- Bagnaia had surgery on his right forearm and aims to return at the British GP in Silverstone (August 7–9).
- Marc Marquez stays with Ducati for 2027, while his brother Alex moves from Gresini to the KTM factory team.
- Jorge Lorenzo considers Marc Marquez the most intelligent rider in the field, even if his explosiveness has faded.
After the first half of the 2026 season, the MotoGP title fight is closer than it has been in a long time. Jorge Martin leads on the Aprilia, but Marc Marquez has clawed back significant ground with three wins from the last four Grands Prix. The teams head into the break with full schedules: Ducati has just been through surgery, KTM has locked in a prominent signing, and Marquez’s form for the second half of the season is already being fiercely debated.

Why did Francesco Bagnaia need arm surgery?
Bagnaia had surgery on his right forearm on Wednesday to fix a chronic arm pump problem. The procedure was an endoscopic fasciotomy, a common treatment for so-called compartment syndrome. Under load, pressure builds up in the forearm muscles, causing pain and limiting strength in the hand and fingers. The problem is well known among motorcycle racers, since their arms are under constant heavy strain at race pace.
The procedure took place in Italy, at the orthopaedic clinic of the Policlinico di Modena. The medical team was led by Professor Luigi Tarallo, with Professor Fabio Catani in overall charge. According to Ducati, the operation was successful and without complications.
One detail stands out: for much of the season, Bagnaia had complained less about physical issues than about a lack of rear-wheel grip. The surgery addresses his arm, while the bike’s handling as he described it remains unaffected.
When will Bagnaia return to MotoGP?
Bagnaia aims to return at the British GP in Silverstone from August 7 to 9, the first race after the summer break. Whether that happens depends on how his rehabilitation goes.
He will use the three race-free weeks to recover and build up. In the championship, he sits eighth after the first half of the season, 65 points behind leader Martin. His highlights include four consecutive podiums on race Sundays and the sprint win at the Czech GP. He finished sixth at the German GP. Eleven races remain, into which he wants to carry his momentum. For Bagnaia, this is his final season at Ducati: in 2027 he takes over the factory seat at Aprilia currently held by Martin.
Bagnaia isn’t the only one whose future is taking shape these weeks. While he moves to Aprilia, two of the grid’s best-known names are also on the move.

Where are the Marquez brothers heading in 2027?
Marc Marquez stays with the Ducati Lenovo factory team in 2027, while his younger brother Alex leaves Gresini for the KTM factory team. Both plans became official in recent weeks.
Marc Marquez said the brothers coordinated with each other before signing their respective contracts. At the press conference ahead of the German GP, he said of his brother’s move: “Super-happy that he signed for a factory team.” He added: “Alex last year finished second in the championship, and of course we discussed together our future. I asked his opinion for my future and he asked my opinion for his future.”
Why did Alex Marquez choose KTM of all teams?
For Alex Marquez, the move means stepping up from a satellite team to a factory team, with more influence on development and, according to media reports, better pay. From the outside the move looks risky: with Gresini he has won four Grands Prix over the past year and a half, while KTM has gone without a win since 2022, and even longer — since 2021 — in pure dry conditions.
As championship runner-up in 2025, however, he is aiming for official factory status. On top of that, 2027 brings a major shake-up: ride-height systems will be banned, displacement drops to 850cc, and Pirelli takes over from Michelin as tyre supplier. How strong each manufacturer will be under these new conditions is currently hard to predict.
KTM signed Marquez after previous factory rider Pedro Acosta left for Ducati. KTM motorsport director Pit Beirer explained the signing: “Alex brings not only outstanding skill and race intelligence but also determination and a winning mindset that perfectly matches our DNA.” For Marquez, 2027 will be his eighth season in the premier class, having previously ridden for Honda and Ducati. Italian rider Fabio Di Giannantonio is also moving to KTM. At the same time, the factory has current challenges: having weathered a financial crisis that, according to media reports, was resolved with support from Bajaj, the race department is now dealing with a technical issue in which strong vibrations force the control electronics into a limp-home mode and can cut power delivery.

How does Jorge Lorenzo rate the current Marc Marquez?
Lorenzo considers Marc Marquez the most complete and intelligent rider in the field, even though he no longer rides with the same explosiveness as ten or twelve years ago. The five-time world champion, who was Marquez’s Honda teammate in 2019, shared his assessment as a TV pundit.
Lorenzo pointed to the nine-time champion’s comeback: “Marc’s historic comeback is incredible. From a deficit of over 100 points, he’s closed the gap to just 18.” He said it’s a championship in which riders need to go extremely fast, but above all survive. On the maturity Marquez has gained, he said: “He’s no longer as explosive and dominant as he was 10 or 12 years ago, but he’s the most well-rounded and intelligent rider on the grid today.” As an example, he cited the race at Assen, where Marquez held on despite difficult conditions and forced Marco Bezzecchi into a mistake. At the German GP at the Sachsenring, Ducati recently celebrated a one-two finish with Marquez on top.
Marquez’s form depends heavily on track layout
Marquez started the 2026 season still recovering. At the Indonesian Grand Prix in October he suffered a shoulder fracture, the effects of which hampered his usual pace through left-hand corners — traditionally one of his greatest strengths. When the issue hadn’t resolved itself by Jerez in April, he underwent surgery again. On his return at Mugello, an improvement in performance was immediately visible. The 33-year-old still needs time to reach full fitness, and the summer break should speed up his recovery.
For the second half of the season, Lorenzo expects Marquez’s results to fluctuate depending on the circuit. He points out that most tracks are dominated by right-hand corners, where the arm problem weighs more heavily. On tracks with plenty of left-handers, such as the Sachsenring, Phillip Island or Aragon, Marquez should be able to sustain his pace for longer and manage himself less. That’s where his greatest strength comes into play: a fast entry into left-hand corners. The summer break thus fits into a season in which injuries, contract moves and a tight title fight are simultaneously shaping the second half of 2026 and the grid for the new 850cc era starting in 2027.
