Contract dispute at Aprilia: Jorge Martin contract-free for 2026, according to manager

The contractual relationship between Jorge Martin and manufacturer Aprilia is currently causing discussion in the MotoGP scene. As his manager Albert Valera publicly stated, Martin has made use of a contractually agreed exit clause and is therefore officially contract-free for the 2026 season. While Martin is not at the Tourist Trophy in Assen this weekend, he says he is currently training on a road bike before returning to the motorcycle. Manager Valera, on the other hand, is in Assen and gave several interviews on Saturday to clarify the current status of the contract situation.

Manager Valera emphasizes: Martin is free for 2026

In an interview with Dorna Sports, Albert Valera underscored his protégé’s position: “Well, we can say that Jorge is contract-free for the coming year, i.e., for 2026. For us, that is quite clear. He has invoked the clause provided for in the contract, and we are simply following what is in the contract.” Valera thus confirms that Martin will be able to sign with any team from 2026 onwards, provided that a suitable offer is made.

Valera went on to explain that the original plan was to extend the deadline for invoking the exit clause in good faith. “We felt that both Aprilia and Jorge deserved a second chance – but this was denied.” According to the manager, the only option left was to activate the clause within the existing deadline. It is now desirable for Martin to gain clarity about his future soon so that he can concentrate on the current season with Aprilia.

Aprilia still considers contract valid

The Aprilia team management reacted cautiously to Valera’s statements. An official statement merely confirmed that the company’s position published on May 22 remained unchanged. According to this statement, Aprilia continues to consider the two-year contract with Jorge Martin to be fully valid and binding until the end of 2026. The team also pointed out that offers from other teams to contractually bound riders are legally inadmissible. Representatives of the manufacturer did not wish to comment further.

Speculation about a move to Honda

In recent weeks, there has been repeated speculation that Jorge Martin could move to Honda for the 2026 season. Honda team manager Alberto Puig emphasized his interest in the Spaniard, but made it clear: “We would never try to poach a rider who has a current contract.” Valera is currently cautious about the rumors: “At this point in time, we cannot talk about offers from third parties because it may not yet be the right moment to examine and evaluate other options.” Nevertheless, he emphasized that, following the withdrawal clause, talks with other manufacturers are possible in principle and that Honda is definitely an option for 2026.

Conclusion: Unclear starting position for 2026

While Jorge Martin’s camp assumes he is a free agent, Aprilia is sticking to the existing contract. The situation therefore remains tense and open. Whatever decision is ultimately made is likely to have a significant impact on the rider market for the coming season.
