- Six crashes in four days: Martin leaves Barcelona without any points
- Aprilia confirms after examination at Dexeus Hospital: no fractures
- Championship gap to teammate Bezzecchi grows to 15 points
Jorge Martin and the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will not become friends in the 2026 MotoGP season. What began on Friday with a heavy impact in the first free practice session continued throughout the entire race weekend and reached its inglorious climax on Monday morning during the official post-season test. The Aprilia factory rider crashed in Turn 7, was taken by ambulance to the Medical Centre and subsequently transferred to the Dexeus University Hospital in Barcelona for further examination. It was his sixth crash within four days.

What happened at the Barcelona test on Monday?
Roughly ninety minutes after the start of the official MotoGP test, a red flag appeared on the timing screens at 11:27 a.m. local time. Martin had crashed heavily in the fast Turn 7. Photographers on site reported that the Spaniard was conscious and able to move his limbs. Nevertheless, the marshals fitted a precautionary neck brace before Martin was transported by ambulance to the circuit’s Medical Centre.
Aprilia team manager Paolo Bonora suggested to MotoGP.com that the front tire may not yet have been in its optimal temperature window. Martin had therefore lost the front at even a minimal lean angle. Initial examinations at the Medical Centre revealed no visible fractures, but the team decided to transfer Martin to the Dexeus University Hospital in Barcelona.
The all-clear followed in the afternoon at 2:45 p.m. local time. Martin himself took to social media and expressed his relief. He wrote that he was grateful to be uninjured and safe after a heavy crash, and praised the response time of the circuit doctors as impressive.
How did Martin’s crash-filled weekend in Barcelona unfold?
The Monday crash was merely the final chord of a devastating series. As early as Friday morning in FP1, Martin had gone down in Turn 12. The impact was so severe that the Spaniard suffered a mild concussion. Martin later admitted that in that moment, the fatal accident of Luis Salom at the same spot ten years earlier had crossed his mind.
Later the same day, another crash in practice cost Martin a direct Q2 spot. On Saturday, he managed to advance from Q1 but crashed a third time toward the end of the first qualifying segment. In the Sprint, he went down again while running in sixth place. That was four crashes in three days before the Grand Prix had even started.
In Sunday’s race, Martin initially survived two chaotic start phases. After the horror crash between Alex Marquez and Pedro Acosta, as well as the accident involving Johann Zarco, Pecco Bagnaia and Luca Marini during the second restart, the race was launched once more. On the third attempt, Martin surged into second place behind Acosta before Turn 1, with Raul Fernandez right behind him. In Turn 5, a collision with the Trackhouse rider sent both into the gravel. Martin crashed, while Fernandez was able to continue.

What does Raul Fernandez say about the collision with Martin?
The Trackhouse rider was talkative afterward, while Martin initially declined to comment on the incident. Fernandez described the sequence of events as follows: he had carried a lot of speed through Turn 4 and was ready to overtake Martin at Turn 5. Martin had braked slightly earlier there, which is why he saw an opportunity to attack. When he was almost past, Martin stood the bike up, saw him and then released the brake to lean back in. At that moment, the two collided.
Fernandez emphasized that he felt bad and was particularly sorry for Aprilia, saying they did not deserve this. However, he believed he had not made a mistake. He pointed out that a similar situation had occurred in the same corner on Saturday and that he had been braking hard there all weekend.
Fernandez had experienced a turbulent day himself that Sunday. During the horror crash of Alex Marquez, he was right in the middle as parts of the destroyed Gresini Ducati were flung across the track. He said he felt a heavy impact on his body that hit his finger and chest.
Who was absent from the Barcelona test and why?
The Monday test was the last official development day of the current 2026 season with the existing 1000cc machines and Michelin tires. Further tests at Brno and the Red Bull Ring will already focus on the new regulations for 2027, with Pirelli taking over as the new tire supplier.
After the crash-filled race weekend, the field had shrunk to 19 riders. Alex Marquez was absent following his horror crash with Pedro Acosta. The Gresini rider had broken his right collarbone and additionally sustained a small vertebral fracture. The collarbone surgery was successful according to Gresini. Johann Zarco was also unable to participate after his accident during the restart. His leg had been trapped in Bagnaia’s Ducati, with examinations revealing knee injuries and a small crack in the ankle area.
Surprisingly, Sunday’s race winner Fabio Di Giannantonio also withdrew. The VR46 rider had been hit by a flying front wheel during the Marquez-Acosta collision but had nevertheless taken the restart and claimed victory. For the test, he and his team opted for recovery ahead of Mugello. Marc Marquez remained absent as well. The Ducati factory rider is recovering from his foot and shoulder surgery following the Le Mans Sprint.
Ducati was thus represented by only three regular riders: Bagnaia, Morbidelli and rookie Aldeguer. Honda had to manage without Zarco’s experience and fielded Marini, Mir and LCR rookie Diogo Moreira.

Who was fastest at the test?
Pedro Acosta set the fastest time of the day with 1:38.767 minutes. Fabio Quartararo followed just 0.064 seconds behind in second place. Enea Bastianini, Maverick Vinales and Raul Fernandez rounded out the top five. The first Ducati was Aldeguer in seventh, with the top ten separated by just 0.552 seconds overall. In the afternoon, onset of rain combined with strengthening winds prevented any continuation of the test work. None of the manufacturers went back on track after the lunch break, meaning the morning classification also served as the final result.
The busiest rider of the day was MotoGP rookie Toprak Razgatlioglu, who completed 45 laps on his Pramac Yamaha.
What does the weekend mean for Martin’s championship chances?
With six crashes and zero points from both Sprint and Grand Prix, Martin heads home from Barcelona with a sobering record. In the championship standings, he now sits 15 points behind teammate and championship leader Marco Bezzecchi in second place. Just one week earlier in Le Mans, he had won both the Sprint and the main race for Aprilia.
The previous year had already been marked by injury problems for Martin. He contested only seven race weekends in 2025 and missed the first pre-season winter test due to surgery on pre-existing injuries in December. The two weeks until the Italian GP at Mugello, where Aprilia will contest their home Grand Prix, should now serve for physical and mental recovery.
