Desmo450 MX 2027: What Ducati Changes After Its First Racing Season

Ducati is updating its Desmo450 MX and Desmo450 MX Factory motocross models for model year 2027 with lessons learned from racing. New features include shorter gearing, reinforced components and, for the first time, a dedicated suspension setup for the US market.
  • Rear sprocket with 51 instead of 49 teeth, larger fuel filler opening and new Pirelli Scorpion MX32 tyres
  • US version with its own suspension setup and triple clamps with 20 instead of 22 mm offset
  • The Desmo450 MX Factory MY27 will not be sold in North America

One year after launching its first motocross bike, Ducati is following up. The Desmo450 MX and its Factory version are not getting a new generation for 2027, but a series of targeted changes. As the manufacturer announced on 8 October 2026, the ideas behind them come from the first racing season. At Ducati, race bikes and production bikes are meant to evolve in parallel. According to Ducati, the updates aim at more performance on track, better ergonomics and greater durability. On top of that come new liveries and a special path for North America.

What changes on the Ducati Desmo450 MX 2027?

The Desmo450 MX 2027 gets shorter final gearing, a larger fuel filler opening, reshaped foot levers and new tyres. It also receives reinforced components, a predictive maintenance system and a new livery.

The most important change for the riding feel concerns the drivetrain. The rear wheel now carries a 51-tooth sprocket. In the previous data sheet, Ducati lists a 49-tooth sprocket. More teeth on the rear sprocket mean shorter gearing. According to the manufacturer, this puts more torque to the rear wheel. It is meant to make the Desmo450 MX respond more eagerly when accelerating out of corners.

There are also changes for everyday use at the track. The fuel filler opening grows to 40 mm in diameter. This is meant to make refuelling quicker and easier. The gear lever and rear brake lever have redesigned contact surfaces. They are intended to make it easier to move the feet when shifting and braking.

The tyres are also new. Ducati fits Pirelli Scorpion MX32 in the Mid-Soft compound, 80/100-21 at the front and 110/90-19 at the rear. The manufacturer expects them to deliver plenty of traction on modern motocross tracks.

Which components has Ducati reinforced for more durability?

For model year 2027, Ducati has mainly revised parts in the engine, on the exhaust system and at heavily loaded points of the chassis. The aim is to increase robustness, reliability and service life.

In the engine, there are new tolerances on the starter drive gearing. The water pump seal has a modified shape and a Teflon coating. The exhaust header is reinforced where it connects to the silencer.

Ducati has also modified several parts that take impacts and high loads off-road. These include the chain guide bracket, the fork protectors and the front engine mounts on the frame. This list shows where improvements were needed in racing.

How does predictive maintenance work on the Desmo450 MX?

The system evaluates the bike’s usage data and adapts the engine maintenance intervals to the actual load. On the Desmo450 MX, it runs via the WiFi module, which is available as an accessory.

The idea itself is not entirely new. Ducati had already presented the system in spring 2026. From model year 2027, it is now a fixed part of the model range. Instead of rigid schedules, maintenance can be planned more precisely. Riders who ride a lot and hard will have to visit the workshop sooner. Those who treat the bike more gently can wait longer.

For comparison, Ducati lists fixed reference values in the data sheet. Oil and oil filter are due every 15 operating hours. Piston replacement and valve clearance checks are due every 45 to 60 hours, and engine maintenance every 90 to 120 hours.

Desmo450 MX technology at a glance

The heart of the bike remains the Desmo450 single-cylinder with 449.6 cc. It produces 63.5 hp (46.7 kW) at 9,400 rpm and delivers 53.5 Nm (39.5 lb-ft) at 7,500 rpm. The rev limiter only kicks in at 11,900 rpm. Its special feature is the desmodromic valve actuation. With this system, the valves are closed mechanically rather than by springs. Ducati also uses this principle in its road and race bikes. According to the manufacturer, the Desmo450 MX is the only motocross model with this technology.

The engine sits in an aluminium perimeter frame. It consists of just 11 parts and needs only a few welds. This is meant to optimise stiffness and weight. According to the data sheet, the Desmo450 MX weighs 104.8 kg (231 lbs) ready to ride without fuel. The tank holds 7.2 litres.

For the suspension, Ducati relies on Showa. At the front is a fully adjustable 49 mm upside-down fork with 310 mm of travel and Kashima coating. At the rear, a fully adjustable shock is mounted to a cast aluminium swingarm, with 301 mm of travel. Braking is handled by Brembo brakes and Galfer discs measuring 260 mm at the front and 240 mm at the rear. The wheels come from Takasago Excel with Alpina spokes in 21 and 19 inches.

The electronics are familiar too. There are two Power Modes and two Riding Modes, plus Ducati Traction Control, Power Launch, quickshifter and Engine Brake Control. According to Ducati, the traction control is the world’s first patented solution developed specifically for a motocross bike. It is designed to intervene precisely when the rear wheel spins too much.

Visually, the new model year can be recognised by its logos. They are now black instead of white on the Ducati Red bodywork.

What sets the Desmo450 MX Factory apart from the standard model?

The Desmo450 MX Factory is aimed at riders looking for a bike ready for racing straight away. It comes with more extensive equipment and is still lighter than the standard version.

The biggest difference is the complete titanium exhaust system from Akrapovič with its own mapping. It saves 1.7 kg (3.7 lbs) and is designed to improve power delivery and acceleration. According to the Ducati data sheet, the Factory weighs 104 kg (229 lbs) ready to ride without fuel, 0.8 kg less than the standard model.

The Showa suspension has also been upgraded. Fork and shock feature a Kashima Extra Dark coating and a TiO treatment with superfinish. These surfaces are meant to make the components work more smoothly and reduce wear. The triple clamps are machined from solid and save additional weight.

For racing, further parts are added:

  • Holeshot device for better starts
  • Engine guard and front brake disc cover
  • Gold RK MXU chain with O-rings
  • WiFi module as standard

Via the WiFi module and the X-Link app, the Riding Modes on the Factory can be freely configured. The rider can adjust throttle response, launch control, engine braking and traction control. Predictive maintenance also runs through it. The Factory also adopts all the updates of the standard model. Visually, it wears the new 2027 Ducati Corse livery with a red and black Ducati logo.

What changes on the Desmo450 MX for the USA?

The Desmo450 MX for the US market gets its own suspension setup for the first time. Ducati also fits different triple clamps there, with 20 instead of 22 mm offset.

The offset describes the distance between the steering axis and the fork tubes. Even a few millimetres change the geometry of the front end. Ducati does not give a reason for the US setup.

North America takes a different route with the Factory version. The model year 2027 Desmo450 MX Factory will not be offered there. Instead, Ducati will sell only the limited-edition Factory model from model year 2026 in North America.

What role does racing play for the Desmo450 MX?

At Ducati, racing is the starting point for production development. According to the manufacturer, the changes for 2027 come directly from feedback gathered in the first racing season.

The Desmo450 MX will continue to be developed on the track in the future. To do so, Ducati has signed Romain Febvre. The Frenchman is the reigning MXGP world champion and will ride for the Red Bull Ducati Factory MXGP Team in 2027 and 2028. The team manager is Louis Vosters. Febvre won the MXGP world championship in 2015 and 2025, took 26 Grand Prix wins and stood on the podium 97 times.

The update of the Desmo450 MX is part of a larger off-road offensive from Borgo Panigale. For 2027, Ducati has also presented the Desmo250 MX, the Desmo450 EDS enduro and the Desmo450 SM supermoto.

When will the Desmo450 MX 2027 arrive and what will it cost?

The Desmo450 MX 2027 will arrive in both standard and Factory versions first at selected Ducati dealers in Europe. It is then set to become available in further markets worldwide.

Ducati has not announced a fixed date for the start of sales. The manufacturer has not separately announced prices for model year 2027 either. On the German Ducati website, the Desmo450 MX is currently listed from 12,490 euros (approx. 13,970 US dollars) and the Desmo450 MX Factory from 14,590 euros (approx. 16,320 US dollars). For the Desmo450 MX, there are an additional 345 euros (approx. 386 US dollars) in delivery charges. Whether these prices already apply to the new model year is not stated.

The Desmo450 MX is available in Ducati Red with black logos. The Factory wears the 2027 Ducati Corse livery. In Germany, only dealers with an off-road focus sell the motocross models. Ducati lists 13 locations for this.
