Johann Zarco Is Back: Aragón Comeback With a Penalty in His Luggage

Johann Zarco climbs back onto his Honda at the Grand Prix of Aragón, a good three months after his heavy crash in Barcelona. The return is only cleared, however, once he passes the medical check at the circuit on the Thursday before the race weekend.
  • Return at the Grand Prix of Aragón from 28 to 30 August, subject to the medical check on Thursday
  • 96 days out of racing so far, and more than 100 days by the time of first practice on Friday
  • In his first race back, Zarco has to serve a double long lap penalty

On Thursday lunchtime, Castrol Honda LCR sent out the announcement many in the paddock had been waiting weeks for: Johann Zarco is riding again. Lucio Cecchinello’s team confirmed that the Frenchman will return at the Grand Prix of Aragón. That makes the comeback considerably earlier than planned back in July, when September was the target, specifically the weekend at Misano.

When does Johann Zarco return to MotoGP?

Zarco climbs back onto the Honda RC213V at MotorLand Aragón over the weekend of 28 to 30 August. It would be his first race outing since the Grand Prix of Catalunya in mid May. First free practice is scheduled for Friday, 28 August. By then, more than 100 days will have passed between the crash and his return to the track.

What does the Thursday medical check decide?

The check decides whether Zarco is allowed to ride at all. Clearance from his own medical team is already in place, but that is not enough on its own. Before any comeback from a serious injury, a rider also has to pass the mandatory examination at the circuit. Responsible for it is Dr Angel Charte, MotoGP’s medical director. If Zarco passes the examination on Thursday, he can go out on track from Friday.

Why is the comeback earlier than planned?

Because recovery has progressed faster than expected in recent weeks. According to the team statement, Zarco increased his workload step by step. His build-up programme included cycling, laps on a supermoto in Andorra and, most recently, rides on a Honda CBR1000RR. The production sportbike mattered in particular because it allows longer stints in one go and shows how the knee responds under sustained load. Zarco says he feels fit enough for the MotoGP machine again: “I feel good enough to jump back on the MotoGP bike.” Team boss Lucio Cecchinello frames the return cautiously and says the team will take it step by step.

How long was Zarco injured and which races did he miss?

Zarco missed six Grands Prix in a row. He was injured on 17 May at the Grand Prix of Catalunya in Barcelona. After a first red flag, he crashed at the second start in the very first corner, an incident that also involved Luca Marini and Francesco Bagnaia. His left leg ended up near the rear wheel of Bagnaia’s Ducati. The result was a serious ligament injury in the left knee and deep burns in the same area. Initially there was talk of damage to both cruciate ligaments and the medial meniscus, along with an ankle injury.

Surgery on the ligaments was planned at first, but could not be carried out because of the burns. The doctors around Dr Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet in Lyon therefore switched the treatment to a conservative route, meaning rehabilitation instead of an operation. During that period Zarco sat out the races in Italy, Hungary, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and Germany, as well as Silverstone after the summer break.

Which penalty does Zarco have to serve on his comeback?

A double long lap penalty is waiting in his first race back. The stewards had judged Zarco to be the cause of the Barcelona incident, even though he was the one most seriously hurt. In a long lap penalty, a rider has to take an extended loop alongside the actual track and loses time in the process. Twice in succession costs a noticeable number of positions in a race. Expectations are muted anyway on the sporting side: after the long lay-off, Zarco has dropped to 17th in the championship standings, while Jorge Martin leads the season out front.

What does the return mean for Cal Crutchlow?

For Cal Crutchlow it brings an end to his sixth and, for now, final outing as a stand-in. The Briton had already ended his active career in 2020 and filled in at all six race weekends Zarco missed. He did not score any championship points, coming closest in Hungary and the Netherlands with 16th place on both occasions. He is not out of the picture entirely, though: Crutchlow is set to travel to Aragón in case the medical check goes wrong against expectations. He also remains available as cover for the rest of the season, with ten Grands Prix still to run.

The grid is complete again for the first time in months

With Zarco’s return, all regular riders are back on track in Aragón. At the same time, Fermin Aldeguer returns to Gresini Ducati after a healed vertebral injury. The 2026 season has been marked by a striking number of injuries and stand-in appearances so far, among others at Aprilia and in the Honda camp. Aragón therefore becomes the first weekend in months where the competitive order can be judged with a full field.

What happens next for Zarco at LCR?

His seat for next season is already secured. Zarco stays with Lucio Cecchinello’s team. What remains open is who lines up alongside him in 2027. Honda has not yet decided whether current LCR rider Diogo Moreira or new signing David Alonso moves up to the factory team to join Fabio Quartararo. That decision coincides with the start of the new 850 era, in which the premier class engines get smaller.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When is the Zarco comeback in MotoGP?

The comeback is set for the Grand Prix of Aragón from 28 to 30 August 2026. Whether Zarco is actually allowed to ride is only decided after the medical check at the circuit on Thursday.

  • How long was Johann Zarco injured?

By 20 August it had been 96 days since the crash on 17 May. By first free practice on 28 August it would be more than 100 days without a race outing.

  • Why did Zarco not need knee surgery?

The burns on his left leg made an operation on the ligaments impossible. His doctors therefore switched to a treatment without surgery, which worked out well in the end.

  • Which penalty is waiting for Zarco in his first race?

He has to serve a double long lap penalty. The stewards had judged him to be the cause of the crash at the Grand Prix of Catalunya, and the penalty applies to his first race after returning.
