Focus on easy handling and strong performance
The development of the BMW Concept F 450 GS focused on the goal of creating a motorcycle with optimum handling and strong performance both on the road and off-road. “When developing the new BMW Concept F 450 GS, it was particularly important to us to achieve the best handling for this segment and to combine it with strong performance and optimum accessibility. Riding fun on and off-road is a top priority for this A2 BMW GS,” explains Sepp Mächler, Product Manager at BMW Motorrad.
Design with typical GS DNA
Alexander Buckan, Head of BMW Motorrad Design, emphasizes the unmistakable design of the Concept F 450 GS: “The BMW Concept F 450 GS carries the characteristic DNA of the GS family.” The blue-white-red color scheme and the racing blue metallic base color underline the sporty, dynamic character of the machine, which is based on the look of the BMW R 1300 GS. The compact design and typical GS features give the Concept F 450 GS an authentic off-road aesthetic.
Innovative two-cylinder engine for A2 class
The Concept F 450 GS is powered by a completely newly developed two-cylinder in-line engine, which is tailored to the requirements of the A2 driving license class. With an output of 48 hp (35 kW), the engine exploits the upper limit of the A2 class and offers high torque even at low engine speeds, which should ensure dynamic acceleration. A unique ignition offset gives the engine a distinctive characteristic that has been optimized for agile handling.
During development, BMW relies on lightweight materials such as magnesium to minimize the weight of the machine and at the same time achieve a good displacement/performance ratio.
High-quality chassis components for versatile use
The BMW Concept F 450 GS is equipped with high-quality chassis components designed for both off-road capability and precise handling on the road. According to Marc Weber, the project’s lead engineer, the machine features a fully adjustable upside-down fork and a shock absorber with travel-dependent damping, inspired by technologies from rally and enduro sports. Thanks to targeted lightweight construction, the weight of the machine is close to the A2 minimum limit of 175 kg, which corresponds to approximately 385 pounds, and promises high maneuverability and agility.
Modern equipment for safety and connectivity
In terms of safety and comfort, the Concept F 450 GS is based on the BMW R 1300 GS. The equipment features include BMW Motorrad ABS Pro, which also provides support when leaning, powerful brakes and individually configurable riding modes. A 6.5-inch TFT display and BMW Connectivity enable the motorcycle to be connected to the smartphone and other accessories, thus ensuring comprehensive networking.
Production model planned for 2025
BMW Motorrad plans to launch the production model in the style of the BMW Concept F 450 GS in 2025. According to Johann Simon, Vehicle Project Manager for the Concept F 450 GS, the production model will largely adopt the sporty off-road capabilities of the concept machine. However, adjustments to the seat height should ensure easier handling and better accessibility. In addition to the standard 19-inch cross-spoke wheels at the front and 17-inch wheels at the rear, cast aluminum wheels could also be offered as an option for the production version.
The BMW Concept F 450 GS thus presents itself as a compact, versatile enduro that has been specially developed for riders in the A2 class and is intended to impress with a combination of performance, low weight and modern technologies.
