Martín Beats Bezzecchi at Le Mans: Aprilia’s Historic 1-2-3 and What It Means for the Championship

Jorge Martín wins the 2026 French GP at Le Mans after a comeback charge from seventh place, taking his first Grand Prix victory on the Aprilia RS-GP. Ai Ogura celebrates as only the third Japanese rider to reach a MotoGP podium. It is the first Aprilia 1-2-3 in premier class history.
  • Martín takes the lead three laps from the end and wins by 0.477 seconds over Bezzecchi
  • Francesco Bagnaia crashes out of second position on lap 16
  • Bezzecchi’s championship lead shrinks to just one single point

For more than 500 days, Jorge Martín had been waiting for a Sunday victory in MotoGP. Since his triumph in Mandalika, Indonesia, at the end of 2024, the 2024 World Champion had gone without a Grand Prix win, plagued by injuries, a difficult start to his factory Aprilia chapter, and a string of disappointing Sundays. At Le Mans, during the fifth round of the 2026 season, the Spaniard ended that drought and in doing so not only celebrated his own comeback but gave Aprilia a day unlike any other in the history of the manufacturer from Noale.

How Did the Start of the 2026 French GP Unfold?

Marco Bezzecchi made perfect use of his second grid position and took the lead before the Dunlop chicane. Pedro Acosta, who had started from fourth place (promoted by the absence of Marc Márquez), slotted in behind the championship leader in second position, ahead of the fast-starting Fabio Quartararo on the factory Yamaha. Francesco Bagnaia, who had gone into the race as pole-sitter, dropped back to fifth in the opening laps and found himself behind Quartararo and Fabio di Giannantonio. Martín himself was stuck in the midfield in seventh position during the early laps and initially found no way forward.

Marc Márquez was absent from the grid. The reigning World Champion had suffered a fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his right foot during a sprint race highside at Turn 13 on Saturday. Ducati confirmed that Márquez would miss not only the Grand Prix at Le Mans but also the Catalan GP in Barcelona the following week. A previously planned shoulder operation to remove a screw pressing on the radial nerve in his right shoulder was brought forward. Maverick Viñales was also still absent due to injury and was replaced at Tech3 KTM by Jonas Folger, who was breathing Grand Prix air for the first time since 2023.

When Did Bagnaia Lose Touch With the Leading Group?

Bagnaia fought his way forward from lap five onwards, first overtaking Quartararo at Turn 1 before also passing Acosta at the Dunlop chicane at the start of lap seven to move into second position. The gap to Bezzecchi at that point was around 0.8 seconds, and the Ducati rider managed to reduce it to about half a second over the following laps. However, Bagnaia could get no closer. Bezzecchi kept enough in reserve to fend off the Italian’s attacks.

Then came the decisive moment for Ducati on lap 16: Under increasing pressure from Acosta, Bagnaia lost control of his GP26 at the Dunlop chicane, Turn 3, and went down. It was already his fourth Sunday retirement in the first five Grands Prix of the 2026 season, a series that stands in stark contrast to his sprint results. Ducati’s constructors’ championship hopes suffered yet another setback. Bagnaia was unhurt in the crash but sits on just 43 points in ninth in the championship, already 85 points behind the leader.

How Did Martín Pull Off His Comeback Victory?

The key to Martín’s victory was his patience. While Bezzecchi and Bagnaia battled at the front, the Aprilia rider methodically worked his way through the field in the first half of the race. On lap nine he overtook di Giannantonio after a brief duel across several corners and moved into fourth position, though already 2.5 seconds behind the leader. Bagnaia’s crash on lap 16 promoted Martín to third, and two laps later he passed Acosta at Turn 3 to move into the pursuit position behind his teammate.

When Martín took second place, the gap to Bezzecchi was still 1.6 seconds. What followed was a masterclass in tire management and race pacing. In the second half of the race, Martín continuously increased his pace and posted lap times that were up to half a second faster than those of his teammate at the front. Particularly in sector three, which encompasses the fast corners before the start-finish line, the Spaniard took up to three tenths out of his rival on individual laps.

By the start of lap 21, Bezzecchi’s lead had melted to one second. On lap 22, it was down to five tenths. When Martín launched his decisive attack at the Dunlop chicane on lap 25 of 27, Bezzecchi was powerless. Martín passed his teammate cleanly and immediately pulled away by 0.6 seconds. He controlled the race comfortably over the final two laps and crossed the finish line with a 0.477-second advantage.

After the race, the Spaniard was visibly emotional. “Thank you. It’s unbelievable,” Martín said on the podium. “I’m so, so, so, so grateful to all the fans. But for sure, I have to remember about my family, my team, and everybody, my girlfriend, my dog, all the people that were with me all this tough time. I don’t have words. So thank you.”

It was a victory made all the more remarkable considering that exactly one year ago at this very venue, Martín had wanted to terminate his Aprilia contract early. At that time, his manager Albert Valera had traveled to Le Mans to negotiate the contract termination. The fact that Martín celebrated his first Grand Prix victory on the RS-GP at this very track rounds off one of the most remarkable stories in recent MotoGP history.

What Does Ogura’s Podium Mean for MotoGP?

Ai Ogura wrote a piece of motorsport history at Le Mans. The 25-year-old Japanese rider from the Trackhouse Aprilia team rode from eighth on the grid to mount a patient yet impressive comeback charge, securing third place. It is Ogura’s first podium in the MotoGP class and also the first dry-race podium for a Japanese rider in the premier class since Katsuyuki Nakasuga in Valencia 2012. In dry conditions, the last regular podium by a Japanese rider in the premier class was achieved by Makoto Tamada in 2006.

Ogura started cautiously and even lost a position to Joan Mir in the opening laps when he went wide at the penultimate corner while attempting to overtake Quartararo. But from mid-race onwards, the Japanese rider steadily increased his pace. He worked his way past Quartararo, then overtook di Giannantonio, and was the fastest man on track in the closing laps. On lap 23 he passed Acosta with a spectacular move, thereby completing the first ever Aprilia 1-2-3 in MotoGP history.

Ogura is the first rider to make it from the Asian Talent Cup through the Road to MotoGP program onto a MotoGP podium. He climbed to fifth in the championship standings with 67 points following the result. However, his departure from Trackhouse at the end of the season has already been confirmed, and the question of his future team remains open.

How Did the Race Go for Ducati and the Other Manufacturers?

Ducati had a difficult Sunday. In addition to Bagnaia’s retirement on lap 16, Alex Márquez also crashed out early in the race. The Gresini rider, who had won the preceding Spanish GP at Jerez, left without points. Brad Binder on the factory KTM, Joan Mir on the Honda, and Diogo Moreira on the LCR Honda also retired through crashes. The best Ducati finisher was Fabio di Giannantonio on the VR46 bike, who squeezed past Pedro Acosta at the very last corner of the final lap to secure fourth place. The overtaking move at Turn 13 generated some discussion but earned di Giannantonio third place in the overall championship standings, one point ahead of Acosta.

Fabio Quartararo delivered another encouraging result on the factory Yamaha. The Frenchman started from fifth, stayed with the leading group for a long time, and finished the race in sixth, his best result of the 2026 season. The Yamaha YZR-M1 showed improved performance at the slow, braking-heavy Le Mans circuit, even though the pace in the fast sections still falls short of the absolute top.

Enea Bastianini finished seventh on the Tech3 KTM, Raúl Fernandez took eighth for Trackhouse Aprilia, Fermín Aldeguer on the Gresini Ducati (GP25) came ninth, and Luca Marini on the factory Honda rounded out the top ten. Johann Zarco, who had set the fastest time of the weekend on Friday, was unable to replicate that form in the race and finished eleventh. Jack Miller scored his first point of the 2026 season in 15th on the Pramac Yamaha. Jonas Folger finished his comeback race for Tech3 in 16th.

What Does Le Mans Mean for the 2026 Championship Battle?

The 2026 MotoGP season has its closest title fight in years after five of 22 races. Through his double victory over the weekend (sprint on Saturday, Grand Prix on Sunday), Martín has closed the gap to his teammate Bezzecchi to just a single point: 128 to 127 points. It is the first time this season that the margin between the two factory Aprilia riders has been this small.

For Bezzecchi, the situation is not dramatic despite losing the lead. The Italian has finished in the top two at all five Grands Prix of the season and is consistently scoring points at the highest level. The fact that he led for 24 laps at Le Mans and was only overtaken three laps from the end shows that he does not lack speed. At the same time, however, he must come to terms with the realization that Martín has a clear pace advantage in the closing laps over race distance.

The competition from Ducati has meanwhile found itself in a difficult position. Marc Márquez sits on 57 points, already 71 behind the leader, and will fall further back due to his enforced absence from two races. Bagnaia is on 43 points in ninth and has not seen the checkered flag in a championship-relevant position on any race Sunday this season. Ducati does have a solid points scorer in di Giannantonio (84 points, third in the championship), but the 44-point deficit to the lead after five races is already considerable.

Aprilia clearly dominates the constructors’ championship and has nearly doubled the points tally of its closest rival according to season statistics. Four Aprilia riders sit in the top six of the riders’ championship. The factory team with Martín and Bezzecchi and the Trackhouse satellite team with Ogura and Fernandez form a united front that no other manufacturer can match.

The next stop is the Gran Premi de Catalunya in Barcelona next weekend, where the title fight between the Aprilia teammates enters its next chapter. Marc Márquez will also be absent there.
