Benelli 902S: The new competitor for the Ducati Monster

Benelli recently presented the new 902S at the Beijing Motor Show, a naked bike that impresses with its design and performance.  The 902S is strongly reminiscent of the Ducati Monster, not only visually, but also in terms of performance and equipment.

Design and construction

The Benelli 902S has a sporty, Italian-inspired design with an exposed trellis frame and a striking, muscular fuel tank.  The lines and overall look of the motorcycle are strongly reminiscent of the smaller 752S, also a naked bike from Benelli, which is clearly inspired by the Ducati Monster.

Engine and performance

At the heart of the 902S is a 904cc, liquid-cooled parallel twin engine with fuel injection, which produces an impressive 105 hp (104 hp or 77 kW).  This increase in power is clearly noticeable compared to the 75 hp (74 hp or 55 kW) of the 752S.  Maximum torque is expected to be at a similar level, making the bike very attractive for performance-oriented riders.

Chassis and weight

Benelli has not skimped on the chassis components either and has opted for high-quality components.  The 902S is equipped with a Brembo brake system consisting of monobloc four-piston brake callipers and adjustable Marzocchi suspension.  The total weight of the 902S is 220 kg (485 lbs), which is a reduction of 6 kg (13 lbs) compared to the 752S.  This weight reduction should further improve the acceleration and braking performance of the motorcycle.

Technical data at a glance

  • Engine: 904cc, liquid-cooled parallel twin
  • Power: 105 hp (104 hp or 77 kW)
  • Torque: not yet specified
  • Weight: 220 kg (485 lbs)
  • Brake system: Brembo monobloc four-piston brake calipers
  • Suspension: Marzocchi, fully adjustable
  • Wheelbase: 1,460 mm
  • Seat height: expected to be 810 mm

Price and availability

Although the price of the Benelli 902S has not yet been officially announced, it is expected to be in a similar price range to the 752S, which costs around 8,242 USD (approx. 7,600 EUR or 7,200 GBP).  However, given the performance-oriented features, the price of the 902S could be slightly higher, estimated at around 12,000 USD.

Conclusion

With the 902S, Benelli shows that it can be a serious competitor to established brands such as Ducati in the high-performance naked bike segment.  The mixture of high performance, advanced technology and attractive pricing makes the 902S an interesting proposition for motorcycle fans worldwide.  Whether and when the 902S will come to the European market remains to be seen, but the demand for stylish and powerful naked bikes could soon make this a reality.
