BMW M 1300 GS spotted: 21-inch wheel turns the GS into a sports machine

At BMW, the letter M has stood for motorsport since the 1980s. For a long time the badge was reserved for the cars; today three motorcycles carry it as well: the M 1000 RR from 36,300 euros, the M 1000 R from 23,290 euros and the M 1000 XR from 26,590 euros. That a fourth model would follow became apparent early on. Back in 2019, BMW secured the naming rights to the designation M 1300 GS. In spring 2022, the names R 1300 GS, R 1400 GS and M 1300 GS additionally appeared prematurely on a BMW service page and disappeared again shortly afterwards. There was never an official confirmation. Now new photographs deliver the clearest indication yet that development is entering the home straight.

What do the new spy shots of the BMW M 1300 GS show?

The photos show an almost fully developed prototype being transported under a tarpaulin. Photographer Bernhard M. Höhne did not manage to catch any running test bikes, meaning camouflaged pre-production machines.

Even so, a fair amount can be read from them. One important clue is the level of maturity: in early development stages, prototypes from every manufacturer usually lack details such as lettering. Here, exactly those details are present. The M logo sits on the wheel, and the M colours that have been established for years appear on the left-hand valve cover. So it should not be all that long until an unveiling.

The scene was captured at the end of July 2026, and it came as a double act. Right next to the M 1300 GS stood a second covered motorcycle, which according to media reports is the revised R 1300 GS. Comparing the two machines is what really makes the differences visible.

Why does the M 1300 GS get a 21-inch front wheel?

The larger front wheel is the clearest sign that the M 1300 GS is meant to be far more capable off-road than any other boxer GS. A 21-inch wheel is used at the front and an 18-inch item at the rear, both with spokes.

This combination is familiar from the air- and oil-cooled R 12 G/S. It helps a motorcycle roll over roots, rocks and deep ruts more easily, but costs a little agility on tarmac. Fittingly, the prototype on show wore knobbly Metzeler Karoo tyres. Hidden beneath the cover are longer suspension travel plus a sturdier, reworked support for the shaft-drive swingarm, meaning the assembly that takes the drive to the rear wheel.

That makes the concept fundamentally different from the HP version of the previous R 1250 GS. That bike was essentially a visually upgraded equipment variant. With the M 1300 GS, by contrast, everything points to a thorough rebuild. Also clearly visible are the stronger M brakes with their characteristic blue calipers.

How much power does the M 1300 GS boxer engine make?

Little appears to change on the drivetrain side. The 1300 cc liquid-cooled boxer of the R 1300 GS produces 145 hp (107 kW) at 7,750 rpm and delivers 149 Nm (110 lb-ft) at 6,500 rpm.

The engineers could probably squeeze out a few more horsepower, although that would not be strictly necessary. The decisive lever lies elsewhere: the M 1300 GS is set to be noticeably lighter than the base model. Less mass improves the power-to-weight ratio without any changes to the engine. That is precisely what benefits a motorcycle most in demanding terrain.

Titanium, tank and radar: where BMW can save weight

BMW is apparently attacking the weight from several angles. Part of it is expected to come from design measures, another part from premium materials. Titanium is said to be used in the exhaust system, among other places.

Unlike the R 1300 GS Adventure, the M version is likely to use the standard tank of the regular R 1300 GS. That not only saves weight, it also distributes the remaining mass more favourably. How deep the visual changes go remains open. A revised seat unit is considered certain, a new subframe highly likely. Dropping the radar units at the front and rear would not be surprising either, because that step would also save weight. On the current models, the radar technology controls the adaptive cruise control and the blind-spot warning, but it offers little benefit off-road.

The bottom line is that the M 1300 GS is moving away from the classic adventure tourer and towards a sports machine intended to show what a GS is capable of today.

What is the BMW M 1300 GS expected to cost?

No price is known, but the existing M models provide a reference point. In Europe, the M 1000 XR and M 1000 R without extras sit on average 6,000 to 8,000 euros above the next cheapest version.

On the US market the gap is bigger. There, the two M models are separated from the next cheapest variant by roughly 8,000 to 12,000 US dollars. A similar gap to the base model is to be expected for the M 1300 GS. Lower production numbers combined with a higher margin for the manufacturer fit that picture. The M 1300 GS should therefore sit at the top of the boxer range in terms of both capability and price.

When will the BMW M 1300 GS reach the market?

There is no official date. A launch before the 2027 season is nevertheless considered likely.

Before that, a gentle revision of the best-selling R 1300 GS is still due, possibly as early as the beginning of autumn. One clue comes from BMW’s official model year 2027 list, published on 2 July 2026 and valid from August 2026. The R 1300 GS and the R 1300 GS Adventure are missing from it entirely, as are the F 450 GS and the F 900 GS. From the enduro corner, only the retro variant R 12 G/S is listed, and in the new colour Frozen Brooklyn Grey metallic at that. Models missing from such a list are usually an indication that something new is coming. According to media reports, the revised R 1300 GS is expected to go into production straight after the factory holidays in September, among other finishes in a light yellow that shimmered through the cover on the spy shot.

The GS range gets broader in 2027

For the 2027 model year, a three-way split of the boxer GS is emerging. Alongside the revised R 1300 GS and the R 1300 GS Adventure, the M 1300 GS is set to join as the new flagship.

The three models would take on different jobs. The R 1300 GS remains the all-rounder, the Adventure with its large tank the long-distance specialist, and the M 1300 GS occupies the sporty off-road corner. BMW is thereby responding to a trend visible across the whole class: adventure bikes are increasingly being fanned out into different directions instead of covering everything with a single model. This plan has not been confirmed so far, but the evidence from spy shots and model lists points clearly in that direction.
