Segway Xaber 300: The Dirtbike Aiming to Shake Up the Electric Off-Road Market

Segway is launching the Xaber 300, an electric off-road motorcycle that clearly sets itself apart from the brand’s previous scooters and e-bikes. Starting May 15, 2026, the e-dirtbike will be available through authorized dealers in the United States.
  • 21 kW peak power (approximately 28.6 hp / 21 kW), 600 Nm maximum torque, 96 km/h top speed
  • 85 kg weight, power-to-weight ratio of 0.25 kW/kg
  • 72V battery with over 3 kWh capacity, up to 100 km range in the most economical mode
  • Price: $5,299.99 (approximately 4,530 euros)

Most people still associate the name Segway with self-balancing personal transporters or the company’s now widespread e-scooters. However, since the acquisition by Ninebot in 2015, the brand has continuously expanded its portfolio. E-bikes, power stations, go-karts, and initial off-road models in the Sur-Ron style were already part of the lineup. With the Xaber 300 (pronounced “Say-br”), Segway is now taking a significant step further, positioning itself for the first time clearly in the segment of high-performance electric off-road motorcycles.

What’s Inside the Segway Xaber 300?

The Xaber 300 is not a souped-up e-bike with knobby tires but a full-fledged electric dirtbike designed exclusively for off-road use. First presented at CES 2026 in January, Segway only released the complete technical specifications in early May 2026.

The drivetrain features a purpose-built mid-drive motor with flat-wire technology. According to Segway, this construction improves the so-called slot fill rate, which is said to result in higher power density, better heat dissipation, and increased efficiency. The motor is controlled by the equally proprietary X720 Titan Controller, which the manufacturer claims ensures delay-free throttle response. Peak power is rated at 21 kW (approximately 28.6 hp / 21 kW), with maximum torque specified at 600 Nm. At a weight of just 85 kg (187 lbs), this yields a power-to-weight ratio of 0.25 kW/kg, which Segway describes as the best-in-class ratio in this price segment.

In practice, this should translate to a top speed of 96 km/h (60 mph) and acceleration from 0 to 80 km/h (50 mph) in 5.5 seconds. This puts the Xaber 300 significantly above the performance level of typical e-bikes and into the territory of light electric motorcycles.

How Far Can the Xaber 300 Go on a Single Charge?

Range depends heavily on the selected riding mode and terrain. Segway quotes up to 100 km (62 miles) in the most economical 150 mode. More detailed figures for the individual modes are also provided: in 150 mode at approximately 69 km/h (43 mph), around 71 km (44 miles) should be achievable; in 200 mode at 80 km/h (50 mph), approximately 60 km (37 miles); in 300 mode at 90 km/h (56 mph), roughly 55 km (34 miles); and in Beast mode at 96 km/h (59.6 mph), still approximately 50 km (31 miles).

Power comes from a 72V battery pack with 44 Ah and a capacity of over 3 kWh. It uses Samsung 50S lithium cells, which Segway describes as automotive-grade cells. The maximum discharge rate is 5C, which is intended to enable consistently high power output even during aggressive riding and reduce the power sag that occurs with some electric vehicles. Charging is handled by an 8A charger.

What Chassis and Frame Does the Xaber 300 Have?

The foundation is a forged frame made from 6000-series aluminum, manufactured under high pressure. Segway specifies a torsional rigidity of 1,621.4 Nm/degree, indicating a high degree of structural stiffness that should enable predictable handling in corners, during landings, and on rough terrain.

The frame is not an entirely new development from scratch. The design is based on insights gained from the X1000 prototype, with which Segway competed in the experimental low-emission class “Future Mission 1000” at the Dakar Rally in 2025 and 2026. The experience gathered in the desert sands of the Dakar is now intended to flow into series production.

For the suspension, Segway relies on Marzocchi components. Up front, an upside-down fork with 37 mm stanchions handles duties, while a rear shock with 85 mm stroke is connected via a centrally mounted multilink rear suspension system. Both components offer 220 mm of travel each and are fully adjustable in compression, rebound, and preload. Ground clearance is 267 mm (10.5 inches), with a wheelbase of 1,295 mm (50.98 inches).

Braking is handled by four-piston hydraulic brakes with 220 x 3 mm brake discs on both wheels. A 19-inch wheel is mounted at the front, a 17-inch wheel at the rear. The chain is 520 specification.

What Riding Modes Does the Xaber 300 Offer?

The Xaber 300’s mode concept is one of the more interesting aspects of the motorcycle. Three power levels simulate the power delivery characteristics of 150 cc, 200 cc, and 300 cc combustion engines, according to Segway. The idea behind it: beginners can start in 150 mode with reduced power and work their way up with growing experience without having to buy a new motorcycle. For maximum performance, there is also Beast mode.

Additionally, there is a Pro mode where the power curve can be individually customized. This is relevant insofar as the instantly available torque of an electric motor can feel very abrupt on loose surfaces depending on the setting. The ability to configure power delivery should make a noticeable difference, particularly in off-road use.

What About the Virtual E-Clutch?

Electric motors do not require a mechanical clutch by design. Nevertheless, Segway has equipped the Xaber 300 with a virtual electronic clutch designed to simulate the behavior of a mechanical clutch. The thinking behind it targets riders who come from gasoline-powered dirtbikes and are accustomed to using the clutch lever to manage traction, lift the front wheel, or more finely control power in technical sections.

Stark pursues a similar approach with the Varg. Whether the simulation is actually convincing enough to persuade experienced off-road riders remains to be seen in practice. Fundamentally, however, the approach makes sense: familiar controls can significantly lower the barrier to entry for riders switching from combustion dirtbikes.

What Electronics and Software Does the Xaber 300 Feature?

Segway leverages the brand’s electronics background to give the Xaber 300 an unusually comprehensive feature set. Standard equipment includes a selective traction control system (TCS) with various terrain settings that can also be completely deactivated, a hill-hold function, regenerative braking, a one-button reverse gear, and the ability to create multiple rider profiles. Everything is controlled via a 2.4-inch TFT color display with GPS, 4G connectivity, and IoT integration.

Additional features are planned via over-the-air updates. Among the announced features is a virtual wheelie coach that allows users to set a maximum wheelie angle through the companion app. Segway draws on the gyroscopic sensor technology the company developed for its self-balancing vehicles. Also planned is a rider control mode with speed limiting, location tracking, geo-fencing, and real-time monitoring through the app. These features could make the motorcycle interesting for families who want to introduce younger riders to off-road riding in a controlled manner. Segway emphasizes, however, that the Xaber 300 is intended only for riders aged 18 and above.

A headlight with low and high beam is also part of the standard equipment. The battery management system runs version BMS 6.0. The battery and display are IPX7 certified, while the overall vehicle achieves an IP67 protection rating. The battery also carries UL 2271 certification.

How Much Does the Segway Xaber 300 Cost and When Is It Available?

The Segway Xaber 300 goes on sale starting May 15, 2026, and will be distributed through authorized Segway dealers in the United States. The price is $5,299.99 (approximately 4,530 euros / $5,299.99). Two color options are available: Shred Velvet and Black Diamond.

“With Xaber 300, we set out to create an e-moto that punches well above its price tag in terms of uncompromising off-road performance. As the world leader in light electric vehicles, we had the technology, engineering and manufacturing experience and capability to do just that. This is a really special machine that raises the bar in its category.” Nick Howe, Head of E-Bike at Segway, describes the ambition the company has for its new off-road model.

According to Segway, the Xaber 300 is designed for riders between 165 cm (5’5″) and 185 cm (6’1″) tall. The maximum rider weight is specified at 150 kg (330 lbs). The warranty covers two years for the battery, motor, and frame, plus one year for the complete vehicle.

How Does the Xaber 300 Position Itself in the Market?

The Xaber 300 enters a growing segment that already has established competitors. Gear Patrol, for example, draws a comparison with the Surron Ultra Bee HP, which can boast a somewhat higher maximum range of 115 km (71.5 miles) but is approximately 3.6 kg (8 lbs) heavier and is said to achieve a slightly lower top speed. The price positioning below $5,300 is significantly below high-end electric dirtbikes like the Stark Varg, which is positioned in an entirely different performance and price class.

Segway brings a background that fundamentally differs from traditional motorcycle manufacturers. The company’s core competency lies in sensors, software, and control systems. Whether this translates into a superior off-road experience remains to be seen. However, the combination of racing experience at the Dakar Rally, a well-thought-out mode concept, and a comparatively affordable price positioning makes the Xaber 300 at least on paper an interesting newcomer in the electric off-road market. The growing range of options in this segment shows that manufacturers are increasingly willing to treat electric off-road motorcycles as a serious market segment.
