Camouflaged Honda Fireblade: Honda’s Answer to Ducati’s Superbike Dominance

At Jerez, Honda sent the next generation of the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade onto the track for the first time, hidden under a camouflage livery. The race bike features Ducati-inspired aerodynamics and is expected to form the basis of a new homologation model.
  • Jonathan Rea, Jake Dixon and Somkiat Chantra rode the new Fireblade at Jerez on 22 and 23 October 2026
  • Side air ducts like on the Ducati Panigale V4 R, larger front winglets and a slimmer front end
  • In 2027, Honda switches to Michelin tyres and Brembo carbon brakes in World Superbike at the same time

Honda has been waiting for a World Superbike title since 2007 and for a race win since 2016. Now Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) is showing how it intends to change that. At the first test after the season finale, which Honda organised itself at Jerez, a Fireblade rolled out of the garage that has never been officially presented. A geometric camouflage pattern was meant to hide the details. That did not entirely work. Even the first photos reveal solutions that have so far been known mainly from Ducati. Test rider Jonathan Rea and the two full-time riders Jake Dixon and Somkiat Chantra rode the new machine.

What can be seen on the new Honda Fireblade?

The most striking changes concern the aerodynamics, meaning the way the fairing directs the air around the motorcycle. There are new air ducts on the sides and significantly larger multi-level winglets at the front.

The side elements protrude from the fairing below the point where the indicators sit on the road model. Openings in the lower section could channel air underneath the motorcycle. The idea behind this comes from MotoGP. On the previous Fireblade, the aero parts were more playful and less prominent.

The front also looks different. It has become slimmer, the headlights have been revised, and the ram-air intake, through which the airflow is forced into the airbox, has a slightly altered shape. The tail looks fairly wide for a race bike. Caution is needed here, however, because a camouflage pattern is designed precisely to distort proportions.

A Honda staff member says that most parts are new and only some components follow a familiar concept. There are no concrete details yet on the engine, chassis, electronics, power or weight.

Why is Honda taking its cue from Ducati?

Ducati won every race in the 2026 World Superbike Championship. Anyone who wants to catch up looks at what works on the Panigale V4 R.

Of all the rival models, the new Fireblade now appears to be the most closely modelled on the Ducati. The side air ducts in particular are reminiscent of the world champion team’s solution. But a fast motorcycle is not created by the fairing alone. Whether the technology underneath has been revised to a similar extent is not revealed by the camouflage.

How fast was the new Fireblade at the Jerez test?

On the first test day, Jonathan Rea was the fastest Honda rider and finished third overall. He was 0.927 seconds off the best time set by Sam Lowes.

Lowes lapped the circuit on the Marc VDS team’s Ducati in 1:38.790. Second was Miguel Oliveira on a BMW with 1:39.317. Behind Rea, Chantra and Dixon followed in fourth and fifth. In summery temperatures of 25 degrees, riders from BMW, Honda and Ducati as well as some Supersport teams were on track on Thursday.

Not much can be read from the times yet. On Pirelli tyres, the pole record set by Nicolò Bulega stands at 1:36.629. New tyres, new brakes and new set-ups make comparisons difficult. The main goal was to collect data for the coming season. Further tests are planned for late November and early December at Jerez and Valencia.

What changes await Honda in 2027?

In 2027, Honda has to get used to two major changes at the same time: Michelin becomes the new control tyre supplier, and Brembo carbon brakes become mandatory for all teams. Both were already in use at Jerez.

When it comes to brakes, the leap is bigger for Honda than for the competition. In 2026, Honda was the only manufacturer running Nissin brakes, while the others were at least already familiar with Brembo’s steel brakes. Riders and engineers therefore also have to adapt to a new brake supplier. Michelin replaces Pirelli and also supplies the control tyres in the World Supersport Championship.

The regulations are changing too. To balance the performance of the manufacturers and reduce Ducati’s advantage, the engine rev limit returns. The fuel consumption limit remains in place.

Honda’s long drought in World Superbike

The last world title was almost two decades ago. In 2007, James Toseland became world champion with Honda, and the most recent race win came in 2016.

High hopes rested on the return as a factory team in 2020, together with the then-new CBR1000RR-R. Even so, the Fireblade has never won a World Championship race in this generation. In 2025, Honda finished fifth in the manufacturers’ standings with 229 points, with Xavi Vierge the best rider in seventh overall.

For 2026, Honda restructured the team with new full-time riders, a new test rider and a new team manager. The season was still difficult. Dixon and Chantra rode with injuries, and the best result was Dixon’s sixth place in the second main race at Cremona. In the overall standings, the two finished 19th and 21st. Of the 22 full-time riders, only the three riders from MotoXracing Yamaha scored fewer points.

The British Superbike Championship, with its different regulations, shows that the Fireblade is fundamentally capable of winning races. There, Ryan Vickers took four wins in 2026, most recently at Brands Hatch. In the World Championship, by contrast, the same motorcycle regularly finishes outside the top ten.

What role does Jonathan Rea play in the development?

Jonathan Rea has been a test and development rider at HRC since autumn 2025 and is meant to help Honda find the right direction for the new motorcycle. The Northern Irishman has collected six world titles and 119 race wins, more than any other Superbike rider.

This year, Rea completed around 25 test days for Honda, though only some of them on the new machine. He has already won the Suzuka 8 Hours on the Fireblade, but under the regulations of the Endurance World Championship.

Rea speaks openly about Honda investing a lot of money and personnel in the project and says he can feel the ambition within the team. At the same time, he makes it clear that the motorcycle’s baseline level has to rise in order to close the gap to Ducati. According to him, it is precisely this task that appeals to him about the project.

Will the new Honda Fireblade also come to the road?

Much points to it, but Honda has not yet officially confirmed it. The race bike from Jerez is expected to form the basis of a new homologation model of the CBR1000RR-R.

The new winglets, the side panels and the revised front end are therefore likely to appear on a future road version as well. When it will come is open. There is no information on power, weight, price or market launch. Honda has already announced the current Fireblade SP in the USA as a 2027 model, so it will initially continue there.

There is speculation about an appearance at EICMA in Milan, which opens on 3 November. There is no evidence for this. Caution is advised with images of the new Fireblade without camouflage: AI-generated renderings are circulating online that claim to show what the motorcycle could look like without the camouflage livery. These are not photos of the finished machine. Among the new motorcycles for 2027, the new Fireblade therefore remains a candidate without a date for now.
