- FX ordered Legends as a limited series for FX and Hulu on August 19, 2026
- Eight cast members from the original series are confirmed, including Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman, and Katey Sagal
- Series creator Kurt Sutter is not involved but has publicly given the project his blessing
Sons of Anarchy ran from 2008 to 2014 over seven seasons on FX and told the story of the fictional motorcycle club SAMCRO in Charming, California. At its center was Jax Teller, played by Charlie Hunnam, who first served as vice president and later as president of the club. Now that very ensemble is returning, though under conditions that have nothing to do with the familiar storyline.
What Is Legends About?
Legends tells the story of the Sons of Anarchy cast reuniting at a fan convention after more than a decade. According to the official description from FX, the line between life and fiction blurs there, and the fractured group faces a real threat more dangerous than anything the characters ever experienced on the show.
The key difference from a classic spinoff lies in the casting logic. The actors do not return as their old roles but play fictionalized versions of themselves. FX describes the result as a meta-thriller. This also sidesteps a practical problem: a large portion of the main characters did not survive the end of Sons of Anarchy, making a direct continuation nearly impossible.
Who Stars in Legends?
Eight cast members from the original series are confirmed. Alongside Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi will appear on camera. In Sons of Anarchy, they portrayed Clay Morrow, Gemma Teller Morrow, Tara Knowles, Bobby Munson, Chibs, Tig, and Juice.
FX has announced additional casting news for a later date. The fact that the group can be brought together at all is no coincidence. Many of the actors have stayed in close contact after the series ended and regularly meet at fan conventions — precisely the setting that now serves as the starting point for the story.

Who Is Behind the Production?
Charlie Hunnam conceived Legends, writes the screenplay, plays the lead role, and serves as executive producer. He developed the project together with writer and producer Jonathan Groff, who according to industry media also works as showrunner. This role does not appear in the official FX announcement, however, where both are listed only as developers and executive producers.
Additional executive producers include Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn. The limited series is produced by FX Productions and 20th Television. It will air and stream on FX and Hulu.
The project is not a spontaneous idea. According to information from the production’s circle, Hunnam has been working with FX on it for at least three years, with Groff joining later. For Hunnam, the order marks a return to the network where he became famous with Sons of Anarchy. Most recently, he played serial killer Ed Gein in Monster: The Ed Gein Story and was nominated for an Emmy, a Golden Globe, an Actor Award, and a Critics Choice Award. He is simultaneously filming the BBC adaptation of John le Carré’s novel Legacy of Spies.
Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment, described the concept in the announcement as “a love letter to the series,” combined with a playful meta twist.
Why Is Kurt Sutter Not Involved?
Kurt Sutter, who created Sons of Anarchy, is not involved in Legends. His name is not mentioned at all in the FX press release. Sutter then spoke up himself on Instagram, making clear that he considers this appropriate: “I’m not involved with Legends at all, nor should I be.”
He explained that the new series has nothing to do with the characters he created or their mythology. It is about the series itself and its legacy, and thousands of people are responsible for that legacy. According to his own account, Hunnam approached him early and asked for his blessing while still pitching the project to the network. Sutter says he gave that blessing unconditionally, points to his wife Katey Sagal as part of the cast, and speaks of having already glimpsed a script that convinced him.
This approval is noteworthy because Sutter’s relationship with the network has not always been smooth. In October 2019, he was fired from the spinoff Mayans M.C. after an internal investigation looked into complaints from cast and crew. At the time, he had harsh words for his superiors. Today, he speaks of appreciation for FX chief John Landgraf and the network.

When Does Legends Premiere?
A premiere date has not yet been set. FX has announced neither a start date for filming nor a release date, and no director has been named so far.
What the Series Means for the Sons of Anarchy Universe
Legends is the second spinoff in the motorcycle series’ orbit, following Mayans M.C. Mayans M.C. launched in 2018 and was developed by Sutter together with Elgin James. Other plans remained in the drawer, including the prequel series First Nine and a continuation centered on Jax Teller’s sons Abel and Thomas.
Commercially, the original series was a success for FX. In its third season, Sons of Anarchy averaged 4.9 million viewers per week. That makes it one of the defining titles with which the network established itself in the field of original drama series. For motorcycle culture on television, the series was a reference point regardless, as it conveyed the image of the outlaw motorcycle club to a mass audience for years. Legends connects to that legacy but shifts the focus from the club world to the fan community and the people who once brought that world to life.
