap in 2011, and where oil turned up again in two bends of the B 308 in June 2026. The case near Stuttgart fits thematically into this series of attacks on motorcyclists, but differs considerably in its execution.

What do investigators advise motorcyclists to do?

Anyone who discovers such a location should immediately call the emergency number 110 to notify police and wait at the scene for officers to arrive. The Aalen Police Headquarters explicitly states this recommendation.

The second part is the more important one. Anyone who merely calls and drives on leaves behind a report without a precise location and without witnesses. Anyone who waits can point out the exact spot, provide the time, and hand over footage from a helmet or dash camera.

Police are also looking for motorcyclists who were riding the routes mentioned over the weekend and were endangered, as well as any witnesses who observed something.
