Yamaha R2 Arrives on 27 August: What Is Behind the New 200

Yamaha is launching a new fully faired machine in the R series on 27 August 2026, positioned between the R15 and the R3. Pre-orders are already running, while the manufacturer is holding back official technical data until the premiere.
  • Premiere in India on 27 August 2026, pre-orders possible for 10,000 rupees (around 89 euros / 103 US dollars)
  • Around 25 hp (18.4 kW) are expected from a liquid-cooled single-cylinder displacing roughly 200 to 220 cubic centimetres
  • The name YZF-R2 is registered as a trademark in India, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines, among other markets

For a long time the R2 was little more than a rumour based on trademark filings. Yamaha secured the naming rights to YZF-R2 and YZF-R20 in Japan back in 2021. Now a date has been set and the campaign around it is already running. Yamaha has still not confirmed the model name, and the manufacturer is officially staying silent on the technology as well. What has been circulating so far comes from industry reports and from what can be read into Yamaha’s own teaser campaign.

When and where will the Yamaha R2 be unveiled?

The premiere takes place on 27 August 2026 in India. Yamaha has invited members of the media for that day and names the date on its booking page as well, although it adds there that the schedule is provisional.

There is a simple reason why India goes first. The 155 cubic centimetre R15 has been a best seller there for years. It is built at the Surajpur plant, which has produced more than one million units across four model generations since the market launch in 2008. The new R2, by contrast, is set to roll off the line at the Chennai plant. Unlike the imported R3, it would therefore be a locally manufactured model, which gives Yamaha room to manoeuvre on price and makes exports to other markets easier.

What does the teaser reveal about the name?

The teaser does not state the name, but it hints at it. Yamaha shows the familiar R logo of the sport range together with the claim “We R On Our Way” and the hashtag #RInstinct.

Things get interesting with the logo itself. The right half of the stylised R is drawn and slightly split in such a way that it resembles a two. Together with the trademark filings, that paints a fairly clear picture without Yamaha having to say the name out loud. Even so, it is not confirmed.

Which engine is the Yamaha R2 expected to get?

A liquid-cooled single-cylinder with roughly 200 to 220 cubic centimetres is expected, derived from the R15 unit. Output is said to be around 25 hp (18.4 kW) and about 20 Nm (14.8 lb-ft). None of this has been officially confirmed.

For comparison: the current R15 V4 makes 18.4 hp (13.5 kW) and 14.5 Nm (10.7 lb-ft). The R2 would therefore sit noticeably above it, but remain well below the R3 and its 42 hp (30.9 kW). At the bottom end, the R125 rounds off the range with 15 hp (11 kW). The new model is aimed precisely at that gap.

Yamaha’s VVA system should also be on board. Behind it sits a variable valve timing setup that switches between two cam profiles depending on engine speed. The engine is meant to stay eager to rev at the top end without becoming too sluggish in everyday use. A six-speed gearbox is considered a given.

Which technology does the R2 take over from the R15?

Most likely the basic architecture. The familiar Deltabox frame, an upside-down fork, a central rear shock and dual-channel ABS are all mentioned. The Deltabox is Yamaha’s bridge-type frame made of two side beams that connects engine and swingarm over the shortest possible path.

Adjustments to the chassis to suit the higher output are likely, for example in the calibration of the suspension components and in the brakes. It rolls on 17-inch wheels with disc brakes front and rear. Internally, the project is said to carry the designation 070.

In terms of equipment, the R2 could go a step further than the R15, which already offers a TFT display, traction control and a quickshifter in its top versions. A colour TFT instrument, Yamaha’s Y-Connect smartphone link with call and message alerts, riding data and a reminder of the last parking spot are expected, plus a slipper clutch and a ride-by-wire throttle. The latter would be the real door opener, because it allows riding modes and a bidirectional quickshifter to be implemented. There is also talk of switchable traction control and selectable ABS modes, and in isolated cases even of cruise control.

What is the Yamaha R2 expected to cost?

Estimates range between 2 and 2.5 lakh rupees, which is around 1,780 to 2,225 euros (2,060 to 2,575 US dollars) before taxes and registration. The most frequently mentioned entry point is 2 to 2.2 lakh rupees (around 1,780 to 1,960 euros / 2,060 to 2,270 US dollars).

Yamaha itself does not name a price. The booking page states that variant, technical data and price will only be announced after the presentation. The model can nevertheless already be pre-ordered, for 10,000 rupees (around 89 euros / 103 US dollars). The amount is refundable, although refunds are only to be processed from 5 September onwards. Anyone who pre-orders is meant to be supplied with priority, but depending on availability more than 45 days may pass before delivery. For the first 100 customers, Yamaha is additionally offering the chance to meet MotoGP riders Alex Rins and Fabio Quartararo.

For context: the R15 starts at 1.57 lakh rupees (around 1,400 euros / 1,620 US dollars) and runs up to 1.98 lakh rupees (around 1,760 euros / 2,040 US dollars) for the top M version. The R2 therefore positions itself above that.

Is the R15 now disappearing from the range?

No. The R15 stays on offer and will be sold alongside the R2. It is expected, however, that Yamaha will thin out the range.

The most likely candidate to be dropped is the top R15 M version, because it sits closest to the R2 on price. The R15S based on the third generation could also be discontinued. The XSR 155 and the MT-15, on the other hand, are set to remain on offer. For Yamaha that creates a clearer ladder: entry with the R15, next step with the R2.

Who does the Yamaha R2 compete against?

The main rivals are the KTM RC 200, the Hero Karizma XMR 210 and the Bajaj Pulsar RS200. All of them move within the same price and performance window.

The RC 200 costs 2.24 lakh rupees (around 1,995 euros / 2,310 US dollars), the Karizma XMR starts at 1.76 lakh rupees (around 1,565 euros / 1,815 US dollars). Both make around 25 hp, which is why the R2 is likely to look for its advantage in weight instead. The KTM weighs 160 kg (353 lbs), the Hero 163.5 kg (360 lbs). The R15 V4, by contrast, tips the scales at just 141 kg (311 lbs). If Yamaha carries that lightweight approach over to the R2, it would be a solid argument even without extra power.

Will the Yamaha R2 also come to Europe?

There is no firm date for Europe. The naming rights, however, have been secured worldwide, including in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines, which points to sales beyond India at a later stage.

Production in Chennai also speaks in favour of that, as it is said to be geared towards exports from the outset. Depending on the target market, differences in equipment are possible. Whether and when the R2 will be offered in Germany therefore remains open.

Further models based on the new platform

If it does not stop at one model, that would be no break with the previous approach. With the 155 platform, Yamaha has already demonstrated how one engine can be spread across several ranges, from the R15 through the MT-15 to the XSR 155.

The same recipes look obvious for the new platform. An unfaired naked bike in the style of an MT-02 would be the logical continuation, a retro model along the lines of an XSR 200 likewise. None of these variants is confirmed. Within the 2026 model year, the R2 would therefore be less a standalone machine than the starting point of a new displacement class at Yamaha.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When is the Yamaha R2 coming?

The unveiling is scheduled for 27 August 2026 in India. Yamaha names this date on its booking page but points out there that the schedule is provisional. Pre-orders are already running.

  • How much power does the Yamaha R2 have?

There are no official figures yet. Around 25 hp (18.4 kW) and roughly 20 Nm (14.8 lb-ft) from a liquid-cooled single-cylinder are expected. That would place it between the R15 with 18.4 hp (13.5 kW) and the R3 with 42 hp (30.9 kW).

  • What does the Yamaha R2 cost?

The price is not confirmed. Industry estimates range between 2 and 2.5 lakh rupees, which is around 1,780 to 2,225 euros (2,060 to 2,575 US dollars) before taxes. The pre-order costs 10,000 rupees (around 89 euros / 103 US dollars) and is credited against the purchase price.

  • Does the R2 replace the Yamaha R15?

No, both models are set to be offered alongside each other. Only a thinning out of the R15 range is expected, with the top M version seen as the most likely candidate to be dropped.

  • Will the Yamaha R2 be sold in Europe?

No date for Europe is known. However, the name is also protected as a trademark in Europe, and production in Chennai is intended to enable exports to further markets.
