Dangerous brake pads from AliExpress: recall due to asbestos contamination

The Federation of European Motorcyclists Associations (FEMA), in cooperation with national associations, has launched a recall for several brake pads and linings sold through the online marketplace AliExpress. Reason for the recall: The affected products contain asbestos, a substance that is proven to be carcinogenic and has been banned in the EU since 1999.

Affected manufacturers and models

The affected brake pads are mainly products from the manufacturer Tanaki, which were designed for large-volume scooters. Specifically, the following Piaggio models are affected:

  • X8 125 and X8 200 (built between 2004 and 2005)
  • X9 Evolution (built between 2005 and 2007)
  • X9 500cc (built between 2003 and 2006)
  • X9 500 ie (built in 2007)

In addition, brake shoes listed as “Brake Shoes” and manufactured by Zhangxingyue are also affected. These are intended for the following Piaggio models:

  • Fly
  • Liberty S 50
  • Free 100
  • Hexagon LX4
  • Skipper LX
  • Typhoon
  • X8 Street 125cc and 150cc

The affected items are listed under AliExpress product numbers 1005005351305154 and 12000032712646357.

Other affected products

Brake shoes from Chinese manufacturer XHMT are also included in the recall. These are also available on AliExpress, but no specific motorcycle models have been named. All of the products mentioned are manufactured in China and, according to FEMA, violate the REACH Regulation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals). This EU regulation serves to protect people and the environment from harmful chemicals.

Health risks posed by asbestos

Asbestos was previously often used in brake pads, clutches, and other friction materials because it is very heat-resistant and durable. However, since it was banned, it has become known that even small amounts of inhaled asbestos dust can lead to serious respiratory diseases and cancer. Particularly problematic is that there is no safe dose. Even short-term contact with asbestos particles can have long-term health consequences.

Recommendations for affected users

FEMA strongly warns against continuing to use or disposing of the affected components yourself. Owners of such products should contact an authorized motorcycle repair shop and under no circumstances attempt to remove or dispose of the parts themselves. Only proper disposal can prevent the release of hazardous substances.
