Isle of Man TT 2027: Dates Confirmed, Sportbike Class and New Race Format from 2026

Even before the 2026 Tourist Trophy has started on the Isle of Man, the dates for TT 2027 and TT 2028 are already confirmed. The ten-race program on the Mountain Course is also gaining a new race class, more rest days, and a revised schedule from 2026 onward.
  • The TT 2027 will take place from May 31 to June 12, 2027, with the TT 2028 provisionally scheduled for May 29 to June 10, 2028
  • From 2026, the new Sportbike class replaces the former Supertwin class, opening the field to three-cylinder machines
  • Visitor numbers at the TT 2025 reached 51,649, the highest since 2010, with estimated total spending of 51.9 million pounds (approximately 61.4 million euros / 64.5 million US dollars)

The organizers of the Isle of Man TT have announced the dates for the upcoming editions of the world’s most historic road race. The TT 2027 will run from Monday, May 31, to Saturday, June 12, 2027. As usual, the event begins on the bank holiday and spans two weeks of qualifying and racing on the 37.73-mile Snaefell Mountain Course. The finale is traditionally the Milwaukee Senior TT on the final Saturday. For the TT 2028, the dates of May 29 to June 10, 2028 are provisionally scheduled.

The early announcement of dates has a practical reason: fans, teams, marshals, and tour operators are given sufficient lead time for planning. The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company ferries from Heysham, Liverpool, and Dublin to Douglas are regularly booked out months in advance during TT weeks. A detailed daily schedule for the TT 2027 is expected to be published after the evaluation of the TT 2026.

What Is Changing in the TT Schedule from 2026?

Starting with the TT 2026, which runs from May 25 to June 6, several structural adjustments take effect that will also set the direction for future years. The number of rest days increases from two to three. During qualifying week, a rest day on Thursday is introduced for the first time, giving riders, marshals, medics, and officials a recovery break after three consecutive practice days. At the same time, the number of practice and qualifying sessions rises from six to seven, partly through an additional daytime session on Wednesday. This shifts the focus away from evening practice toward daytime running, offering riders better preparation conditions for race day.

Race week itself sees a change in the running order: Superstock and Supersport swap places in the program. Superstock will now run on the same day as the Sidecar races, while Supersport is paired with the new Sportbike class. The reason lies in the physical demands of the 1000cc machines. Solo riders will no longer have to compete in another class on the same day they ride a Superbike or Superstock machine with over 200 horsepower around the Mountain Course.

Additionally, the contingency windows for weather-related delays have been expanded. This creates more flexibility when bad weather causes disruptions, a problem that has repeatedly affected the TT in recent years. The Sunday after the Senior TT remains available as a fully equipped reserve race day. Gary Thompson, Clerk of the Course, stated: “The refinements to the 2026 schedule reinforce the core structure of the event and ensure we remain responsive to the unique and evolving demands of the modern-day TT.”

Thompson also noted that the expanded contingency windows are intended to allow more dynamic and safer decision-making in difficult conditions, which not only safeguards the race program but also reduces disruption to the public from road closures.

Why Is the Supertwin Class Becoming the Sportbike TT?

The most significant change in terms of content concerns the former Supertwin class. From the TT 2026 onward, the two races are officially called Sportbike TT Race 1 and Sportbike TT Race 2. The rule change permits machines from the Sportbike category of the British Superbike Championship (BSB) to compete for the first time. Previously, the Supertwin class was dominated by highly tuned 650cc twin-cylinder machines such as the Kawasaki-powered Paton S1-R, the Aprilia RS 660, the Yamaha R7, and the Kawasaki Z650. These machines remain eligible to compete.

Newly added are motorcycles such as the Suzuki GSX-8R, the Honda Hornet 750, the Triumph Daytona 660, and the CF Moto 675SR-R. This means three-cylinder machines are permitted in this class for the first time. The opening is intended to broaden the field, increase manufacturer diversity, and reduce costs for competitors who previously had to invest substantial sums in tuning the smaller 650cc bikes.

The organizers emphasize that this adjustment reflects international trends. Both in British and world championship racing, the Sportbike class has established itself as a standalone category. The Supersport class is simultaneously transitioning to the internationally adopted Next-Generation rules.

What Is the Economic Significance of the TT for the Isle of Man?

The TT is far more than a motorsport event for the Isle of Man. The TT 2025 visitor survey, conducted by TSE Research at the ferry terminal in Douglas and at Ronaldsway Airport, provides concrete figures. An estimated 51,649 people visited the island during TT weeks, the highest figure since 2010. For comparison: 47,105 visitors came in 2024, and 43,000 in 2023.

Average spending per visitor was 1,015 pounds (approximately 1,200 euros / 1,260 US dollars) according to the survey. Estimated total visitor spending during the TT 2025 amounted to 51.9 million pounds (approximately 61.4 million euros / 64.5 million US dollars), a significant increase over the 46.7 million pounds of the previous year. The average length of stay was 6.54 nights, with a total of 336,891 overnight stays. 85.1 percent of visitors used paid accommodation.

Geographically, 74.4 percent of visitors came from Great Britain and Ireland, 11.8 percent from the rest of Europe, and 13.7 percent from the rest of the world. 98 percent said the trip met or exceeded their expectations. The largest age group, at 36.5 percent, was the 46-to-60 bracket. Paul Phillips, Head of Motorsport for the Isle of Man TT, described the event as one that delivers sustainably growing global reach and increasing economic benefit to the island.

What Do the Changes Mean for the Future of the TT?

The TT last underwent a major schedule overhaul in 2023, when an additional Superstock and an additional Supertwin race were introduced and the Senior TT was moved from Friday to Saturday. The ten-race program has noticeably boosted interest since then. Visitor numbers have grown for several consecutive years, and the organizers have stated the goal of sustainably reaching and surpassing the 50,000 annual visitor mark.

The early announcement of dates for 2027 and 2028, the introduction of the Sportbike class, and the increased schedule flexibility are part of a long-term strategy. Phillips put it this way: “We’re focused on delivering a sustainable world-class event that continues to grow its global audience, delivers increasing benefits to the Island’s economy, and secures the future of the races for generations to come.”

The event thus finds itself in a tension between tradition and modernization. The Mountain Course, where racing has taken place since 1911, remains unchanged. But the framework around it — from race classes to the schedule to spectator infrastructure — is being continuously adapted. The TT 2025 saw a five percent increase in ferry passengers over the previous year and a record number of nearly 2,000 volunteer marshals who registered before the event, according to the organizers.

Whether the new measures can sustain the upward trend in visitor numbers will only become clear after the TT 2026. However, the TT 2025 data suggests that the road race on the Isle of Man is not only retaining its core audience but also reaching new demographics, with the share of international visitors from outside the British Isles standing at 25.5 percent.
