MotoGP San Marino 2025: Marquez wins thrilling duel against Bezzecchi – crashes and mechanical failures dominate race in Misano

The 16th race of the 2025 MotoGP season at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli was an intense race with a clear duel at the top: Marc Marquez (Ducati) narrowly beat Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) and thus celebrated revenge for his sprint crash the day before. Bezzecchi, who had performed strongly throughout the weekend, was able to withstand the pressure from the multiple world champion for a long time, but made a small mistake that gave Marquez the decisive advantage.

The Spaniard commented on his success: “Yesterday’s mistake spurred me on to greater concentration and energy. I knew Bezzecchi wouldn’t give me any opportunities, so I had to wait for him to make a mistake – and he did.” Bezzecchi himself was nevertheless satisfied and spoke of “perhaps the best race of my life.”

Alex Marquez on the podium – VR46 strong

Alex Marquez (Gresini) completed the podium with a solid third place, albeit more than seven seconds behind the leading duo. The Spaniard dedicated this success to the late Gresini team founder Fausto Gresini.

VR46 riders Franco Morbidelli and Fabio Di Giannantonio finished a strong fourth and fifth in their home race. Fermin Aldeguer followed in sixth, while Luca Marini was the best Honda rider in seventh.

Quartararo falls back – Yamaha’s V4 engine under observation

Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) was initially able to keep up with the pace of the leaders and was in fourth place at one stage. However, from the middle of the race onwards, his medium rear tire deteriorated significantly, which dropped him back to eighth place. His conclusion: “We didn’t expect such degradation.”

Yamaha’s new V4 engine made its racing debut, including on Augusto Fernandez’s bike, who still managed to finish 14th despite technical problems. Fernandez had to ride in economy mode from lap ten onwards because the red warning light for fuel consumption came on. “When you have to manage your fuel for 17 laps, you can’t ride a consistent race,” he explained.

KTM with light and shade – Acosta again unlucky

Brad Binder (KTM) secured the only points for the Austrian manufacturer with tenth place. Teammate Pedro Acosta fought his way forward strongly in the early stages and was in fourth place at times before a broken chain forced him to retire. The young Spaniard took it in stride later: “These things can happen. It’s a technical sport.”

Jack Miller finished twelfth. Curiously, after the race, he rode against the direction of traffic to give his gloves to a fan. That cost him a fine of €2,000.

Numerous retirements – Bagnaia disappointing again

The race in Misano was marked by numerous retirements. In addition to Pedro Acosta, Francesco Bagnaia, Enea Bastianini, Maverick Vinales, Joan Mir, Johann Zarco, Ai Ogura, and Alex Rins, among others, retired early. It was another setback, especially for Bagnaia, who has already crashed several times this season. ServusTV expert Stefan Bradl was highly critical: “It looks so listless. There’s no need to feel sorry for him anymore.”

After his early retirement, Zarco explained that he had no way of avoiding the collision with Joan Mir. Mir himself was already struggling with neck pain and will probably also miss the next test. Ai Ogura also injured his wrist.

World Championship standings: Title decision draws closer

With his victory in Misano, Marc Marquez further extends his lead in the overall standings. He now has 517 points and could secure the world championship title at the next race in Motegi – his seventh in MotoGP. Alex Marquez is in second place with 330 points. In the battle for third place in the championship, Marco Bezzecchi (229 points) is closing in on Francesco Bagnaia (237 points) after a strong weekend.
