- Red flag in lap 2: After a crash at the 11th Milestone, the fallen rider was conscious and airlifted to Noble’s Hospital
- Dean Harrison led by over 15 seconds and was running about one second under record pace in lap 2
- Restart on Saturday at 12:00 noon local time, followed by the second Sportbike race
The Senior TT is considered the most important race of the Tourist Trophy, and after last year’s weather-related cancellation, expectations on the Isle of Man were sky-high. Yet for the second consecutive year, the race failed to reach a regular finish: At approximately 6:54 pm local time, race officials red-flagged the four-lap event during the second lap. For the riders, teams, and spectators lining the Mountain Course, an already turbulent Friday ended with an unresolved cliffhanger set to be decided on Saturday.

Why was the 2026 Senior TT red-flagged?
The Senior TT was red-flagged after a crash occurred at the 11th Milestone during the second racing lap. According to race officials, the rider involved was conscious and responsive at the time of the report and was airlifted to Noble’s Hospital by the Airmed helicopter for further examination and treatment.
The organizer initially withheld the identity of the fallen rider and gave no details about the cause of the accident. The 11th Milestone is located in the fast section between Glen Helen and Kirk Michael, where the superbikes reach high speeds. During the emergency response, riders were held at various points around the 37.73-mile Mountain Course before race officials announced the definitive stoppage.
How did the race unfold before the red flag?
Until the red flag, Dean Harrison dominated the race at will and was on course for the fastest race in TT history. The Honda factory rider opened with a standing-start lap of 135.166 mph, completed the first lap in 16:44.9 minutes, and already led Peter Hickman by 12.4 seconds after lap one, with the BMW rider also posting a strong 133.51 mph.
In the second lap, Harrison pushed even harder: At Ballaugh, his lead over the BMW rider had already grown to more than 15 seconds, and his lap time at that point was approximately one second under the lap record. TT expert Cam Donald commented during the TV broadcast that the fastest race ever run on the course was taking shape. Notably, Harrison had made a last-minute decision to use his machine in full Superstock specification rather than his hybrid superbike, as he preferred its handling. Behind the leading duo, Josh Brookes, Ian Hutchinson, and Michael Dunlop held positions three through five. Dunlop, however, never found his rhythm: His Honda superbike only managed 192 mph in the speed trap compared to the 200-plus mph from the Superbike race, and on the road he had to let Brookes past despite the latter starting ten seconds behind him. For Honda, the race also represents a long drought: The manufacturer’s last Senior TT victory dates back to 2015 through John McGuinness.

When will the 2026 Senior TT restart?
The Senior TT will restart on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 12:00 noon local time. Roads around the Mountain Course will close at 10:00 am, and the second Sportbike race is scheduled for 3:00 pm following the Senior TT.
A restart on Friday evening was not possible. The race director explained that after clearing the incident scene, the remaining time within the road-closure window would not have been sufficient for a race over the full four-lap distance. Falling temperatures and fading daylight were additional factors. Whether the schedule holds depends once again on the weather: The forecast for Saturday is mixed.
A Friday of delays and two Dunlop victories
The red flag marked the end of a day that had been off-schedule from the start. Originally, the Senior TT was planned for Saturday but was moved to Friday due to the poor weather forecast. There, the start scheduled for 4:15 pm was delayed three times: first by an hour due to a road traffic accident on the Mountain Road in the morning, then due to a non-race-related organizational matter to 6:15 pm, and finally by another ten minutes due to a medical emergency unrelated to racing. The race eventually started at 6:25 pm, on the first possible race day since Tuesday.
Sportingly, the Friday had belonged to Michael Dunlop until then. The Northern Irishman first won the second Supersport race on the Ducati V2 — his tenth consecutive victory in the class — before adding the first Sportbike race on the Paton, decisively beating the old Supertwin lap record in the process. With now 36 TT victories, he extended his own all-time record further. The Senior TT thus remains the missing piece of a race week that has already been reshuffled multiple times due to weather.

Tribute Lap: Michael Dunlop on Joey’s Honda SP1
The evening found a consoling conclusion nonetheless. After the red flag, Michael Dunlop completed the announced tribute lap for his uncle Joey Dunlop on a replica of the Honda SP1 that Joey had ridden to victory in the Formula 1 race at the TT in 2000, complete with the famous yellow helmet, matching boots, and leathers.
Visibly moved was John McGuinness, who had been Joey’s teammate in 2000 and lapped at 121.7 mph on the SP1 that year. At the start line, he recalled that it had felt as if the real Joey was rolling to the line, and that both Dunlops shared a love for working on their own machines. The 54-year-old, who is contesting his 30th TT with a retro livery as a tribute to his former team boss Paul Bird, also raised eyebrows with a remark about his own future: “I can’t finish on a red flag, can I?”
