With the new KTM 990 DUKE R, the Austrian brand presents a further development in the naked bike segment for the 2025 model year. Nicknamed “The Punisher”, the R version was developed on the basis of the KTM 990 DUKE and offers more power, reduced mass and optimized technology that is designed to impress both on the road and on the race track.  The KTM 990 DUKE R is the latest model in the DUKE series, which has been in existence for 30 years, and is more aggressive and technically advanced than ever.

Design and ergonomics – striking looks and sophisticated functionality

The design of the KTM 990 DUKE R combines matt black and white accents with an eye-catching, glossy powder-coated frame in “Electronic Orange”.  Inspired by the second generation of the KTM 990 SUPER DUKE R from 2011 to 2013, the new DUKE bears the characteristic “R” on the tank – a reference to its sporty orientation and READY-TO-RACE DNA.

The seat height has been increased to 840 mm, which, in combination with increased ground clearance and a higher center of gravity, ensures improved riding dynamics.  The rider adopts a slightly forward-leaning, active position which, together with the revised footrests, enables a sportier posture.  In addition, the footrests are offset 33 mm to the rear and 12.5 mm upwards to ensure better control when cornering.

Engine and performance – more power for dynamic handling

The 947 cc LC8c engine of the KTM 990 DUKE R delivers a noticeable increase over the standard version with an output of 130 hp (approx. 95.6 kW) and a torque of 103 Nm at a maximum speed of 10,500 rpm.  This increase in power is due to improved mapping, which increases the responsiveness of the engine.  In addition, the engine remains the lightest in its class with a weight of 57 kg and meets the EURO5+ emission standards with CO₂ emissions of 110 g/km and average fuel consumption of 4.7 l/100 km.

Chassis and brakes – precision and control at the highest level

A key aspect of the KTM 990 DUKE R’s chassis is the use of the WP APEX open-cartridge fork with a diameter of 48 mm, which provides 143 mm of suspension travel.  The fork is 34% stiffer than the standard model and offers 30 clicks of rebound and compression adjustment, which can be adjusted on the left and right via color-coded controls.  The WP APEX rear shock has been fitted with a new deflection system that reduces the spring travel to 140 mm and offers various adjustment options for high and low-speed compression and preload.

For safe and controlled braking, four-piston Brembo Stylema monobloc brake callipers with 320 mm brake discs are fitted at the front, while a single-piston brake calliper, also from Brembo, and a 240 mm brake disc ensure deceleration at the rear.  The Brembo MCS master cylinder with adjustable transmission ratio enables sensitive adjustment of the brake pressure and precise response.

Electronics and assistance systems – state-of-the-art technologies for more flexibility

The KTM 990 DUKE R is equipped with a new 8.88-inch TFT touchscreen featuring inductive technology and a customizable split-screen function.  The display is specially coated to minimize glare, fingerprints and reflections.  In terms of user-friendliness, the menu navigation can be customized and operated with all KTM PowerWear gloves.

Several riding modes are available, including Rain, Road and Sport modes, as well as a customizable Custom option.  With the optional Track mode, riders can also fine-tune the traction control, anti-wheelie system and launch control mode.  In addition, the KTM 990 DUKE R has various ABS modes, including the new Supermoto+ mode, which gives experienced riders more freedom when braking and a controlled drift.

Chassis components and weight – lightweight construction for increased agility

The chassis consists of a lightweight tubular steel frame with a die-cast aluminum rear frame.  This integrates an airbox intake tract under the seat and ensures optimum cooling with specifically shaped air slots.  The swingarm of the KTM 990 DUKE R is based on the design of the LC8c naked bike and offers more flexibility and stability by reducing the material thickness of the shock absorber.  With a total weight of 190 kg (approx. 419 lbs), the 990 DUKE R is light and dynamic.

Tires and rims – optimum traction and handling for every road

For optimum road holding and traction, the KTM 990 DUKE R is equipped with Michelin Power Cup 2 tires, which are designed to grip reliably even at high speeds.  The tire sizes are 120/70 ZR17 at the front and 180/55 ZR17 at the rear.  The orange rims, which are inspired by the KTM 1390 SUPER DUKE R, contribute to the striking look.

Comfort and customization – from the seat to the PowerParts

The single seat of the KTM 990 DUKE R offers a sporty riding position and can be supplemented with a pillion seat cushion if required.  The rider can adjust the handlebars in four positions and thus customize the riding position.  KTM also offers a wide range of PowerParts and PowerWear, which have been specially developed for the DUKE series and allow the rider to customize the machine and its look according to their own preferences.

Summary and conclusion

With the KTM 990 DUKE R 2025, KTM is launching a technically mature and powerful mid-range machine that impresses with its striking design, high performance and innovative electronics.  Whether on the road or on the racetrack – the combination of robust chassis, precise brakes and individually customizable riding modes is designed to offer the right riding experience for every riding style.  As a member of the “READY TO RACE” family, the KTM 990 DUKE R aims to offer motorcyclists a balance of performance and control.
