Honda’s MotoGP test program has suffered a significant setback. Aleix Espargaro, one of the Japanese factory team’s two test riders, crashed heavily during private testing at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia on Tuesday. The 36-year-old Spaniard was subsequently admitted to the CU Aurelius Hospital near Kuala Lumpur, where he spent several days. It was not until Wednesday, April 9, that Espargaro made the incident public via his social media channels.

Espargaro Reports from Hospital

In an Instagram post, the three-time MotoGP race winner described the extent of his injuries. “On Tuesday I had a very big crash during the test here in Sepang. I suffered multiple contusions and four vertebral fractures, although only just, and fortunately my spinal cord was not affected,” Espargaro wrote.

He thanked the hospital staff and announced his return journey to Spain. His wife Laura had once again traveled from Europe to pick him up in Malaysia. He described it with a touch of self-deprecation, saying he had lost count of how many times she had rushed to his aid from the other end of the world. At Barcelona’s Quirón Dexeus Hospital, doctors will determine whether surgery is necessary. Espargaro concluded his post with the words: “Sorry for the scare, I’ll be back!”

Major Setback for Honda’s Development Program

Espargaro’s absence hits Honda at the worst possible time. In the opening months of the 2026 season, the Spaniard’s focus was on developing the current RC213V, the 1000cc prototype for the ongoing season. His work concentrated on areas such as the chassis, swingarm, and aerodynamics. The declared goal before the Brno tests: finding a solution for the Honda bike’s biggest deficit — the lack of traction.

Meanwhile, Honda’s second test rider Takaaki Nakagami was already working on the successor, the RC214V, at Sepang. This motorcycle will be fielded from 2027 with an 850cc engine and Pirelli tires under the new technical regulations. Honda had first brought the 850cc prototype to the track in December 2025. After the Czech Grand Prix, Espargaro was supposed to take the lead role in developing the 2027 bike.

With the Spaniard sidelined, Nakagami must now handle both tasks simultaneously: further development of the RC213V for 2026 and work on the new 850cc prototype for 2027. A considerable additional burden for the Japanese rider, who had previously been focused exclusively on the future project.

Potential Wildcard Appearance at Jerez Off the Table

Although no wildcard entry had been officially announced, the upcoming Spanish GP at Jerez on April 24-26 would have presented an opportunity for Espargaro’s first race outing of the 2026 season. This would have been all the more worthwhile given that the first of four in-season tests takes place on the Monday after the Grand Prix. The remaining official test dates are scheduled after the Catalan GP in Barcelona on May 18, after the Czech GP in Brno on June 22, and after the Austrian GP at Spielberg on September 21. While the first two tests will still be conducted with the current 1000cc machines and Michelin tires, the new 2027 bikes with Pirelli rubber will be available for regular riders for the first time at Brno and Spielberg.

Honda can at least rely on its four regular riders for the upcoming tests, including Joan Mir and Luca Marini, who can evaluate new parts at the Jerez test. Development work is not grinding to a complete halt, but it loses an important driving force with Espargaro’s experience and expertise.

Comparison with His Brother Pol’s Injury

Espargaro’s injury is reminiscent of a similar incident involving his brother Pol Espargaro, who also sustained vertebral fractures at the 2023 season opener in Portimão. Pol had crashed on a hard front tire and was thrown through the gravel trap into the barrier. He needed three months until the Assen race to return to the motorcycle, and later admitted that even that timing had been too soon. A similar recovery period is conceivable for Aleix Espargaro, though the examinations in Barcelona must first be awaited.

Details about the exact circumstances of the crash at Sepang remain unknown. Neither the corner involved nor details about the safety installations at the crash site have been communicated.

Espargaro Is Not the First HRC Rider Injured at Sepang in 2026

Earlier this year in January, Somkiat Chantra, Honda’s rider in the Superbike World Championship, had broken both arms during testing at the Sepang International Circuit. Chantra subsequently missed the WorldSBK season opener at Phillip Island in February. Espargaro is thus the second HRC rider to be seriously injured at the Malaysian circuit this season.

Racing Break Due to Postponed Qatar GP

MotoGP is currently in a three-week break between the US Grand Prix at the end of March and the Spanish GP at Jerez at the end of April. The Qatar Grand Prix was originally scheduled for this weekend but was postponed to a later date due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. For test riders, however, the break offers no respite. On the contrary: the factories use the race-free time intensively for their development programs.

Espargaro ended his active MotoGP career at the end of 2024 and joined Honda as a test rider to drive development forward. Last year, he had still combined his testing duties with a professional cycling career at Team Lidl-Trek. For 2026, however, he decided to give up competitive cycling to focus entirely on his role at Honda.

When Espargaro will be able to get back on a MotoGP bike remains completely unclear. The decision on a potential surgery in Barcelona is likely to be the next important step on the road to recovery.
