Raul Fernandez Wins at Silverstone: Marc Marquez Loses Championship Ground

The twelfth round of the 2026 MotoGP season delivered exactly what the whole weekend had hinted at. Aprilia was in a league of its own at Silverstone, and it was the satellite rider who had the final say. Raul Fernandez took the lead for the Trackhouse team in the very first corner and never gave it up across 20 laps. For the Spaniard it was his second win in the premier class, achieved in the 150th Grand Prix of his career and just days after his contract extension. At the same time, MotoGP Silverstone 2026 was a race in which a third of the field failed to finish.

How did Raul Fernandez win the British Grand Prix?

Raul Fernandez won because he took the lead in the first corner and immediately pulled clear. After a single lap he was more than a second ahead, and after five laps the gap was over three seconds.

The start was the decisive moment of the race. Pole sitter Jorge Martin failed to release the rear ride-height device, his bike stayed low and dragged across the asphalt in a shower of sparks. Fernandez used the gap, went through on the inside and had clear track ahead of him. On lap three he set the fastest lap of the race and at times led by more than four seconds.

Unlike in Saturday’s sprint, where Fernandez crashed himself, he made no mistake this time. In the closing stages he eased the pace slightly and brought the advantage home by 2.538 seconds. His first win was not long ago, coming at the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island last year. Team boss Justin Marks, on site in person for the first time, afterwards spoke of one of the most complete performances he had seen from his rider.

Fernandez summed up his day briefly: “I enjoy like a kid and, yeah, we win.”

Why did Jorge Martin lose the win in the very first corner?

Jorge Martin lost the win because his rear ride-height device did not release under braking for Abbey. That dropped him to fourth and he had to work his way forward all over again.

The same problem hit his brand colleague Ai Ogura. Both riders dragged their belly pans across the track and both lost several positions. Martin got back past Marc Marquez into third before the end of the opening lap and moved past Marco Bezzecchi into second on lap nine. He was able to cut the gap to Fernandez at times, but it was never enough for a genuine attack.

The Spaniard assessed the moment himself after the race: “I did a small mistake in the start. I was with a device activated, so all the riders were overtaking me.”

For the championship, second place was still a gain. Martin had won the sprint and collected 32 points across the weekend.

What did Marco Bezzecchi achieve despite his injury?

Marco Bezzecchi finished third despite collarbone and knee injuries and defended that position over the full distance. It was his first Sunday result since his win at the Italian Grand Prix in late May.

The Italian had crashed at the German Grand Prix before the summer break and needed surgery. Ahead of the race he had voiced doubts himself about whether his body would last 20 laps. After the sprint he said that qualifying alone had already pushed him to his limit.

In the Grand Prix he kept Alex Marquez behind him over the final laps, even though the Gresini rider was quicker at times. On the penultimate lap Bezzecchi set his personal best time of the race. At the finish he was physically spent and needed help on the way to the podium. “It’s difficult to speak, but yeah, I’m very, very happy,” he said.

Why was Ducati off the pace at Silverstone?

Ducati was off the pace because the medium rear tyre dropped off far earlier on the GP26 machines than on the Aprilias. The best Ducati rider was Alex Marquez in fourth, 4.702 seconds behind.

In the sprint, Marc Marquez had already slipped from third to ninth. The pattern repeated itself in the Grand Prix. The reigning world champion was passed in turn by Alex Marquez, Pedro Acosta and, in the closing stages, Fabio Di Giannantonio, finishing seventh at 9.550 seconds.

Alex Marquez came close to cracking the Aprilia podium. He was already fourth on lap twelve and closing on Bezzecchi, but a riding error at Abbey cost him two positions and around three seconds. That time was missing at the end.

Pecco Bagnaia had a weekend to forget. The Italian started from 16th, ran outside the points and crashed at Luffield, exactly where his race had also ended last year.

Seven retirements shape the race at Silverstone

The race was marked by crashes from the outset. Joan Mir went down at turn seven on the opening lap, and Alex Rins, unable to avoid him, crashed as well. The stewards reviewed the incident and decided against a penalty.

Enea Bastianini retired on lap six, Iker Lecuona shortly afterwards. On lap seven it was Cal Crutchlow, standing in as a replacement rider at LCR Honda. On lap ten Ai Ogura crashed after dropping to seventh. For the Japanese rider it was his first major riding error of the season.

In the end, 16 riders were classified. Conditions were dry, with an air temperature of 27 degrees and a track temperature of 44 degrees. Every starter had opted for the hard compound at the front and the medium at the rear.

The remaining points positions went to Franco Morbidelli, Fabio Quartararo as the leading Yamaha rider, Jack Miller, Pol Espargaro and Toprak Razgatlioglu. Augusto Fernandez finished 16th as a wildcard entry.

What do the championship standings look like after Silverstone?

Jorge Martin leads the world championship with 240 points and is 31 points clear of Marco Bezzecchi. Ai Ogura dropped to third after his retirement.

Behind Bezzecchi on 209 points come Ogura on 203 and Marc Marquez on 200. For the world champion that is a clear deterioration, because his deficit had been just 18 points before the weekend. Fabio Di Giannantonio is fifth, one point behind Marquez, and Raul Fernandez is sixth, 56 points back.

After twelve of 22 race weekends, 370 points are still available. Aprilia has already won with all four of the riders it fields this season, namely Martin, Ogura, Bezzecchi and now Raul Fernandez.

When does the MotoGP season continue?

The MotoGP season resumes at the end of August in Aragon after two free weekends. The Spanish circuit is regarded as one of Marc Marquez’s strongest tracks.

Silverstone, meanwhile, stays on the calendar. An extension until the end of 2028 was announced ahead of the race weekend. One statistic about the circuit remains remarkable: with Raul Fernandez, the twelfth consecutive visit produced a twelfth different winner.
