Ducati Monster wins Red Dot Award 2026: what mattered to the jury

The fifth generation of the Ducati Monster has been honoured with the Red Dot Design Award in the Product Design 2026 category. The jury is recognising a motorcycle that has only been in dealerships for a few months.
  • Award: Red Dot Design Award – Product Design 2026
  • Engine: 890 cc V2 with 111 hp (81.6 kW) and 91.1 Nm
  • Price in Germany: from 12,890 euros (around 15,080 US dollars)

On 6 August 2026 Ducati announced that the new Monster has received the Red Dot Design Award in the Product Design category. The prize has been awarded since 1955 and is decided by an independent jury of international experts. According to the organisers, the criteria are design, innovation, function and aesthetics. The timing is notable: the fifth Monster generation was unveiled in 2025 and only reached dealerships this year.

Why did the Ducati Monster win the Red Dot Award 2026?

According to the manufacturer, the decisive factor was the way the new model develops its familiar design language further without abandoning it. The press release states: „It was precisely this stylistic evolution, which consistently preserves the identity of the model, that convinced the jury of the Red Dot Design Award.“

Ducati specifically names three features that have belonged to the Monster since 1992 and that also shape the current generation: the headlight framed by the flared shoulders of the bison-shaped tank, the one-piece seat and the short, light tail. The manufacturer sums up the basic principle of the range with a phrase that has applied since the first model: „everything you need, nothing more“.

The fact that the Monster could be judged as an independent design at all is down to the fifth generation not being a facelift. Ducati rebuilt the motorcycle completely, with a new engine, a new chassis and new electronics.

What is inside the new Monster technically?

At its centre sits a liquid-cooled 90-degree twin with 890 cc of displacement, four valves per cylinder and variable valve timing. It produces 111 hp (81.6 kW) at 9,000 rpm and delivers 91.1 Nm (around 67 lb-ft) at 7,250 rpm.

The variable valve timing, known at Ducati as IVT, adjusts the timing of the intake valves depending on engine speed. The aim is the smoothest possible torque curve without sacrificing peak power. In practice this is most noticeable in the mid-range, where naked bikes spend most of their time in everyday use.

The engine acts as a stressed member in an aluminium monocoque, while a twin-sided aluminium swingarm works at the rear. At the front there is a Showa upside-down fork with 43 mm stanchions, at the rear a Showa shock with adjustable spring preload. Braking is handled by two 320 mm discs with radially mounted Brembo M4.32 monobloc calipers at the front and a 245 mm disc at the rear. Bosch cornering ABS is standard equipment, as are traction control, wheelie control and engine brake control.

Ready to ride without fuel, the motorcycle weighs 175 kg (around 386 lbs). Seat height is 815 mm as standard and can be lowered to 795 mm with accessories, or to 775 mm with an additional lowering kit. The service interval stands out: the valve clearance check is not due until 45,000 km. Fuel consumption is quoted at 5.2 l/100 km, and the emissions standard is Euro 5+. Ducati also lists the Monster among the models available as a 35 kW version for the A2 licence category.

Where does the Monster fit into Ducati’s 2026 range?

The Monster is the least powerful and at the same time the lightest Ducati using the 890 V2. The manufacturer uses the same engine in other model ranges of the same model year, but with different tuning.

In the Streetfighter V2 and the Panigale V2, Ducati quotes 120 hp and 93.3 Nm, while the Multistrada V2 delivers 115.6 hp and 92.1 Nm. At 175 kg, the Monster is the lightest of these models. That set-up matches the character of the range, which has always aimed at agility and accessibility rather than headline figures.

What does the Ducati Monster cost?

In Germany the Monster starts at 12,890 euros (around 15,080 US dollars) in Ducati Red. Iceberg White costs from 13,090 euros (around 15,320 US dollars), the Sport Livery from 13,390 euros (around 15,670 US dollars).

Anyone wanting the Monster+ with cockpit fairing and passenger seat cover pays from 13,290 euros (around 15,550 US dollars) in red, from 13,490 euros (around 15,780 US dollars) in white and from 13,790 euros (around 16,130 US dollars) in the Sport Livery. For comparison: in the United Kingdom the price list for the base model starts at 11,995 pounds (around 13,800 euros / 16,200 US dollars).

The Sport Livery was only added in April, and three colour options have been available since then. Standard equipment includes the Ducati Quick Shift Up/Down 2.0 quickshifter, a 5-inch TFT display and full LED lighting.

Which other motorcycles received a Red Dot in 2026?

Alongside Ducati, Honda and Suzuki were also successful in the same category in 2026. Honda received the award for the electric WN7, which had previously been honoured with the iF Design Award. Suzuki was recognised for the GSX-8T and the GSX-8TT.

For Ducati itself the prize is not a first. The 1199 Panigale (2013), the XDiavel S (2016), the Diavel 1260 (2019), the Diavel V4 (2024) and most recently the Panigale V4 (2025) have all been Red Dot winners.
