Zontes 703R and 703T Arrive: Ride-by-Wire and Cruise Control as Standard

Zontes expands its 703 three-cylinder range from two to four models, placing the 703R naked bike and the 703T sport tourer alongside the familiar 703RR and 703F. From model year 2027 the entire range gets an electronic throttle, cruise control and a quickshifter that works in both directions.
  • Three-cylinder engine with 699 cc, 95 hp (70 kW) at 11,500 rpm, restricted to 35 kW (47.6 hp) for the A2 licence
  • New ETC versions with ride-by-wire, six-axis sensor, cornering ABS and cruise control
  • Recommended price in Spain: 6,488 euros (around 7,530 US dollars) for the 703R, 7,288 euros (around 8,460 US dollars) for the 703T

Zontes was one of the first Chinese manufacturers to develop its own three-cylinder engine instead of copying an established one. The first two models with this engine were shown at the EICMA in Milan in 2023, and a year later the naked variant followed at the same show. Now the range is reaching its provisional conclusion: with the 703R and the 703T, Zontes covers the four most common middleweight formats, from the supersport machine and the adventure bike to the naked bike and the tourer. The technical basis remains the same across all four models.

What changes on the Zontes 703 from model year 2027?

From model year 2027, the entire 703 range comes with an electronic throttle as standard, referred to as Electronic Throttle Control or ETC for short. This does away with the conventional cable between the throttle grip and the throttle body, with a control unit taking over.

The most important practical effect of this change is cruise control, which cannot be implemented without an electronic throttle. Added to that are a finer throttle response and more precise engine management. Also new for every model in the range is a quickshifter that works without the clutch both on upshifts and on downshifts. On the 703RR this aid previously worked in one direction only, with the clutch still needed for downshifts.

Beyond the electronics there are revised switchgear units on the handlebar, a reorganised menu structure and a TFT display said to be easier to read. In the Benelux countries the ETC versions are expected from late summer or autumn 2026.

How is the Zontes 703R equipped?

The 703R is the naked bike of the range and does without a large fairing, so that the aluminium frame remains largely visible. Standard equipment includes heated grips and a 6.75-inch TFT display.

The display offers a smartphone connection, navigation, a mirroring function, an outside temperature readout and real-time monitoring of tyre pressure and tyre temperature. The riding position is set up considerably more sportily than on the touring variant. The equipment list also includes LED lighting, a lithium battery, a third-generation keyless system, backlit controls with a joystick and USB ports of type A and type C.

The 703R is offered in three colour variants: Lava Red, Black Grey and Dark Grey with blue. At EICMA 2024 the prototype shown at the time weighed 191 kg (421 lbs) ready to ride; a production figure for the ETC version has not been published so far.

What does the Zontes 703T offer on long distances?

The 703T is the tourer of the range and comes from the factory with almost everything that usually costs extra on long stages. That includes an electrically adjustable windscreen, heated grips and seat, crash bars, hand guards, auxiliary lights and mounts for three cases, so that side cases and a top case can be fitted without an additional rack.

The tank holds 20 litres including a 4.2-litre reserve. With a stated consumption of 4.3 litres per 100 kilometres, that results in a range of well over 350 kilometres. The instruments sit in an 8-inch TFT display with navigation, a mirroring function and tyre pressure monitoring. High-resolution cameras with a night sensor work at the front and rear, either recording permanently in dashcam mode or storing footage as an action camera on request.

Unlike the 703F, the 703T rolls on 17-inch cast wheels with road tyres. Four riding modes are available: Road, Sport, Rain and Rider. A six-axis sensor works together with the two-channel cornering ABS and the traction control. Seat height is 805 millimetres and the wheelbase measures 1,480 millimetres. Figures for weight differ: the manufacturer quotes 216 kg (476 lbs) ready to ride, while media reports put it at around 206 kg (454 lbs). The 703T is available in Bright Silver with blue and in Special Black in black with gold.

The three-cylinder engine and the chassis in detail

All four models use the same liquid-cooled inline three-cylinder engine with 699 cc, two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. Bore and stroke measure 70 by 60.6 millimetres and the compression ratio is 13:1. For Germany, Zontes quotes an output of 70 kW (95 hp) at 11,500 rpm and maximum torque of 74.4 Nm (54.9 lb-ft) at 8,500 rpm. A restricted version with 35 kW (47.6 hp) is available for the A2 licence.

A look back is interesting: at EICMA 2024 the naked variant was still announced with 102 hp. In the production version presented now it makes the same 95 hp as the rest of the 703 models. The engine uses forged pistons, a friction-reducing DLC coating on internal components, a balancer shaft and a slipper clutch that damps rear wheel hopping under hard downshifting.

The frame is made of die-cast aluminium. On the 703T the main frame weighs 12.5 kg and, according to the manufacturer, withstands 20,000 newtons; the subframe and swingarm together weigh 2.7 kg. The suspension components come from Marzocchi and are adjustable. The new ETC models use a Nissin front brake system with a radial master cylinder and radially mounted four-piston calipers, while a J.Juan caliper works at the rear. Michelin tyres are fitted from the factory. The electronic basis with ride-by-wire and the six-axis sensor comes from Marelli.

What do the new models cost and when do they arrive?

No official prices are available for Germany so far. In Spain, Zontes quotes 6,488 euros (around 7,530 US dollars) for the 703R and 7,288 euros (around 8,460 US dollars) for the 703T, in each case including a five-year warranty and one year of free insurance.

The price spread within Europe is considerable. In the Netherlands, 8,499 euros (around 9,870 US dollars) are asked for the 703R and 9,399 euros (around 10,910 US dollars) for the 703T, while in Belgium and Luxembourg the figures are 7,699 euros (around 8,940 US dollars) and 8,499 euros (around 9,870 US dollars). Between the Spanish and the Dutch price of the 703T there is therefore a gap of more than 2,000 euros.

On timing, October 2026 applies in Spain as the date for the 703T, with the 703R set to follow during the autumn. In the Benelux countries the ETC versions are expected from late summer or autumn 2026. In Germany, Zontes so far lists the 703T on its own site as an upcoming model, while the 703R does not appear there yet. According to media reports, the first German dealers are said to be offering the 703T for around 9,000 euros (approximately 10,450 US dollars).

What happens to the 703RR and 703F?

Both remain in the range and also receive the ETC technology as well as new colours. The 703RR is the fully faired sports machine of the range and weighs 196 kg (432 lbs) ready to ride, its tank holds 16 litres and the seat height is 820 millimetres. At the front it brakes via twin 300-millimetre discs with radially mounted four-piston Brembo calipers. New in the colour range are Lava Red and Glossy Black, alongside which Bright Silver with blue remains available.

The 703F is the adventure bike of the range and continues to be available with either a 19-inch or a 21-inch front wheel. Standard equipment includes an electrically adjustable windscreen, heated grips, front and rear cameras, riding modes, traction control and a quickshifter. Piano Black with grey and Bright Silver with dark grey join the colour range.

By expanding to four models, Zontes moves up in the 2027 model year into a class in which Japanese and European manufacturers have so far largely set the prices. Whether the plan works out depends less on the equipment list than on the dealer network and the supply of spare parts. One indication of the manufacturer’s confidence is the five-year warranty that forms part of the offer in Spain.
