Sales halted due to suspected material defect in evaporation system
BMW Motorrad recently caused a stir by announcing a temporary sales halt for certain models in North America. This unexpected move affects both new and used models with internal combustion engines currently in dealer inventory.
What exactly is behind it?
Following a recent quality analysis, BMW Motorrad is investigating the materials used in a component of its motorcycle evaporative system. There are concerns that they may not meet material specifications. The evaporative system – often referred to simply as “Evap” – is designed to capture unburned vapors and direct them either back to the engine or to the exhaust catalytic converter to burn them more completely, rather than releasing them into the atmosphere.

For BMW owners in North America, however, there is reassuring news: the problem is not safety-related. This means that those who already own a BMW motorcycle can continue to ride it as usual. This information was confirmed by both Hermy’s BMW in Pennsylvania and Missouri’s Gateway BMW, both of which issued public statements emphasizing the safety of the motorcycles.
