- Ducati’s first competition supermoto, derived from the motocross machine Desmo450 MX
- A pure competition model with no road homologation, fitted with slick tires as standard
- Full reveal with technical specifications planned for September, sales expected to start in October
For the brand’s 100th anniversary, the Misano World Circuit became the big stage. Amid anniversary models, legends and current factory riders, Ducati unveiled a motorcycle on Saturday, July 4th, that had so far been missing from the historic brand’s lineup: a supermoto built purely for racing. The Desmo450 SM initially stood covered on the main stage before being revealed as a preview. This grows Ducati’s still-young Desmo lineup to five models, and marks the brand’s first presence across all three off-road disciplines: motocross, enduro and supermoto.

What is the Ducati Desmo450 SM?
The Desmo450 SM is Ducati’s first competition supermoto, a pure racing motorcycle with no road homologation, built on the motocross machine Desmo450 MX. At its Misano premiere it officially still carried the designation “Preview”, meaning homologation is not yet complete and the technical data so far remains semi-official.
Ducati has expanded its Desmo lineup rapidly. Following the customer-spec Desmo450 MX came the Desmo450 MX Factory, the smaller Desmo250 MX, and the Desmo450 EDS, the first enduro on the same technical base. The Desmo450 SM is now the fifth model in this family. Alongside the supermoto, Ducati also put the limited Superleggera V4 Centenario and the Collezione 100, featuring ten numbered special models, in the spotlight at the event.
What technology powers the Desmo450 SM?
The base is the Desmo450 MX, but according to Ducati the supermoto was reworked on nearly every component. Giulio Fabbri, responsible for product communication at Ducati, made it clear on stage: “This is not the Desmo450 MX with new wheels.” He said the team had worked on every part of the motorcycle — wheels, brakes, suspension, frame, engine and, in part, the bodywork as well.

At its core is a liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with 449.6 cubic centimeters of displacement and desmodromic valve control, the positively-actuated valve technology that Ducati has championed for decades and that gives the Desmo name its meaning. In the motocross version, this engine produces around 63.5 hp (46.7 kW) and 53.5 Nm (39.5 lb-ft) at 7,500 rpm, with a redline of 11,900 rpm. These figures serve as a reference point, since the characteristics are likely to be adapted for tarmac use, and Ducati explicitly points to reworked engine components. On the chassis side, the supermoto uses a long-travel Showa suspension setup and an aluminum bridge frame. It’s paired with Takasago Excel spoked wheels in road sizes, a single front disc brake with a Galfer wave rotor, a raised exhaust, hand guards, and deliberately minimalist bodywork. For the presentation, the machine was fitted with Metzeler Racetec SM slick tires. The engine, incidentally, was not started at the reveal — the first sounds are likely to be heard only at the full unveiling in September.
Is the Ducati Desmo450 SM road-legal?
No, the Desmo450 SM is a pure competition model and is not approved for road use. This clearly sets it apart from the established Hypermotard-series supermotos, which are available as both single-cylinder and V2 road-legal machines. One special detail: the Desmo450 SM is said to be the only series-produced Ducati delivered with slick tires as standard. That doesn’t rule out a road-legal derivative down the line, since Ducati has already shown with the Hypermotard 698 Mono that a single-cylinder supermoto can work with homologation too.

Who helped develop the Desmo450 SM?
Marc-Reiner Schmidt, a four-time supermoto world champion, was involved in the development and has already raced the machine in competition. According to Ducati, the German rider already scored early wins with the prototype. This approach fits the brand’s philosophy of sharpening road- and race-oriented products through motorsport. Ducati describes the Desmo450 SM as a race-ready machine that can go straight to the track, and hints that it could become the lightest motorcycle in its class.
When is the Ducati Desmo450 SM coming?
The full presentation of the production version, with all technical data, is scheduled for September 2026. A sales launch is currently planned for October. Ducati will only reveal pricing, performance figures and availability details at that official presentation — until then, many details of the racing supermoto remain open.
